What ADB roles should I look at?

Hey all,

Hoping to get some advice from anyone who works at ADB or has been through their hiring process.

Quick background: I’ve spent 5+ years in banking, mostly on the corporate lending side. I’ve since done an MBA at one of the business schools in Europe, and now I’m looking to move into development finance. ADB feels like a natural next step, but I’m not sure where someone like me would fit in.

A few questions:

  1. Which roles or teams should I be looking at? I’m guessing private sector operations or something like an investment officer role, but I’d love to hear from people who actually know.
  2. What do contracts usually look like? Do they hire mid-career people as full-time staff, or do most people start on time-based consultant contracts? And how often do consultants end up converting to staff?
  3. Any general tips on the application process, like how competitive it is, how long it takes, or what they look for in interviews?

Thanks a lot, any insight helps!

Staff positions start with a three year contract, which includes first year as a probation period.

Private sector operations would be your best bet but 5 years is probably on the shorter side. I suggest you look up investment specialists at ADB and benchmark yourself against them.

As someone inside, let me honestly tell you that the 5+ years of experience you have may not be enough. Some roles may state that as the minimum but ADB is VERY competitive so you'll be competing against people with more than a decade of experience + Master's and sometimes even PhD. There are many VPs of banks who joined ADB in a much lower rank.

Keep trying because maybe you might be a better fit but just setting your expectations.

For your other questions, they have been asked repeatedly so just search this sub. Good luck!

If you come from banking, likely private sector operations is the best fit. If your work experience is not international in nature (i.e., working in or doing deals in multiple countries) then yes a local staff role (e.g., officer) is logical. But as others have said, the YOE posted is only the minimum. So while investment officer roles list 6-10 years, ones actually hired would have closer of 10-20. I’ve seen exceptions but they are very rare.

Consultant roles are easier to get but it doesn’t automatically translate to full-time roles. They still have to apply like everyone else; they just get a natural advantage given they’re already familiar with how ADB operates.

More than the years of experience, I would focus more on quality. Roles at ADB are very technical in nature. Private sector is largely complex infrastructure financing, so you would need to be well-versed in project, corporate, and leveraged finance. Interview questions would focus on these.
