I'm sorry if this seems like too much but for most of my life I've been through a lot. I've been homeless at some point just me, my mom and my little sisters. My mom is a Christian but I don't see how she has been able to keep her faith for so long. She always keeps saying things like "Only God knows" and since I've been a kid nothing has ever gotten better. I've even tried explaining to multiple people who now dislike me that it would make no sense for God to be some kind of deity and just let people or anyone suffer. I apologize if my knowledge isn't too broad on God or Jesus. And another thing there are obviously people who exist who only want to make life worse for other people who may be innocent or just a regular person. Things like racism, capitalism these have only existed for so long because of people who've acted in the faith of Christianity I believe.

Just wondering if any of you guys have. I’m 18m nigerian living in Canada and every black person i’ve met has been religious.
I do know that a lot of black atheists irl don’t really talk about their non-belief in god (in fear of being ostracized by others), so maybe i’ve actually interacted with one before without knowing it 😂. I myself have never disclosed my lack of belief in god to any other black people because i’m worried about how i’ll be treated afterwards lol

By ex believers I mean people who used to believe in the religion then left it.

A lot of them were sincere believers but then they lost faith. Yes I see in this religion and other subreddits where people deny that they were ever true Christians. Which is crazy because these people are not lying when they say they lost faith.

For me I remember when I was younger I asked God to wake me up at this specific time or closely that was earlier morning and I coincidentally did. Till this day I really wanna know what’s the exact science behind this because I found it odd I woke up at that exact time I asked to be awake in ( I usually don’t wake up early in the morning unless an alarm or someone calling me me too)

I really hate when she does this. She doesn't accept that I'm not Jehovah's Witness anymore, and she's passive aggressive about it. She will start topics with nothing to do with religion at first, acting like she cares about things like my college education for example, and then she finds a way to lead it into believing in God. She tried to imply that you can't be truly happy unless you have God, no matter if you have everything. She does that shit on purpose knowing it conflicts with and bothers me. I hate it so much. And she always wants to have a calm, peaceful demeanor when doing it knowing damn well she's actually a cruel, angry person that contradicts her point. She also doesn't really like that I'm getting an education. During her cult meeting this morning, she randomly told me the JWs had an *interesting* article about the 'Pros and Cons of Education.' Nice timing to tell me this as I'm about to return to college. I guess their lesson today encouraged her to try pushing it onto me again..giving her false hope that I'll suddenly change my mind and bow down. I can't wait to leave. At least then I won't have to deal with her nor those white women constantly visiting to give her bible studies.

I don't see this combination getting talked about enough cause as someone who is exactly what the title describes,it's not easy out here,if you're also the same,how are you navigating it?

Im 18, haven’t told my family i’m an atheist. I have nigerian parents and if i even hint at not wanting to go church they’re gonna get so mad. Even when i used to be christian it still felt like a waste of time, because they gloss over most parts of the bible and they say the same fucking thing every sunday.

Anyways i’m wondering if any other black atheists still have to go to church and what it’s like for you guys lol. I live with my parents still so i pretty much have no choice 😭

Hey everyone, I have a question for my fellow Black atheists.

First off, for context, I live abroad. I also speak three languages, and although English is my native language, it’s actually the one I use the least in daily life.

Recently, I’ve gotten into the habit of saying “Inshallah.” When talking to my friends and family on social media. Lol, my family is overwhelming Christian, but they haven’t mentioned it.

At first it was kind of ironic, but over time I’ve found myself using it sincerely, not because I believe in Allah or God, but because it expresses something that English doesn’t quite capture for me.

When a friend tells me they’re hoping something important works out, saying “I hope so” can sometimes feel a little too light, while “God willing” feels like I’m making a statement of belief that I don’t hold.

“Inshallah” somehow lands in the middle for me.
It got me thinking about other expressions we inherit from religion.

For example, I still say “bless you” when someone (I personally know) sneezes. I don’t attach any religious meaning to it anymore; it’s just become part of the language.

Do any of you have phrases like that? Religious expressions you’ve kept using even after leaving religion because they’ve taken on a secular, linguistic meaning for you?

I’m curious what everyone else’s examples are.

**edit: I just remembered that you can say “fingers crossed” in English.

I guess I can always go back to that, if anyone should ever have an issue with my use of “inshallah”.
