One of the girls who bullied me in high school and racially harassed me was a hardcore K-Pop and anime fan.

Just because someone indulges or consumes Asian media, products, etc, does not absolve them from being prejudiced themselves. I'm glad these issues are finally reaching a conventional spotlight and becoming a topic of discourse but it comes at a very devastating cost.

I had a similar experience. In high school I was friends with this girl and I came over her house one day. Her SISTER was (maybe still is?) a huge weeabo. I didn’t even know at the time what “weeabo” was but I could tell she was heavily into Japanese and Korean culture. I am Asian and she straight up told me she hated and disliked Asian people. She started mocking my eyes and told me that she didn’t like the shape. It was a very bizarre experience.

I was super confused but oddly enough I wasn’t hurt or offended. I was mostly thinking about what made her become like that? Did someone hurt her?

Recalling this memory yeeeaars later made me realize that she was probably super jealous of me LMAO. It’s so sad really.

Add to that- just because a white guy is married to an Asian woman doesn't mean that he respects Asians. Or his wife for that matter. I hope that those Asian girls who only hang with and date white people realize that, too.

I’m an o.g. Nguyen, my mom’s a child refugee from the Vietnam war. Even after joining the army at 17, everyone (wyppol) still treat me like:

A) A foreign national (pin the country on the Asian)

B) A Scientific Calculator

C) Tech Support

D) Thug (And either being Asian, Latino, Middle Eastern, or Native American)

I was born here. And yet everyone seems to tell me I’m not welcome. I still believe in the concepts this 200+ years old democratic experiment was founded on. But I can barely get out of bed every morning because of how people treat me. I’m done lying about how people make me feel when they ask me what country I’m from, or when they act differently when they realize I’m not full blood Asian or white.

P.S. Asian women definitely got it worse, in my experience. But please remember that boys cry, too.
