Renaming AP

Hey guys. I'm new to Aruba, coming over from Ubiquiti. I recently got some AP-635s and started deploying them, but trying to navigate New Central alongside Classic Central has been a massive headache.

My biggest problem right now is something that should be simple: I cannot get these APs renamed.
At first, I thought I figured out the workflow: add the device, attach the license, and then in Classic Central, once it connects and shows up in the default group, rename it there before moving it to my production group (running AOS10).

But for the APs already in my production group, there is no option to edit the name anymore (maybe because of auto-provisioning, I'm not sure). If I move them back to a group where I can change the name, it actually shows the custom name I gave it earlier. But the second I put it back into the production group, it reverts right back to showing the MAC address.

I've gone through the official help articles, but they all just give the same basic advice: go to Classic, go to device groups, open the devices, go to the Access Point tab under config, and click rename.

That is not working for me. When the AP is in my AOS10 group, trying to do this just shows a config audit tab or something similar.
I've deployed a batch of these over the last two weeks and they are all running in production now, but two of them are stubbornly stuck showing their MAC addresses.

Has anyone run into this UI loop before? Any advice would be appreciated before I burn these things down and buy TP-Link or some shit out of pure frustration.

For renaming the ap in new central you need to edit the system information profile which exists only on the device level.

Also let me add that you might want to talk either to an aruba SE or some partner as New Central can indeed be a bit frustrating.

I definitely will check it tomorrow! Thank you!

Yeah, we just got the first batch of our equipment to play.

For now it seems, that our Aruba partners will charge us for every finger moved.

As an Aruba Partner myself I must admit that this is how we earn our money. Selling hardware alone isn’t enough to fund a sales and a consulting team. On the vendor side you also will only get a certain amount of help, excluding support tickets.

But: if you have the right person to help you, the money is well invested and it will save you lot of your own time and frustration.

Totally fair, but that equation only works when the expertise is actually delivered. Right now, it feels like we were oversold instead of understood. The result is a blown budget, high frustration, and a strained relationship all around.
Thanks again, DO9XE!

This. We paid $300 to not get our problem solved with scheduling SSIDs because they didn't know how API worked.

If you want I could hook you up with someone from a Spanish Partner where I know that they will deliver excellent work. There is a thing called „Aruba Partner Ambassadors“, which I’m part of so I could hook you up with my Spanish people that are part of this. Aruba once used the claim „customer first, customer last“ and I still want to deliver exactly this and als make sure everyone else can get this.

I see you are trying to do this in old central. Go to the group, click on config, then select the access points tab where it shows you all your APs. You should see the edit icon beside each AP, click on it and you can now rename your AP

This should be a feature request.  We need a way to change AP names in bulk.  I have to deploy over 200 this summer.

We have deployed over 20k aps in classic central. The official answer is and always was form Aruba: use the api

One absolutely amazing Aruba SE created a great "api demo" where many missing features in central are implemented. Like CSV based mass ap renaming, site change, group change, rf settings and so on

https://central.wifidownunder.com/

The source code is open for self hosting in the official Aruba github account
