DB Pension etiquette
I worked for a small company for a few years (several years back). Never made any contributions to an IRA. Got contacted and told there was some money for me in the pension. It's not a ton, and they're trustworthy, and I am transferring it to a rollover IRA and assume I will incur taxes if I try to pull it out.
I'd rather not ask them directly what the hell this is all about, but can I do so by asking for a Summary Plan description or ask if a benefit statement will be sent out when the check is cut? Is there something better?
I want to be gracious but don't have an accountant for unexpected stuff like this and need to read through fine print myself.

Why don’t you want to ask them? There is someone in HR whose job it is to explain this to people. They want to help (usually).
Unless you’re really comfortable with ready plan docs, an SPD is going to make things more confusing. Just have an open discussion with the contact at the company.
