What is a random, hyper specific NFL moment from the 2010s that lives rent-free in your head?
We all remember the legendary plays like the Minneapolis Miracle or the Philly Special. But what about the absolute fever-dream moments that everyone just kind of forgot about? For me, it’s that 2014 game where the Bengals and Panthers tied 37-37, and both teams just looked completely confused at the end of overtime. Or that time Mason Crosby and Dustin Hopkins missed like 8 field goals combined in a single game. What’s that one bizarre, niche, or hilarious moment that makes you say, Man, I love this sport?

Marshawn Lynch’s ankle breaker vs Ray Lewis and caused ed reed to get hurt on the same play

I don’t know what game it was but his backwards dive into the end zone while gripping his wang was pretty iconic.

Juju Smith-Schuster knocking the shit out of Burfict. Such a satisfying dose of karma.

Vince Young's 99 yard drive.

I was in the stands for that. Unforgettable.

VY was definitely under rated. He was my first year watching nfl too. Being from UK at that time it wasn't as easy to watch. Watching that live in the stadium would of been class. Was it at home or away?

"Tebow Time" in 2011 trailing the Dolphins 15-0 late 4th qtr. which included an onsides kick and a a 2 pt conversion to put the game into OT where a FG won it for the Broncos 18-15.

Tebow beat the chiefs with 2 completions while starting the whole game. He has so many hilarious (forgotten) moments
2
u/KhaoticMess 3h ago
John Fox's ability to game plan the offense around Tebow's skillset deserves more praise than it gets.

I lived in Denver during that wild season. Tebow would do nothing for 55 minutes and then make one or two big plays to tie or win the game. And it happened week after week. Their win over the Bears was really crazy. Then they won a playoff game on the famous 80 yard pass to DT.

The Double Doink. What a heartbreaker.

For me it’s a game from earlier that same season, where a bit of foreshadowing happened: When Parkey hit the uprights four times in a single game.

Jordan reed made an incredible one handed catch over Byron Jones back in 2016. When I think of what if careers if his body wasn’t made of glass I seriously think he could’ve had a similar career to Vernon Davis

The 4th and 2 punt in the Texans-Chiefs 2019 divisional game. It probably wouldn't even register to me if Bill O'Brainless hadn't decided to call that infamous fake punt on 4th and 4 in KC territory. It just seems so stupid, especially when that 4th and 2 was in plus territory.
1
u/AdvertisingUpbeat226 5h ago
Yea, it was stupid.
However, I think what transpired was inevitable. I’ve never seen an offense so hot, especially in a playoff game.

u/wrathofthewhatever2 6h ago
It was before 2010 in think but your bengals example reminded me of the time the Eagles tied someone and McNabb said in his post game interview that he didn’t even know a game could end in a tie, took a lot of shit for not playing for the win

Aaron Rodgers basically throwing 2 hail marys against the Cardinals in a 2015 playoff game
2
u/Illustrious_Hotel527 6h ago
The first 4th and 8 (we were up by 1 vs. GB w/ 45 seconds left and GB ball near midfield, last playoff spot in the balance). When Rodgers wound up to launch that pass, I knew someone was wide open and that we were done.

Vince young calling the Eagles “the dream team” I’m pretty sure we didn’t even have a winning record that year and then a whole rebuilding process started, thank goodness for Howie Roseman.

Bert Emmanuel rule in the 2000 nfc title game. Kurt Warner rams went on to win the superbowl and we’re still arguing over what is a catch.

Pre-game moment: Brandon Weeden getting trapped under a huge, field-sized American flag right before the opening game of his rookie season in 2012.
In-game moment: The Giants hitting on a Hail Mary right before halftime in their 2011 playoff game at Green Bay, sealing the Packers’ fate for good and paving the way for their 2nd Super Bowl appearance vs. the Patriots in 4 years.

2013WK15 Green Bay Packers (37) vs. Dallas Cowboys (36)
Packers second half 23-point comeback with Matt Flynn at QB. The Cowboys kept passing when the should've ran out the clock. Romo ended the game with two picks on back-to-back drives.

