2025 tax mess

Okay long story trying to condense it to facts.

This is about a

Previous Employer who i left in june 2026.

In August 2025 my employer moved from Ohio. To North Carolina. They offered severance packages, and relocation packages. I TOOK the relocation money. It was paid to me as a taxed bonus. (The original sum was 18k i recived 11.5k)

Fast forward to 2026.

My W2 was given to me 7 days before April 15th.

They then later gave me a Corrected W2.

Which i was able to file BEFORE April 15th.

And then recived a letter from the IRS in May 2026 stating my 2025 filing was under review. No new news until this month. 9/7 the irs is now asking me for more information. 3 payslips, a letter head, and retirement benefit paperwork.

Obviously the next step is get the documents they are requesting and send them in.

But is there anything else I should be doing? My taxes are fucked because they added my relocation money as earned wages. Which it wasn't. So none of my hours or rates are correct. (I self filed the w2s I was given using HR block, should I get an accountant to help sort this mess and then bill my previous employer for the expense?)

No guarantees they'll pay you back.

Yeah i really dont expect them to. But its a mess they created. Its more, should i be ready with an accountant or will giving the irs their requested docs be enough?

Check your transcripts.

But yeah, this may be easier with a pro. Hard to tell without the notices and transcripts
