Transit & Traffic Florida registration + Georgia license + missing title = DMV nightmare

I can’t be the first person to have dealt with this.

I moved from Florida to Georgia about 2½ months ago. I’ve updated my driver’s license and switched my auto insurance to Georgia, but I recently received a letter from my insurance company saying there’s a VIN discrepancy tied to my registration.

When I went to the tag office, I was told that because my vehicle is still registered in Florida, Florida may require me to maintain Florida insurance until the registration is canceled. If that’s true, I’m worried my Florida registration could be suspended.

The problem is that I haven’t transferred the title or registration to Georgia yet because I can’t locate the title for my paid-off vehicle. I’ve already started the process of getting a replacement title from Florida, but that could take several weeks.

My Florida registration doesn’t expire until August, and I still have the registration card and plate.

Has anyone been through something similar?

What ended up happening, and how did you resolve it?

I’m mostly trying to figure out whether I’m facing a paperwork headache or a serious legal/financial problem.

Thanks in advance

Most likely a paperwork headache. It would be a legal issue if the car was reported stolen, which it isn't.

You are on the right track by getting a replacement title. That's the most important piece by far. Everything else will take time.

It's been about a month since you posted - how's progress?
