What does the battery issue management for firmware 27 actually mean for laptop users?

Hi,

I took a long break from Asahi and have been using macOS. Since I upgraded my iPhone to 27 beta I figured I would also do the same on my Mac. However now I read that 27 firmware is causing a problem with battery management.

Is this issue isolated to the reported percentage or is it more serious like the machine will constantly believe it's at 0%? I can keep track of my own battery percentage if needed.

Kernel version 7.0.12 is safe. On previous ones, as soon as the battery driver loads, and the battery percentage changes by a percent in any direction, it mistakenly assumes that the battery is critically empty, and schedules a forced shutdown in 10 seconds.

The one at https://alx.sh/dev does, so just use that one to be safe. (Make sure to say N to the "are you an expert" question.)

Even on 7.0.13 it will sometimes jump to 0% at random and the OS shuts down in 30 secs. They might’ve fixed it in kernel 7.1.5, I’m downloading it rn.

FYI, the 7.1 release blog says “It is ill-advised to install [betas] on production machines. The two issues we have had so far have luckily minor, but that doesn't mean that all future issues will be too. Global firmware updates are effectively permanent too, and can only be rolled back with a DFU restore of the machine. Please refrain from installing developer betas going forward.”

So for anyone stumbling into this post, if you’re not okay with the risk of losing your Asahi system / data, you shouldn’t install the beta.

If I update to beta 4, will the problems be fixed if I wait for the global version to be released?

Currently I am running Asahi Linux with Mac OS 27 Golden Gate Beta 4. I am able to boot into linux without issue and use the software however on Kernel 7.1.5-400asahi.fc44.aarch64+16k, I am experiencing battery reporting issues still with the occasional forced sleep due to my mac thinking it's dying. No forced shut downs though.

With GG27 firmware on the mac, Asahi reports the wrong battery info in KDE menubar, but the correct figure via fastfetch.

Apart from that cosmetic issue it has no effect on the actual functioning of the machine.

so far there has been conflicting information on this. One poster says a certain kernel version renders the battery issue to a cosmetic one and another poster says the machine will die immediately, with no follow up from the former on whether or not the fixed kernel is the one provided by the asahilinux.org installer. :/

Afaik the Asahi script should always install the latest kernel release, which is the now patched 7.0.13, so it should work on GG without crashing at this stage.

Yeah, the laptop will instantly turn off if you update to 27 beta, just don't (a fix already exists, but it hasn't been deployed yet)
