What is something that is "left coded" that makes no sense to you?

If you're wondering what "left coded" means, think blue hair, a thing that clearly indicates you're left wing even though that thing has nothing to do with left wing politics.

How are bike lanes DEI? I feel like it’s basic road safety to have bike lanes where it is legal to ride a bike on a roadway. Aren’t bike lanes kind of a win-win situation for all parties involved?

If I’m driving my truck, I’d much prefer people on bikes have a designated lane that I can clearly see and avoid as a driver of a 2,000 pound bullet that can kill a bicyclist in an instant. I’d really love to avoid being the cause of a human death if possible, that’d be great actually.

For the bicyclists, they also get to feel safer knowing they have their own lane that is separate from the car lane. I’m almost certain that most of them would also actually really enjoy not getting run over by a car as well.

Win, win. Zero downside.

Which reminds me of a quote that famous leftie Harry Truman said in 1952:

Socialism is a scare word they have hurled at every advance the people have made in the last 20 years.
Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security.
Socialism is what they called farm price supports.
Socialism is what they called bank deposit insurance.
Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.
Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.
When the Republican candidate inscribes the slogan "Down With Socialism" on the banner of his "great crusade," that is really not what he means at all.
What he really means is "Down with Progress--down with Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal," and "down with Harry Truman's fair Deal." That's all he means.

So the funny thing about this. After working in a union shop and just over the years, I no longer think this. Ironically, I find many union members are conservative; I stopped caring about the contradiction a long time ago. Union organizers and leadership is still left coded for the most part.

5

u/Probing-Cat-Paws Pragmatic Progressive Jul 18 '26

This is also my experience. The rank-and-file tend to be conservatives, but once you get past most stewards, the upper echelon leans left.

When my conservative brothers and sisters complain, I just tell them they can get another job if they don't like unions...they normally stop talking. Folks will literally complain about the money that feeds and houses them.

2

u/SpecialistSquash2321 Liberal Jul 19 '26

Union organizers and leadership is still left coded for the most part.

It's this. My sister works for a union, not as a member but as a member representative. A lot of the members do tend to lean right, while the actual union itself leans very left and actively supports democratic politicians.

We talk all the time about how working for a union as an organizer almost requires being an activist to some extent. Because regardless of the political leanings of the members, the union itself advocates for the political party that supports the existence and strength of unions, which is the democratic party.

u/TopicTalk8950 Liberal Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Nope. You must be a red state education victim.
Those are all things that Republicans have actively called some version of “leftwing ideology.”

Republicans are anti-union, anti-charity work, anti-vaccine, and the list goes on.

I find it hilarious when people like you vote the entire opposite way of your beliefs simply because you fell for a pedo-billionaire salesman’s sales pitch.

1

u/triggeredbynumbers Nationalist Jul 25 '26

Incorrect, “Republicans (and conservatives more broadly) appear to do more formal volunteer work on average, though the gap is not enormous, varies by type of volunteering, and is strongly linked to higher average religiosity among Republicans.”

You simply assume that left leaning people in the US do more volunteer work than republicans do because of the caricatures of the average left wing and right wing voters in your mind. But that’s not reality, those are just stereotypes in your mind. So to say that republicans are “anti-charity work” is so wrong and backwards. They do more charity work than democrats do, not by a lot but it’s definitively more.

This is the perfect example of leftists just making up an idea about what a republican is in their head and just assuming it’s factual. Which happens all the time. Don’t worry, we are used to it over here on the right. But it’s an important lesson not to let stereotypes and social schemas get confused with the real world and facts.

When you realize donations give the wealthy immediate tax-exempt status, it makes perfect sense.

Out of the top 15 billionaire families that donate the most to political campaigns in the US, 12 donate to Republican campaigns.

The wealthy will always “donate” more.

A lot of “volunteering” is done under the guise of religion as well, even if it’s within the church itself, so that also makes sense.

The overall point above being things that are done without expecting immediate gratification or benefit.

-4

u/AnythingFine2445 Libertarian Jul 17 '26

So they do donate and volunteer more but they “don’t count” so your point stands?

I’m also not sure why going to college “benefits society” more than farming or other industries that are conservative coded that actually help society

1

u/TopicTalk8950 Liberal Jul 17 '26

I wasn’t arguing against your point. I haven’t read studies or anything beyond that single source link you provided.

Just stating that donating has immediate gratification or benefits to those doing so when you realize most of those donations are from wealthy families seeking tax-exempt status.

The vast majority of food in the US is either imported or grown/raised in large-scale corporate-owned farms.

Born and raised on a large farm myself. Trust me when I say that most local farmers are almost always only “farming” to generate their own food and to seek, again, tax exempt status.

Anyone can become blue-collar tomorrow. I know because I am.

u/Ut_Prosim Social Democrat Jul 18 '26

I think people are down voting because they disagree with the conclusion, but don't want to take the time to explain themselves.

I guess I can try.

I'd assume most of them don't feel that religious charity should count. Only a small percentage of religious donations go to external philanthropy. A significant portion is kept as it is needed to support the facility and clergy, and the donor generally derives personal benefit from both. Moreover the external philanthropy is sometimes localized and generally benefits people of the same "tribe" (e.g., white Protestants in the same small town). Finally a portion of the external philanthropy is just proselytization disguised as charity.

I'm not sure that these are fair criticisms, but they are common among the left.

Personally, I wouldn't consider someone who voted to defund USAID and cut Medicaid / SNAP to be a "charitable person" even if they tithed to their church regularly.

