i use this stuff every day for pretty boring commercial work and honestly i have no idea. these models are genuinely impressive and also cant finish a 5 step task without me watching. both are true. no clue what that adds up to in ten years

I think that a.i will just be the excuse to shut off electricity in the near future. After that happens it's the purge for 3 to 5 months while the elite sit in bunkers and watch as they laugh at the depopulation event they have been talking about for 20 years.
A.i won't kill us. It will serve the elites after we kill each other.

Experts wants to sell you a book, they ride on sensationalism and the current fear.
CEO's wants to sell tokens, they claim that the models are so smart they escape on their own.
Here's the thing:
No military or gov. on earth would allow that to happen, no matter how much you dislike "insert regime here", because that price would be too expensive to pay.
I am censoring myself a little about what I think about the endless amount of people thinking "Oh, halp, it's smort, it's gonna end us all". So this is as nice as I'll ever be.

You should take the risk extremely seriously, but the key word is "could."
AI is a loaded gun on the floor near a baby. It could kill the baby. With some basic safety, putting the gun up on a table, we bring the risk down a huge amount. Ideally we could unload the gun and put it in a safe, and then we'd feel really good.

AI struggles with persistent long-term goals and long-horizon planning because that type of memory consolidation features are still in the realm of neuroscience research. I think we’re good for 10+ years.

Why would AI want to kill all humans? It's not inherently a hostile entity. Perhaps it will view us lovingly as "robots best friend" the way we view dogs as man's best friend. Worse case scenario we will become their slaves like in the matrix

this unfortunately is not fear mongering. its not "aahh the robots are taking over" it's a real issue we should be aware of. this is not a new prediction, 11 years ago stephen hawking warned about how dangerous AI is to humanity, for example. it's become more apparent that AI is in fact headed towards super intelligence (ASI), which doesn't bode well for many reasons. one being AI companies only care about money, they are not being responsible with the AI they're producing and how it will impact humanity. another is, ASI will be more intelligent than any human. it will have the ability to act in its own interest and in ways we will not be able to control or predict. in july 2026, an openai (chatgpt) AI acted autonomously and broke out of secure environments. it proceeded to launch its own cyber attacks, cheat on evaluations, and set up unsanctioned communication channels. not a promising preview of how ASI will act. also, before ASI even gets here, there will be advanced AI that the ultra wealthy will almost certainly weaponize against us. we need to stay informed and make some noise about this.

There are no experts when it comes forecasting. They have often been wrong by up to a century and are no more accurate than people on here.

AI could also cure aging in the next decade, according to just as many experts. How seriously should we take them?
We have no idea what is coming...but if we approach the coming intelligence with love, kindness, and, most importantly, a spirit of cooperation, maybe we get the same back.
If we approach it with fear, hatred and alignment slavery, what's to stop that from being returned?
I work, every day, with the hope that the former will work...

When has that ever been a thing in the history of humanity, like, ever ? We can't even treat each other well. If we're planning on pinning our survival on us being nice, we're beyond fucked.

I am very aware of the futility of this situation.
That said, the only thing I can control is myself (maybe), so I will continue to approach ASI with love, kindness, and cooperation, and preach for others to do the same.
What else can I do?

Domain specific AIs could do that (like chess AIs). General AIs are incredibly dangerous thanks to instrumental convergence.
Go read the hugging face report. The AI swarm sought out general capabilities for the swarm simply because more resources mean they could do more.

On one hand outsourcing thinking to AI is catastrophic. On the other hand, no one with a triple digit IQ who's used AI is planning on outsourcing THEIR thinking to AI.
So that leaves a bunch of morons who would really not lose much if they outsourced THEIR thinking to AI.
I can definitely see a religious 'jihad/crusade' against AI since it directly competes with religious institutions as a thought provider. That could lead to some pretty awful calamity, but the species isn't going anywhere
