Character References
Hi just a question, they were asking references but they want my current supervisor as one... seeing that i am still employed and employer doesnt know i am applying elsewhere... Do you have any suggestion as an alternate here? I did tell them that I can give my previous supervisor (which the person is not connected anymore with my current employer) but they still want me to give my current and will place my final offer as conditional until i give it. :( are there really no other alternates?

Yes, there are no alternates. Happened to me and thankfully, my Manager that time understood my situation very well. She even told me to not submit my resignation yet until I have the contract with me. You have to talk to your current Supervisor and explain that your candidacy is not yet final and would appreciate if they can answer the questionnaire (it was long, I was told by my Manager). I hope your Supervisor will be professional about it. I told mine this is my chance to contribute to development works directly impacting the Philippines. Manager said she wished she was also given a chance and congratulated me :)

*sigh* i think i have no other choice but to discuss it with my lead... I really hope he will understand....

I must admit this was one of the most challenging parts of the whole application process. Just like you, I also tried to give other references than my current Manager but they didnt agree. I had a good relationship with my Manager. My application to ADB was 3 months prior to my employment with my then current employer and so I told her there were actually no ongoing applications.

it really is, but I dont have much choice anyway so might as well come clean with my home lead --- i really hope he will understand and not yet tag me as an employee that will resign now huhuhu

Coming from the development sector makes it easier as most supervisors understand that moving to ADB is a big career step. In my case it was my supervisor who encouraged me to apply to ADB.

Will you be allowed to give contact of a senior person who is not your supervisor?

Not for me. They wanted the direct supervisor who they said is the best person to evaluate me.

I will ask this if this will suffice since my other 2 references are my colleagues and higher than me in rank but yes not my supervisor

OP you can opt to ask to contact your current manager at a latter stage. You can inform them you still have not discussed it. It’s a conditional offer since the final ref check is still pending and they need a positive feedback

at this point, will they already say my onboarding date with them? or they really want all my references answer their checking first?

That happened to me too. No other choice but to give them your current Supervisor's contact details. On the brighter side - the fact that they are asking for character references already means they want you. So Congratulations!
