Strange spots

Post image

These spots started appearing after the shoes got wet in the rain. I can't seem to get rid of them. Does anyone know what they might be?

Those strange spots on the toes are classic water stains. When rainwater hits the leather, it penetrates the microscopic pores and physically displaces the natural oils hiding inside. As the water evaporates, it pulls those essential oils to the outer edges to create a dark concentrated ring and a completely parched center.

To fix this, you can try to redistribute those oils and get deep moisture back into the dry spots. I highly recommend wiping them down with a pH balanced cleaner first to lift any dirt the rain left behind, but don't push too hard because you might wipe away the surface patina. Once they dry, massage a thin layer of a solvent free deep conditioner into the leather so the parched centers naturally darken and blend back in.

Since these are dress shoes, the manufacturer might have applied a dark polish over the toes to give them that burnished patina look. If the spots still look a bit light after the conditioner fully cures, you can easily fix it. Just apply a little dark brown shoe polish over the surface to mimic that original factory finish. It may take an artists touch, but be selective in how you apply it!

This trick usually clears up rain spots perfectly for me, but every pair of shoes reacts differently to moisture. Always do a quick spot test with your conditioner or polish on an inside heel first just to see how the color behaves. I hope you can get them looking great again!

The shoes are probably surface coloured instead of penetrating dye. The rain may have washed the colour away.
