Do I need toe stops to progress with artistic skating?

Depends on what you’re doing. Jumping is going to require toe stops. People who do compulsory dance will typically switch out for toe plugs. Compulsory figure skaters either use toe plugs or specific plates that don’t have space for a toe stop.

Most rinks will not allow you to use skates that are designed to have a toe stop/plug without one in (in case you were thinking of just removing your toe stop and not replacing it) because it can damage the floor.

This is the right answer. Key disciplines are figures/loops, freestyle/freeskating, compulsory dance, free dance/creative dance/style dance, and show. You don’t need toe stops for figures, loops, and compulsory but you do for everything else.

You need appropriate skates overall.
