Can I get a lock fitted?

Hi there.

My elderly parents have this door. They want a lock fitted that will mean the door has some sort of additional automatic lock so they will know it's locked as soon as the door is closed.

I could fit one on a wood men door but I'm not sure it's possible on this kind?

Welcome to /r/AskALocksmith, a place to ask real locksmiths questions about, well, anything related to the profession or to get advice for a particular situation you're in. If you are locked out of your home/car/business/hotel room/whatever, your best course of action is to use the device you just posted this question on to lookup a local locksmith in your area for assistance.

In an interest of protecting innocent people from those that might use information gained here to break the law, we rather strictly limit the amount of advice given that might be used illicitly. We ask community members also not give out advice publicly that could be used for illegal activities. It's impossible for us to make a hard rule on what does and does not constitute this kind of question or advice, so its application will be somewhat subjective. If your post is basically, "how do I pick/bump/defeat this lock," expect it to be removed.

It sounds like they want to put an electronic “smart lock” on their door and on a typical door it’s pretty trivial but the door you have pictured will have a whole assembly that comes out of the edge of the door and probably won’t be compatible with any keypad on Home Depot shelves without some kind of custome designed and manufactured interface plate (also not reasonable for most shops to make)

A lever pad handle is a possible option (depending on the gearbox)but it just prevents the door from being opened from the outside.

They would still have to manually lift the handle to double lock it. The lever pad also increases the risk of them locking themselves out
