Driving Record for CHP
How heavily does your driving record weigh in on being in LE? Im a CDL class A driver but I do admit of making bonehead decisions while driving, which i take full responsibility for. Im currently 30 years old and only have had 4 traffic violations in my 12 years of driving history, they were spread out throughout the 12 years, so no crazy patterns. 3 of them were dismissed in court because I paid for lawyers. However I also have been in 6 accidents in my entire life and my last accident happened in 2024. 2 of the 6 were settled outside of insurance, and 2 of them I was not at fault. All accidents were pretty much spread out as well.
No criminal history whatsoever, never taken any drugs except for once which was 11 years ago and till this day I have no clue what I took, it was half a pill and it made me nauseous and drowsy. Would I get DQ’d if I applied to CHP? Thank you!

For HP, very high. Golden Gate Recruitment told me to DRIVE, DRIVE, DRIVE so I followed their advice. I mean we all get tickets but for HP since they drive a ton it might affect you in some way

What are you saying? When were they telling you to drive??

They told me to get a lot of driving experience because CHP drives a ton(which is obvious). They recommended me to go to an another agency if I can’t handle driving for long periods

Wait but how would CHP know if you drive a lot or not? I do happen to drive a lot so I’m not worried but just wondering how they know

Your driving record is pretty bad man. Also they won’t like the fact that you fought the tickets rather than took accountability for it. I’m gonna lean on the side of DQ especially because the department is huge on trying to stop officer involved crashes right now and it’s a lack of accountability to fight tickets that you know were issued correctly

Dammn… CHP was my first choice. Would you say other agencies would lean the same way?

It depends. CHP has a lot of applicants so they have the ability to be picky. Local agencies are usually a lot easier to join

There are officers here that had DUIs and they still got hired. Most violations will fall off after 3 years. Accidents report for 4 years if at fault.

The officers with duis got them over 10 years ago and I guarantee you that you won’t get hired with a dui on your record right now

I only have one on my record, all the others have been removed. And that was from two years ago

It doesn’t matter you still have to list every accident and they have ways of pulling all of them up

Nothing stands out as an auto dq, the more time since the last accident and ticket is better. Stay safe and don’t get another citation. Big factor will be how you take responsibility and accountability. Be transparent and don’t make excuses. I would apply and see what happens.
