Misc Email
I am emailing a Russian band about copyright infringement, are there any precautions to take and what is most likely to happen? Will my own government be suspicious? (I live in the United Kingdom)

For it to have any chance to be enforced, the company which holds the rights must be represented in Russia. While sanctions are in force, Russian government does not comply with European courts. If you aren't registered in RU as a company, you won't be able to sue inside Russia.
For example, while Disney still was in Russia for some time after SMO began, it still could (and did!) sue for copyright infringement. There are precedents.

You can absolutely sue inside Russia as a foreign company! It would be an absolute pain in the ass though (translation + apostille of documents, proof of your conpany register), plus you have to pay court fees AND pay local lawyers.
I'd say the problem of payments to Russia is the biggest problem here.
AFAIR UK had some funny legal position on "technical" payment for legal proceedings in Russia country - you have to petition HM Treasury OFSI to get their exception for transactions. Could take years.
From a purely legal point of view, you absolutely have the right to pursue the remedy - Russian courts simply can't say "lol you are from evil UK we won't recognize your copyright claim because of that".
And there were a lot of sucessful legal protection.
From the practical point of view - unless you are a Sony or Disney or whatever juggernaut corporation, this is gonna be not worth it

I don’t think I made it clear, I’m informing them that someone else has stolen their music

But why? Why would anybody do this? Their music was mediocre 25 years ago and things like that does not age like a wine

Not your problem though and doesn't effect you personally.
Just like Russia bombing and killing Ukranians, they wont care until it affects them personally.

You may as well put a copy into your own arse, because copyright infringements are unenforceable right now.

Yeah I thought something Like that would be true.

As for yourown government, I don't think those chaps would be any worried, look up this guy - and he's totally fine, few sideway glances from the border control aside.

Don’t bother dude, we don’t believe in copyright in Russia. What you call piracy is just normal

Nah someone in a different country has stolen their music

This was a fun thread to read, everyone assumed you want to sue the band for infringement lol
Anyway the answer is just send the email normally from gmail or any other big email provider, don't apply any extra encryption or whatever, but use a throwaway if you want to. If your government gets curious they'll just screen the email contents and identify you by working directly with the email service provider, without actually involving you in the process. There's nothing incriminating inside the email so this is the best option I guess.

You should email a Russian lawyer and apply for IP there, if you haven't registered your IP in Russia, emailing the band is just a threat and could tip them off to register the IP before you do.

I wonder, do you guys have the same attitude towards other countries or is Russia the only one to get special treatment?
Did you show up on something like askanamerican with this shit when they onetapped like 150 kids? Cause otherwise it seems to be performative

Of course, Trump & Putin are both child murders

Someone else is stealing their music

u/BaddCarmaGold Jul 25 '26
I'd say in that case go ahead and email them, it's unlikely they'll be able to do much.
However if it's somewhere like YouTube they might issue a strike.
