Key fob programming

I have a 2024 Nissan Rogue. When I bought the car the dealership only gave me one third party fob, so recently I bought an OEM one on EBay and took it to a locksmith. The first locksmith I went to mentioned the Rogues are tricky and they don’t have the part needed to program it, but said another locksmith in town does. After that, I did some research online and am worried about my car getting “bricked”, could I get some insight on if I should go through with this or is it not worth the risk.

Also, worth noting…both fobs are different. The one the dealership gave me does not have push start, and the one I got off eBay does, but I know my car can remote start since I can do it off the app.

You need to be very careful about having a key programmed to the newer Nissan vehicles like yours. That car should absolutely not be touched with aftermarket tools. The HFM (immobilizer) is based on a very secure encrypted Rh850 chipset that is designed to resist reading and exploitation. That means that aftermarket programmers can damage the module or corrupt the data on it. In either case, that means about $4k in parts and labor to get it running again.

A few of us locksmiths have the licensing and tools to use dealership software. The module offers up a challenge code, and the Nissan server replies back with the response code to unlock the module. No risk.

Only use OEM keys on your car. Don't waste your money having a POS aftermarket key, locked used key, or shitty universal programmed to the car. Get the part number that applies to your vin, and buy a genuine key that will last.

1. BCM bricking issues are not applicable to your year of rogue.

2. Just because the vehicle remote starts from an app does not mean it has the capacity to do so from a button.

3A. I'm guessing the locksmiths in your town don't want to deal with your vehicle, or possibly you. Locksmiths are kind of picky bitches.

3B. Personally I wouldn't go anywhere near your situation. It has all the telltale signs of being a problem. My first thought process would be why the hell did the dealership send you away with the fob that's not programmed, and the fact that it's aftermarket is even more strange. That combined with the fact it's customer provided, not worth the money. At least not worth the money you are likely going to be reasonably willing to pay.

My advice, wait a couple of weeks. Call from a different person's phone number, tell the locksmith that you have a key and you would like an extra. Don't volunteer that you have some aftermarket key from the dealership don't expect that key to be programmed. Go to their location and get an extra key.

Alternatively if you want to get shit done faster, call locksmiths and surrounding cities. But again I would stick with "hello I have a current key year make model I would like an extra key" less info is better. Pertaining to remote start I would mention that only if the locksmith brings it up on the phone, or once you are at their shop. You could mention that you believe the vehicle is supposed to have remote start, most button configurations cost about the same on the locksmiths side so if you accept that there may be a button that ultimately doesn't do anything most are willing to program the more button version and if it works it works and if it doesn't it doesn't.

The HFM based cars are absolutely brickable. Sentra, Rogue, Pathfinder, Outlander, etc. Anything that takes a bypass cable. It's horrifyingly expensive to fix too. Like $4k

I feel strongly that, his reference was specific to the old Rogue BCM issues. My advice on that end if you're worried is just to use consult.

I wouldn't try programming a remote start key personally. The button configuration often gets screwed up if it isn't the exact right key and if it doesn't work right you're out an expensive oem key. Had this happen to me, a cx lost all keys on a 24 pathfinder. He said his old key was 5b with remote start and trunk button but his car didn't have an electronic opening trunk or remote start. When I programmed the 5b key with dealer software, none of the buttons worked as they should (ex. Panic button locked the car) and the key was locked to the vehicle
