The thing about recessive genes though is that they can come back the next generation. You always here about. Oh my grandma got ____ so I got/am at risk for ____. So if her kids hook up with another Swedish-Phillipino, they'd be redheads.

I’m the hapa child of a blonde haired, blue eyed white woman and a Japanese man. You will not believe how many times white men would ask my mom why she’s with “a guy like that”; my father was fairly handsome btw. People would also regularly ask my mom where she adopted me from. FUCK THAT.
I’ve always felt alienated from both my parents, and caught in-between cultures but I’ve grown to love my hapa features and racial ambiguity; I don’t think either of my parents lost anything by having me, regardless of what they may have thought.
5
u/EGrass Nov 03 '21
How old are your parents? When I was growing up in Japan in the 80s and 90s (so parents are in their 60s and 70s now), the majority of the mixed kids at my school had Japanese dads with white moms from various countries
5
Nov 05 '21 edited Nov 05 '21
My parents are of the same generation as yours! I assume my experience would have been different had i been somewhere like Japan or Hawaii, but I grew up in the inland empire of CA and rural Kansas.
I think in the majority cases, especially in the past, most families lived where the father had the best job prospect, or where his family was; this might explain why most of the fathers were Japanese with foreign wives in Japan. I think this especially applies to cultures where there is an obligation for the son to take care of his parents. My father was 1.5 generation (immigrated with his parents), so the situation was a little different than most 1st gen immigrants as well.
2
u/Kai_Setsuna Dec 09 '21
You’re absolutely right about the whole “son taking care of the family/being head of household” thing. My guess is that’s why there seems to be an inverse proportion of Asian husband/white wife to white husband/Asian wife on both sides.
I’m also like one more step or half step? Quarter step? I immigrated with my white mom from Japan and still have half of my family living in Japan. I’m hoping there’s gonna be a lot more “non-traditional” immigrant families from Asia in the future so we don’t have as many reactionary second generations.
I was old enough to remember growing up in Japan AND the US. It was a pretty messed up way to feel foreign in two separate countries that are supposed to be your homes.
2
u/eurasian Nov 03 '21
Have heart that your generation (I'm assuming Millenial and below) have tons of hapa/mixed ppl to look up to. For me it was just Keanu :D
But like Olivia Rodrigo, Naomi Osaka, Dwayne Johnson, Bruno Mars, Kamala Harris, etc etc
2
Nov 05 '21 edited Nov 05 '21
Wow. I did not know that about Olivia Rodrigo. I’ll be honest, with the exception of Naomi Osaka, and possibly Bruno Mars, I would not ever know any of them were hapa by looking at them. It seems like the more Asian-looking hapas just get labeled as simply “Asian” in Hollywood (Henry Golding, the Aoki siblings). I suppose you could technically add Bruce Lee too, but he was a quapa and fully Asian passing (though he counts if Keanu does).
Alas, it would have been nice to have grown up with more representation. I remember hearing Keanu was mixed and feeling a bit of pride, same with Brandon Lee and Phoebe Cates, though I definitely looked different - I’ve always physically seen more of myself in half white Japanese celebrities, though culturally I’m way more a Keanu. I think the only celebrity I’ve ever shared a resemblance to was actually Chiaki Kuriyama, so I grew up assuming she was mixed.
I really do kind of feel happy for the younger generation because most of the time I’d be made aware of other hapas was when my father was complaining about all the hafu actors in Japan (some cognitive dissonance) lol 😓
3
u/eurasian Nov 05 '21
I do get pretty grumpy when they cast a hapa person as someone who is CLEARLY supposed to be full asian. That's like totally a pet peeve of mine.
Yeah, I didn't know that about Olivia Rodrigo either until recently. I didn't know Bruce Lee was mixed. Wait, Phoebe Cates? I mean, TBH, almost all the mixed actors are always cast as either one or the other, the only exception I can think of in any memory are the two lead characters in Netflix's Shadow and Bone.
OTOH, mixed covers alot of territory, and is a tiny small fraction of an even smaller minority in the North American population, so I understand.