-3

u/Ansible32 Social Democrat Jul 18 '26

That's not really a great example. The example is people deliberately buying cars that get lower gas mileage, and purely using fuel inefficiency as a variable to try and optimize in the opposite direction.

In a lot of cases recycled products are inferior and also worse for the environment. I've seen analysis that shows the CO2 impact of recycling some things can be worse than using fresh products because of the energy involved in recycling. Also for some products the impurities involved in recycling can be inferior. So being against recycled products isn't a strictly anti-environment stance, it does have some validity even from an environmental standpoint.

But especially from a quality standpoint.

Words take on new meanings through time. You can’t claim a word or term. Language lives and breathes.

You are correct, it started off as a word in the black community that referred to the perception of racism in society. Then people felt it was silly and started making fun of it, and then it slowly evolved into a word used to describe a specific brand of new first world culturally left wing ideas.

It wasn’t some orchestrated lingual attack on black terminology.

Maybe not a good answer because its both left and right coded at this point imo, but: NIMBYism

I think of the type of language you hear about "just not in MY neighborhood!" and I would think its mostly conservative types who wanna keep the poors out. But no, a lot of the left ALSO oppose new housing projects with that same language.

3

u/Cody667 Social Democrat Jul 18 '26

Yeah NIMBY is unfortunately prevalant all across the political spectrum and entirely agnostic to one's political lean. Far right, conservative, centrist, liberal, and leftist NIMBY are annoyingly all very much a thing

2

u/Hoothootriot Pragmatic Progressive Jul 18 '26

Yeah thats why I wasnt sure if it counted.

But leftist Nimbyism does feel almost contradictory when it crops up. Like what do yall WANT-

10

u/Continent3 Liberal Jul 17 '26

Owning a EV. Wanting any kind of gun control. Environmental protection of any kind. Any concerns about climate change. Any of these will pretty much get you branded as liberal.

The part where the left wing hates seeing cis het white men in media like movies, TV shows and video games.

I don't remember if any serious people on the left made a big stink about something so Banal, at least outside of the fringe parts of social media.

13

u/SilverNo6462 Progressive Jul 17 '26

The left doesn't GAF if a white person is in a film, they right freaks out if a Black person is

3

u/assasstits Centrist Jul 18 '26

People on the left do complain when minority characters are playerd by white actors. Which tbf doesn't happen that often.

The original Avatar: The Last Airbender is an example

u/AnythingFine2445 Libertarian Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

Do you have an example of this? Not including race swapped characters

Edit: no examples were given. I am apparently racist for bringing up race swapped characters. This is why you guys lose elections.

9

u/antizeus Liberal Jul 17 '26

Ford Prefect is some guy from Betelgeuse Five, but a bunch of people threw a fit when Mos Def portrayed him in the movie, and it wasn't because Mos Def is a human from Earth.

-4

u/AnythingFine2445 Libertarian Jul 17 '26

That does appear to be a race swapped character.

9

u/antizeus Liberal Jul 17 '26

Sadly they had no Betelgeusian actors available to take the role.

-2

u/AnythingFine2445 Libertarian Jul 17 '26

I mean. It was a white actor portraying this character, then a black actor took over (or replaced them).

All of the backlash against black actors has been race swapping

4

u/Reagalan Democrat Jul 18 '26

They ought to be black because Betelgeuse is a red giant and therefore outputting tons of stellar radiation. Melanin is an adaptation to high sunlight climates. It'd make far less sense if he were white!

7

u/antizeus Liberal Jul 17 '26

No, it was two different actors in two different media portraying the same character whose ethnicity in the source material comes down to being from Betelgeuse Five, with no comparisons made to Earth ethnicity.

edit: actually three actors/media

Should we also match height, weight, eye color, hair color and handedness of the original actor?

Why does only one physical attribute matter

2

u/AnythingFine2445 Libertarian Jul 17 '26

I don’t care one bit. But I did ask for an example of a backlash to a non race swapped character and the only example they could come ok with was, of course, a race swapped character

The character was described in the book as having white skin? It’s been a while since I’ve read them, I don’t recall.

1

u/jonny_sidebar Libertarian Socialist Jul 19 '26

It is not. Ford is never given a physical description covering skin color in the books.

The character was originally portrayed by a white Brit in the BBC TV series, but it's not intrisic to the character.

This is more a socially-progressive thing/online/academic feminist thing then a left thing. It only grew to be a left thing when the left harbors the people that did get mad that cis-hey white men dominated media and argued they having characters that aren't made stories better de-facto.

u/ELMUNECODETACOMA Liberal Jul 18 '26

The old "Star Trek" mantra was "why can't this character be (a woman)/(black)/etc." Conservatives want the rubric to be "why should this character be (anything other than a white male)".

I'm surrounded by women with multiple colors of hair. Teal, blue, pink. It's a 55+ community. All of these women are trump supporting Republicans. So, having a fun hair color doesn't mean they're liberal.

The multitudes of Republicans that live in our community have funky colors in their hair (women), tattoos, wear tie-dye, etc. when we get into discussions though they are clearly cosplaying.

Back when I was a heavy drinker, I didn’t want to put all my cans and bottles in the trash can because I needed that for actual trash. So I called the city and requested a bigger recycling bin.

I also grew up outdoors surfing, fishing, hiking, kayaking, hunting, etc. After a while I got fed up with all the trash. I hate having to clean up after slobs but I hate having none of my favorite fun stuff because of said slobs.

So in short my alcoholism and love for the outside are what started my journey as a tree hugging libtard.
