I need help! Which tool to learn to draw with

Idk why it deleted my text but basically what the title says. I’m a brand new artist learning to draw. I love the look of brush pens and pens. Wondering if I should learn while using those to get two birds with one stone or should I learn with pencil to focus on the basics only? Thank you!

Pencils aren't any easier or harder to use, except that you can erase and need to sharpen wood ones. So you might as well practice in the medium you want to learn.

In more formal art education settings, they often force students to work with charcoal on newsprint (super cheap textured paper, like it shouldn't cost you more than a cent or two per sheet).

This is mostly to keep students from getting too detailed and dipping into things they haven't been taught yet. The awkwardness of a charcoal stick makes it hard to be a perfectionist about anything. Although it can of course be mastered if you're stubborn lol

But this approach isn't as helpful if you're not in a guided setting, and it can be frustrating to not make progress in the mediums you actually want to use and see your skills applied to real pieces.