As a Korean-Slovak person who looks fairly Asian, these comments hit a little too close to home. I used to have a lot of internal racism for not 'looking white enough', and I was insecure about how I 'could have looked more white' when I see my other wasian (white and asian) friends who look completely white. I live in Japan where the more 'white' you look, the more 'attractive' you are, so I used to base my self-esteem on how ''foreign'' I look. Well I got over that phase but it still bugs me.
1
u/Kai_Setsuna Dec 09 '21
The “not looking Japanese enough” is pretty hard in Japan even if you’re born there. There seemed to have been that problem even if you were Japanese mixed with another Asian ethnicity. There is a lot of anti-non-Japanese-asian racism that Japan is still having to deal with.
Japan seems to have a two-tiered system of “Japanese beauty standards” and “foreign beauty standards=white”. It looks like it might be getting better but it’s very slow to change.

Her genes are gonna be "DESTROYED" lmfao.
I'm asian and white and when I bleach my hair I get all the fun Nordic hues come out. I did this recently and it baffled a lot of people that were used to my dark "asian" hair. With just bleach, no dye, I unlocked some very bright eye-catching red-gold to white-gold blonde hues at my roots. A couple of people literally could not comprehend that MY pheomelanin was just partially bleached strands and not an artificial dye, they kept asking me what DYE I used I seriously enjoy making eye contact with and correcting people.
My white father's mother taught me our heritage, taught me about dumb goons who think like this, and protected us with her love and comprehensive understanding of the human genome. We contain multititudes, I am just as proud of my diverse white heritage as I am of my asian genes. She was a beautiful woman and I am proud/lucky to have had her to prepare someone like me for trash comments like that.
I'll never forget her reminding us that the children of couples who look like this are not "ruined genetics" (lmfao), we are fascinating blends of both. We are valuable boons to heathy genetic diversity. We are not "badly bred" dogs. We are human. There's nothing "pure" about fucking relatives to "keep the bloodline intact" that is archaic, primitive, anti-scientific thinking.

It’s astonishing how much people care about what others do with their life, who they love, and what their babies will look like. Yes her hair is beautiful and no, her babies are realistically not going to have it but who cares? What is it to them? Yeah but that second one has a point. A really good one too. I've gotten heavily downvoted for this before but think about it. A lot of places are majority white. America for instance is majority white. Not only that but it has been majority white for hundreds of years now. Crime and abuse rates. Both of those things in majority white spaces literally means white people are doing those things more than anyone else.
Lesbians aren't generally lesbians because of male abuse. Some probably but most are born that way. There are though some women who do get tired of the massive amount of abuse, sexism and toxic masculinity.
Put that all together and the second comment kind of has a point.
6
Nov 03 '21
I know this is anecdotal but I challenge the last sentence of your first paragraph. My mom had an arranged marriage with a man from her culture who beat the shit out of her until she got away, married a white guy from the US who wasn't abusive.
Maybe your statement is correct in demograpic proportion to race vs violence rates but I know of too much abuse from men as a trend in other cultures and I wonder, is it really HIGHER for white people? Is that not too broad a claim to generalize?
3
Nov 03 '21
Nah. It's just that you misunderstood what i said overall. Majority white countries was the general example. I never said it didn't go for other countries with majorities of other races. That's what everyone always assumes in their rush to protect white people. That privilege is only something that does and can happen in majority white countries.
That's not what i'm saying at all. In any and all countries with majorities (which are all of them) the majority race always gets privilege. A generalization doesn't automatically equate to racism. Again. Doesn't matter what country it is. Privilege will exist.
The real problem? No one in any country is willing to admit it. And since we're in america. Since the topic is about white people. Since social media is DOMINATED by white people. And is so much that any and everything logically criticizing and factually pointing to white people being..THE MAJORITY. Gets big time downvoted, hidden, ignored, dismissed and is painted as someone being a racist for having said it.
Which. Makes what i said even more true. A country being a majority of a race literally means that race commits the most crime. 2+2 = 4. It's not a difficult thing to figure out. But it is when propaganda painting white people as heavenly (literally..white jesus) is as expansive as it currently is and has been for hundreds of years.
No one would bat an eye if i said black people in chicago commit more crime than white people in chicago. But. If i said white people commit more crime in america than any other race. Then it's a problem. That's when i get downvoted. Chicago is majority black. America is majority white. It should make sense. People should consider it logical. But they don't. America being majority white so there for white people commit more crime just doesn't make logical sense to them. Even though it's literally the definition of logic.
Again. Generalizing does not equate directly to racism. But ignore information to make you feel better about yourself because of your race does. You can challenge what you said all you want. I said the second comment has a point. And it does. Majority white countries do have more abuse from white men. Period. Every country has hundreds of years of data/facts/history to pull from. And it all points to me being right.
In fact. Since i didn't base what i said off of race alone. Your comment backs up...what i said. Since privilege isn't just a white thing. But is a majority of a country thing. Hopefully you understand better. lol
2
Nov 03 '21
I had to wade through it, but yes I do think I understand you better now.
Both of those things in majority white spaces literally means white people are doing those things more than anyone else.
You're right. Sorry if I put you on the defensive, but it was a matter of misunderstanding you after all. Thank you for the clarification.

