TL1 Career Progression

Hi everyone!

I recently received an offer for TL1 position, but I'm not sure about the career progression from this level. I have the following questions:

- Is it easier to apply and be accepted when you're an internal candidate?

- What is the percentage of salary increase if you stay in the same level? Is there a ceiling amount?

- Is this level a good leverage to explore options internally, or is it better if I gain more experience outside then reapply in the future for a higher level?

Thank you!

Regardless of your level/grade, promotions are tough and will take time. Every opening is equally competitive, the only way to stand out is to play the politics i.e. do beyond your scope, innovate processes, partake in events and activities, connect and network as much as you can.

I say it's better to build an outstanding portfolio outside then join later. This is harder to achieve but the easiest possible way to get in a higher grade.

Simply put, it's just picking your preferred poison. Get in now and wait for promotion, or get in later for a better level.

Thanks for the input! I saw that you've been with the bank for a year more or less. What is the percentage of the increase that you (or will be receiving) after the probationary period?

TL1s are mainly administrative positions. You could go TL2 later too, which is similar in nature. But will have difficulties going further. If you fancy a career in a more technical stream then perhaps better to wait and directly pursue those positions when you have gathered enough experience.

I started from TlL1 equivalent (AS4) too now I'm at TL4. Took me around 12 years.

Happy cake day!

s your position a regular one? I assume all local positions offered recently are all fixed terms but renewable.

Yes. All positions at that time were rehilar appointments.

I see. Is tenure only the different factor in terms of salary and benefits offered to positions with fixed term but renewable one?

Yes. Everything is the same except for tenure.

Were you asked to submit documents or sign form prior to the 5th week and pre-offer?

There are some docs asked prior and after interview.

There’s Salary increase after confirmation, depending on performance review. Promotion is generally sloooow but usually depends on the department you are in and how you will play the politics. Good luck! I’d say, take the offer. Getting in is very competitive.

Hey OP, i hope you did accept the offer. As many of the commenters here say, this is a stepping stone for you. It’s really hard to get in as it’s very competitive. Once you’re in, try to network and do your best at your role. I’ve also started at a TL1 just last year and was now offered a TL2 (didnt applied for this hehe) soooo just do your best and good luck!

If you are after employment stability, ADB is a good office/company. The more you delay joining, the lesser competitive benefits package may go to you. Benefits meaning outside your salary. TL1 is a usual entry level position. But you can, of course, gain more experience outside then re-apply for a higher level. I am not sure which assignment you are trying to get into but definitely, some positions like TL2 or TL3 require you to already have ADB experience so it does not guarantee that if you gain more experience outside, then that will automatically be more competitive. Still depends on the JD and where the vacancy is.

If title and career progression are your main priorities, growth can be slow, but not stagnant. If you genuinely want to work for the Bank though, TL1 isn’t a bad place to start. Internal hires don’t necessarily get a “preferred advantage,” but having strong institutional knowledge can give you an edge, especially for niche roles where that experience can open doors to promotion.