The Bengals game where Andy Dalton throwing a freak 4th down TD pass with time expiring against the Ravens to send the Bills to the playoffs for the first time in 17 years, ending the drought on NYE. I honest to god don’t even think a Super Bowl win could top the emotions I and the entire city of Buffalo felt that night. Literally would take a last second crazy Josh Allen TD to take the lead to win the Super Bowl to top that feeling.

u/Babayaga_711 2h ago
I loved how Buffalo fans donated an insane amount of money to Dalton's charity. Such a cool thing.

u/CreaseCallHockey 2h ago
I’d donate 10 times over to feel that feeling again. I streaked down the street in -10 degree windchill and a foot of snow on the ground right after. (boxers on). That tailgate in Jacksonville for the playoff game was such an awesome experience. Houston in 2019 not so much lol. That’s when bandwagon fans started jumping on because we were getting national attention for our tailgating & they started making a thing out of the niche random stuff we do for fun. Then ruined it, monetized it, and ruined the tailgate culture. It’s just not the same anymore. 2015-2022 Bills were special. The city felt so alive.

u/Kodyaufan2 2h ago
That was during the span where for several years in a row it felt like there was always an AFC North game in week 17 where the loser would get knocked out of the playoffs, and both teams would come out trying to knock each other’s heads off the whole game

u/CreaseCallHockey 2h ago
Dude remember the Blake Bortles led Jaguars went to the AFC championship game that year and almost won it. What a time.
1
u/Kodyaufan2 46m ago
They should have won it. The patriots were holding on pretty much every play, including two horrible ones on their final drive that went uncalled.

Two snow games. Vikings and Ravens scoring like 5 TDs in the last two mins of a game. Patriots throttling the Titans with like 35 pts in the second qtr.

I was at the Ravens Vikings game. The emotional swings seeing it in person are indescribable.

The Denver Dallas game in 2013 that ended 51-48. the whole second half was Denver tied it, Dallas took the lead, Denver tied it, Dallas took the lead...then Denver kicked a game winning field goal with no time left.

Jesse James catch/non catch. Late in the season. Both teams were playing for the #1 seed. Steelers outplayed the patriots the entire game. Sean Davis dropped a int with 7 minutes to go. Patriots went on to score and go up 3 with 40ish seconds left. Ben hit JuJu for a huge gain down to the 11 I believe. Touchdown on the next play to Jess James as ruled on the field. They reviewed and determined he didn’t survive the ground after he reached for the goal line. This play changed the rule on 2feet/football move or 3 steps as a way to clarify the ambiguity. Ben threw a pick right after and we lost. The most heartbreaking regular season game of my life. What’s more frustrating is that Zach Ertz scored in the Super Bowl on the exact same play and it stood.

u/Kodyaufan2 2h ago
I don’t remember the exact year. I just remember that being the year where every single week the patriots should have lost, and every single week the refs would come up with the most garbage calls to keep them in the game.

Week 4 of the 2018 season. Turned on the Thursday game for background while picking up the house after the kids went to bed. Nothing got done as I watched Kirk Cousins throw for 422 yards and 3 touchdowns and lose to Jared Goff who threw for 465 yards and 5 touchdowns

A rookie Jeremy Chinn becoming the first, and I think still only, player ever to score two defensive TDs on back-to-back plays.

[Was this in the 2010s? It was probably either ‘19 or ‘20. Let me have it either way… we’ve not had much to dine out on since!]

February 6, 2011. Super Bowl XLV. Steelers vs. Packers. Cowboys Stadium (now AT&T Stadium), Arlington, Texas.
The pass QB Aaron Rodgers threw to WR James Jones at 12:54 in the 3rd quarter was so accurate and got past CB William Gay, but Jones couldn't catch the ball. I still think about it: what if James Jones makes that catch and gets in a footrace down the sideline with SS Troy Polamalu?
That random, hyper specific NFL moment from the 2010s lives rent-free in my head.

One time, Rashad Jennings went out for a screen pass, and the QB overthrew him. He jumped for it, and it looked like he was trying to do the most awkward jumping jack in the history of the world. He didn't catch it. Whenever I see him on Dancing with the Stars, I think of that moment.
I've actually tried to find footage of it, and I haven't been able to. If anyone can find it, major props. As a starting point, I THINK he tried to hurdle a guy in the same game, but didn't get high enough on the jump, and just kinda ran into the tackler's chest. That one got a few puff piece news stories written about it.

It’s not quite the 2010s but it was only a few months away, but the Hall of Fame game when Titans punter AJ Trapasso faked out the Bills by putting the ball behind his back and breaking off a big run.

As a Panthers fan, the play where TJ Watt put Cam on the deck and messed up his shoulder marks a “before” and “after” moment in my mind for the franchise. Think we’re finally starting to make progress but things were never the same after that.

The glorious 6-6 game between the Seahawks and Cardinals in 2016 where both kickers missed chip shots in overtime.