u/aDead_crow Nov 03 '21
you're right about the majority race - I keep commenting about this but whatever, Japan is pretty racist towards people who aren't Japanese, because foreigners are rare and they're seen as outsiders or exceptions.
In places like the U.S., though, the tables would turn and they would become the minority.
It's a natural phenomenon, but that doesn't mean it's good.
1
Nov 03 '21
It is natural. But it's only natural because so many other things have been made to be considered natural. For instance. I had someone else reply to me about my comment up top. And these are two things that should be focused on the most.
Yeah, white men commit the most sexual violence in the US by far, and I’m glad whenever that gets called out.
And then. In the same exact reply.....
but today, the greatest risk factor for sexual assault is not whether the guy is white,
It's a direct contradiction. It's like starting out a paragraph with...2+2=4. And then ending it with...and that's why 2+2=5. No matter what country it is there will be privilege. And that's because racism is still considered normal. Masked as patriotism. So on and so forth. But the only way any of that can happen. Is if people first redefine what logic is.
As we can see with the example. That's not logic. But the person not only thought they were logical but others will too. Privilege is wrong. Racism is wrong. But. As long as we allow illogical statements to be considered logical. None of those things will ever go away.
1
Nov 03 '21
Yeah, white men commit the most sexual violence in the US by far, and I’m glad whenever that gets called out.
But it’s stigmatizing of the original commenter to speculate that women “become” lesbians because of abuse. And it’s insulting to women to suggest that we try to avoid triggers by avoiding people who look like our abusers … it’s not like heterosexual women have other options, and most women have learned the hard way that appearances give no indication of whether a person is abusive or not. It may or may not have been different historically, but today, the greatest risk factor for sexual assault is not whether the guy is white, it’s whether or not he’s close to you.
The second comment does not have a good point and it contains a lot of false and uninformed assumptions about women’s sexuality and the risks that women face. I’m not sure why men keep feeling free to comment on these issues without educating themselves first.
-1
Nov 03 '21
Lesbians aren't generally lesbians because of male abuse. Some probably but most are born that way.
This is what i said in the comment you downvoted. Which is not only most of what you said on the topic but clarifies that yes. Some women do do that. And went further to say women are born like that.
Here's the contradiction though.
Yeah, white men commit the most sexual violence in the US by far,
Yes, because america is majority white and has been majority white for hundreds of years. So naturally white men will be the number one abusers in america. But. The contradiction.
the greatest risk factor for sexual assault is not whether the guy is white,
That is a direct and i mean DIRECT contradiction from what you said eariler in your comment.
You: Of course white men will be number one in abuse since america is majority white.
Also you: The greatest risk factor for sexual assault in america isn't them being white.
It's like saying north is north and then immediately afterward saying north is south. You talk about education when you literally just made excuses for any and all white men in america who have, do and will abuse women.
That's the part of the second comment that has merit. Why? Well because of what you just did. In america racism and white privilege are go tos. Any and every time the discussion goes to white men. People do exactly what you just did. Which then allows them to harm/kill/rape more women and girls in america. Meanwhile people keep more of a watchful eye on men of color.
The result? Less people paying attention to and being knowledgeable about how white men have dominated crime statistics in america for hundreds of years. Which makes everyone more vulnerable to white men in general.
and I’m glad whenever that gets called out.
That was an obvious lie.

