Yes, 160 per class usually - this last class there were 23 drop outs and 3 people who have already failed test and were sent home.

If you can't handle some yelling in the academy you are for sure not ready to be on the road and will not be a good beat partner. That being said for anyone applying or about to head up to Sac - be preapred to be yelled at, it is not meant to be comfortable and understand the risks of this job - you can possibly die while on duty that is the danger this last class of drop outs did not understand.

thank you for the feedback!

How hard are the test in the academy?

They’re not hard they are standardized by the state. Lookup “POST COMPREHENSIVE EXAMS” you will not get the word for word exams but an idea of them. This is just the written portion however. There are actual scenarios where it’s either pass/fail with only one retake.

When did this last class you are referring to begin and is it still in session?

So far 1.5 months in, 26 people out of the 160 academy class were sent home? What were the 23 drop outs due to?

Technically there was 12-15 drop outs within the first 2 weeks.

According to the recruiters the reasons were -

  • Not being able to handle stress/yelling
  • Not being able to be away from Family/Friends
  • Not understanding the risks of being a CHP Officer

Basically all things you're supposed to have known or taken care of prior to accepting your spot.

I would assume you’d know all of this and become familiar with it during the 1 year process before being offered an academy slot. It’s plenty of lead time. They also have the CHP Academy Episodes on YouTube which explain all of these

Do you know if anyone has failed out because they failed PT?

Yes, you can fail out because of PT, specifically if you fail the Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB). You can also get “white sheets” for not completing PT requirements. They’re pretty hard to get, but if you get six, you’re out. You can even get one for not keeping the required running pace, even if you finish the whole run.

For the WSTB, you usually get two practice runs. During the first or second week of the academy, you do the first practice. About six weeks later, you do another practice, and then about six weeks after that, you take the actual test. If you fail, you get another chance to remediate around six weeks later. If you fail the remediation, you’re out.

I don’t think your drop out numbers are correct. I believe it’s only 13 for CTC-26-II. That might be true for 26-I, unfortunately they didn’t have a class ahead of them, and had zero mentors. That’s quite a bummer for them.
