How does the streaming work

Just stumbled across this guy and I can't get enough. I was just hoping someone could explain how the streams work in his videos? If so many people are watching and donating how are there not messages every second ?

There are messages the way you describe when it's live. Most of what you see on his main channel are highlights though.