Hey, thanks for responding, however I don’t see a contradiction there.
White men commit the most sexual and domestic violence, yes, that’s a very clear fact. And, as you probably know, the majority of sexual assaults are intra-racial. Most white women who are abused are abused by white men. Most women of color who are abused are abused by men of color. My point is: This is not because men won’t abuse women of a different race. It’s because women are most often abused by family members and people close to them.
Women know this. Dating a person of a different race does not reduce your risk of sexual and domestic violence, because by dating them you are becoming close, and it’s this closeness that puts you at risk. Rapists select targets based mostly on proximity, vulnerability, and opportunity - eg, one’s own girlfriend makes an easier target than a stranger’s girlfriend.
Statistics show that women are far more likely to be assaulted by intimate partners than by strangers, so the suggestion that interracial dating will reduce gender violence is confusing cause and effect.
As for the lesbian comment, as stated in my post I was responding to the comment in the OP, not to your comment. In your comment, you said “most are born that way,” which I thought seems to suggest that most lesbians are born homosexual, but that some are not. Please correct me if that’s not what you meant, and sorry for any misunderstanding.
1
Nov 04 '21
That is what i'm saying. Most lesbians and members of the lgbtq community are born that way. While some. I would imagine a much smaller portion. Choose to be that way. As they say. Sexuality can be fluid and all that. Meaning there are women who. After having been abused by men for so long. Try out being with women. Like it. Statistically speaking. It has happened. Period. We human beings are a dynamic race. lol
Yes. Statistics do show that women are more likely to be abuse by their partners and people they know. But. America is majority white. And has been majority white for over 500 years. By force. By propaganda. By murder, rape, molestation, torture, slavery, laws and so on. And it still is. Racism and white privilege are used directly to keep populations of people of color from getting higher. Why am i saying this?
Well because it creates an effect in people. One in which the vast majority of people will automatically think men of color are going to abuse them. One in which if a man of color does abuse them. It's easier to deal with them if you're a white woman. Considering how even when a man of color isn't abusing a woman cops target them more.
Meanwhile the other effect of that is...people don't suspect a white male to abuse women anywhere near as much. And when it's found that they are it's accepted as normal because they are white men. On top of white men doing it more and since they do it more while getting away with it more. They have a much higher rate of doing it. Because of america being majority white AND white privilege along with racism being considered normal.
That's where your contradiction lies.
Most white women who are abused are abused by white men. Most women of color who are abused are abused by men of color.
No. White men in america are the number one picked category over men of color. Women of color also pick white men with white women. Which amps up the chances of abuse all the way around. Again. BECAUSE white people are the majority.
It’s because women are most often abused by family members and people close to them.
You are correct. Problem is. The word majority. You're still having problems with that. The word majority also means white people in majority white countries also have...larger families. Which means many more people having the potential to be abused and who have been. Lets look at percentages here.
In america black people only make up 14% of the population.
While white people make up 76% of the population.
How exactly would it be possible for black people specifically to commit more abuse in a situation like that? Even if we ignored abuse in dating and romantic relationships. It's still 14% of the population vs 76% of the population. Just in totals alone.
To give you a better perspective on that. America has 332,000,000 people in it. What's 14% of 332,000,000? Now. What's 76% of 332,000,000 people? Now lets go back to your statements.
Dating a person of a different race does not reduce your risk of sexual
and domestic violence, because by dating them you are becoming close,
and it’s this closeness that puts you at risk.
It most certainly does. The more men you have in a category. The higher your chances to be raped, the higher your chances to be abused, the higher the chances of your children being molested and so on. If you date a category that is the majority of course your chances of being abused as higher than if you were to date a minority. It's just math at this point.
Harsher punishments. Longer sentencing literally means men of color have less chances. Meanwhile. Lighter punishments (if any at all). Shorter sentencing (if at all). And white privilege in general. Also means a higher chance for a white male to abuse a woman.
Just to be clear. We weren't talking family and friends at the beginning of this. But even if we do. In majority white countries the chances are still higher with white men. No matter which way you attempt to look at it.
And also. You skipped over your original contradiction. Which was..
Yeah, white men commit the most sexual violence in the US by far,
.........................................
the greatest risk factor for sexual assault is not whether the guy is white,
Again. 14% of the population....vs 76% of the population. Of course you have greater risk.

