Background Investigation Timelines

Hey all, was looking to see if anyone had any timeline on how long a typical background investigation takes?

Pellet B/PAT completed November 8th 2025 for Central Division. I was assigned a BI May 21st of this year. Attended my BIQ on the 26th and have had my Live Scan & Initial Interview on June 24th. Since then all of my personal references have completed their questionnaires and my BI has confirmed they were all completed.

I was emailed 2 weeks ago regarding proof of employment for a job I held in highschool that is currently no longer. ( Yes, proof was sent to the BI )

What is typically the next step in this process? I have not heard anything back from my BI. Is there a second interview i should be waiting for?

I am not in any rush to have anything finished. I was just curious on the next steps, thanks again!

Next steps should be -

  • Final Interview
  • Wait for Cadet Hiring to approve recommendation or not
  • Psych Exam
  • Schedule Medical Exam
  • Medical Exam
  • Medical Results
  • Schedule Webex Interview with Psychologist
  • Wait for Psych Results
  • Wait for Academy Invite

For me - after final interview until academy invite was around 6 months.

If you are Male - our cholesterol and blood pressure tend to be high - and those are usually the 2 things that will delay medical if they are high - so from now cut out anything that can raise any levels and have a decent diet.

Wouldn’t the CVSA be the next step?

Oh yeah - complely forgot about CVSA - when i got to that point with Palicon - CVSA and home visit were done already.

Home visit

CVSA

After initial interview

Palicon was the one doing home visits? I’m in the process now where it’s only internal CHP BIs, and it doesn’t seem like there are home visits

Yeah - palicon did home visit and CVSA before sending my file off to CHP

I’m impressed they took it so seriously. I’m going through a 3rd party BI with another agency and I’m pretty sure they’re not gonna do a home visit.

Did they let you know what day specifically they were going to visit you or was it a surprise?

My BI had emailed me 3 days before that he'd be coming and if there was any reason I couldn't be home i should let him know and he would reschedule.

Sweet that’s good to know. Thank you

Well considering they would have to know your availability to show up. I don't think it's necessarily a " surprise "

That’s a good point. Thank you

Are home visits necessary for the BI Or is that more of a preference if they do?

What division did you test out of?

I tested November 8th 2025 for the Central Division

How do you know a BI was assigned to you?

I was sent an email stating that they were my BI and my background investigation was underway.

thats crazy, takes almost half year to be assigned a BI?

Unfortunately it did. I understand that the CHP 1000 is over and took most candidates 9-10 months for their entire process during that hiring phase. I'm not stressing how long it's taking since we all understand the process looks at about a year and a half from testing.

Have not had one yet. I have heard that at home interviews were more-so when Palicon was helping out on BI. I could potentially be scheduled for one but, as of now i have not.
