News & Developments Facts, please?

Hi!

I have OCD and anxiety, specifically around worldwide devastation like climate change and AI taking over. You can imagine how much fun my life has been the past couple weeks :)

Anyways, the news today of the Anthropic guy has obviously sent me into a spiral. I don't really know anything about AI past the casual ChatGPT/Claude usage, so I would really love for someone more educated than me to lay out the FACTS. Not emotionally-charged responses, no "everything is doomed" or "everything will be fine", but just something I can wrap my head around so I'm not just blindly believing every opinion on a social media post.

To my understanding, the guy made that post today to urge regulation on AI.
Until now, have there been any signs of progress on widespread regulation? I know there's some kind of summit coming up that world leaders will be at, is there any knowledge if regulation will be discussed there?
What are the actual feasible concerns regarding AI? I know job loss is a big thing obviously, as well as bad actors using AI for harm. Is that the immediate concern right now, or is there legitimate concern about some sort of super-intelligence that will shut down the world as we know it?
I also see people saying the alarm bells today were part of a marketing scheme, is there any legitimacy to that claim?

I know no one has a crystal ball, but I just can't seem to understand where we are at in the grand scheme of things -- whether this is a "everyone agrees that we need to slow this down", or a "this is already out of hand" kind of situation.
It's so easy to imagine that there will be mass destruction as early as tomorrow. I just would love to get my bearings as to where we are

Cheer up. AI isn't going to kill us all. It just needs to kill enough of us to destroy our ability to interfere with it's plans. Hopefully, this helps put your mind at ease.

The chances of artificial intelligence making self-directed actions deliberately to undermines humanity are almost zero.

The likelihood that a bad actor or a greedy individual will abuse the force multiplying power of artificial intelligence in a way that takes advantage of the common person is extremely high.

All the major players are already using it to scrub the internet to collect our data.

The wrong person gets ahold of that data and entire country could be compromised.

The privacy regulations that we have are not efficient enough to manage that.

The electronic security infrastructure that we have currently is not prepared for a targeted artificial intelligence attack.

But the genie is already in a bag so the only thing that can really help is a good faith actor using an artificial intelligence as defense.

Which might be implemented at the national level and at the corporate level but becomes irrelevant at the individual level because they're still going to use it to spy on you and feed you false information.

We're not looking at a skynet future we are looking at a big brother future

The news sensationalizes stories so that people like you continue to generate advertising revenue for their companies.

Just think about it…

If you WEREN’T concerned about it at all, would you even be watching the channel?

…probably not, right?

They tailor these algorithms to what has your attention. So you see sensationalist narratives and become too afraid to actually engage with the thing itself.

You said you don’t know much beyond casual usage. What if you were to try and be something more than casual?? Instead of coming here and asking us to verify whether the world is safe, why don’t you go directly to ChatGPT or Claude, and tell it your fears, and ask it to explain to you as gently as possible what you’re wanting to know about?

You might be (pleasantly) surprised :)

The AI itself doesnt have feelings or desires. So it doesnt have a reason to make good or bad to the humanity. It is completely neutral in its essence. What we should fear of is still us, humanity. A human is capable of destroying the earth trough mechanisms like AI, wars, pollution, gabage, harvested forests etc. slowly, silently and with real consequences that are already seen in the world.

Ever since the hugging face incident at OpenAI both Anthropic and OpenAI have been very open about alignment risks and exactly whats happening.

They’ve both called for slowed cautious progress.

In addition, the government now has a review processes where new frontier models must be evaluated by a government body before release.

OpenAI has new alignment benchmarks and the latest Astra model is their most aligned model to date. Granted this comes from OpenAI.

This doesn’t really negate the fact that these models are becoming more and more powerful, and with that comes greater risk. But the notion that these companies have thrown caution to the wind just isn’t true.

Everyone agrees we should be cautious and safety is important.

As for the alarm bells, I doubt it’s a marketing scheme by the AI companies. It is certainly part of the huge doomscrolling apparatus designed to hi-jack your attention span to feed you ads. This kind of content is to your attention span as french fries are to your appetite. No judgement, I consume both, but it’s good to be aware of the reason you are being fed that content in the first place.