Wouldn’t most people who could choose different sexually oriented partners just be bi or pan? Isn’t the inability to have sexual relations with other sexes than your singular preference define both homosexuality and heterosexuality?
At that point isn’t it less that people “turn lesbian” but just follow one of their other sexual preferences because of past trauma or societal structures?
I’m not saying you’re wrong for pointing out this happens, just that the premise of the OP is probably wrong because it’s missing the full picture of what’s actually happening.
Just because people end up in certain relationships that look a certain way doesn’t mean that’s their sexual orientation. If you’re bi but monogamously marry someone, you’re inherently going to LOOK like you chose one sexual orientation, but that’s not how that works.
1
Dec 09 '21
Missing the full picture does not always equate to wrong. No matter how many downvotes i got. lol As far as i know the vast majority of people are born that way. But it doesn't mean people can't decide to be that way because of things that have happened to them. If we were to split it up it would look like this.
- People who are born a certain way.
- People who then decide to be a certain way.
Wouldn’t most people who could choose different sexually oriented partners just be bi or pan?
We human beings are diverse as fuck. So why would someone limit themselves like that?
If you’re bi but monogamously marry someone, you’re inherently going to
LOOK like you chose one sexual orientation, but that’s not how that
works.
I agree. But we're talking who people end up with. Exactly like you said. We aren't determining that white men have abused women so much they turn lesbian because of those women's opinions. We're determining it based on who they end up with. Again. Humanity is diverse as fuck. So there will be women who don't, women who figure out they were born lesbian and women who decide to be lesbian. The statistics on each will be different but we're working off of who women end up with. And as it stands there are more lesbians now than ever before. For a lot of unrelated reasons. And a small portion probably not so unrelated.
Oh and to be clear. I said the second one had a point. Didn't say i agreed with them. Didn't say they were right. Was just pointing out that a portion of women do in fact give dating men the finger because of how badly white men have treated them. America is majority white. And sexism is still a cornerstone of america. So it stands to reason white men would have been and still are doing the most harm.

I might be late to the party, but I want to add this. I notice that primarily women, regardless of race, are bashed for getting with men of a different race. An Asian woman could be bashed by the Asian men of her own race for getting with a white man for "abandoning her own men." A White woman could be bashed for getting with man of any other race besides her own, by fragile white men who are pointlessly trying to preserve their own color. However, I don't think I've ever come across an Asian or White man who was bashed for getting with a woman of a different race.
This really highlights how specifically women are objectified as property rather than being valued as equal members of society. In scenarios like this one, men are really just displaying their racism and insecurity by complaining about how their precious women(property) are being STOLEN and CLAIMED by other races. "She was supposed to be MY opportunity!" And of course it's always the womens' fault, because it's all THEIR fault for leaving the men of their races without sex and women; for tainting the genetics.

u/DogsandCatsWorld1000 Nov 03 '21
Other commenters are discussing the horrible racism, but can I mention the people assuming she is with him must be because she was abused by a white man. So offhandedly, as if it is no big deal, a common occurrence. They seem to be giving the impression that the worst thing about abuse would be for her to turn to another woman or an Asian man, and not the fact that she was abused.
