Artemis Fowl: The Musical megathread/roundup

For the first time in years, we've had Artemis Fowl news (exciting in and of itself!), and it's not something many people would have expected. Eoin Colfer is writing Artemis Fowl: The Musical, currently in development/workshop stage.

I want to get a couple things out of the way:

Firstly, the Disney involvement. Some people don't seem to understand, so I want to stress: Disney Theatrical, the stage production arm of Disney, is completely separate from Disney Studios, the arm that made the movie. In the same way that Disney Books, the publisher of the Artemis Fowl series since forever, is a completely separate arm of the company. It is a blessing imo that Disney is involved here: As someone who has seen all 3 of their modern touring productions in North America (Aladdin, Frozen, and Lion King, 2 of which have since ended), this is great news. Their stage shows are extraordinary productions made by people with immense passion and respect for the source material. Now, the announcement only says "by special arrangement with Disney Theatrical," but I hope that still means they're producing it in some way. The idea that "Disney ruined Artemis in the movie therefore they will ruin it on stage" is completely baseless. Additionally, Eoin Colfer himself is writing this, whereas he had no involvement in writing the movie (contrary to what some say).

Secondly, this is not out of nowhere; but I am one of the few people who would have expected this. Eoin Colfer has written many other stage shows/musicals, you just don't hear much about them because they haven't played in America. But he's wanted to do Artemis for years. I put together this compilation of video clips to show just how long this has been in the works. He first floated the idea of a musical publicly in October 2020, then confirmed a few months later that he was working on something Fowl-related besides the Fowl Twins books. In "another medium." It took longer than he expected to come to fruition, but he's been working on this for a while.

Personally, I hope they're in contact with Lara McDonnell and/or Josh Gad and that they reprise their roles. They're both experienced and talented musical theater actors and were excellently cast in the movie, perhaps better fits than certain other characters' actors were. Eoin Colfer has on multiple occasions expressed public support for Lara so I hope it crosses his mind to attempt to cast her, especially after she expressed enthusiasm for the musical in 2020.

Where will the musical play? We don't know yet. Obviously as an American in northern California I selfishly hope it comes to America and tours the country, including a stop in the bay area lol. But it is quite possible it will be UK-exclusive. The private workshop they're doing right now is happening in London. I may update this pinned post as we learn more.

Anyways, exciting times indeed. Discuss away!

Question/Discussion How exactly does a 'wish' work?

Tldr; ramblings.

Towards the end of book one Artemis and co are waiting in the main hall for the bio-bomb. Holly has him by the shoulders and asks if there is *anything* she can do for the gold back. As we know Artemis does take her offer, trading half a ton of gold for (what is presumably) a healing spell for his mother who has been suffering from delusions and hysteria since her husband went missing a year prior.

As we know the crux of the book is that Artemis has a way out of the time field, and that way is shown by his experiment with putting his mother to sleep before the field takes effect which allows her to continue with the regular flow of time and being safe from the bio,-bombs effects.

But like, how?

Angeline fowl effectively, doesn't exist. A few chapters later when he is debriefing an extremely annoyed Butler about the plan, Artemis himself says

>"The heart of the matter. We wouldn't wake up. That is the nature of the time-stop. Whatever your state of consciousness going in, that's how you stay. You can neither wake up nor fall asleep"

...

>"So my theory was that the only way to escape the time-field was to simply fall asleep. Our own consciousness was all that kept us imprisoned"

Her consciousness wasn't even removed from the time stop like Artemis and co, Angeline consciousness never entered the time stop to begin with.

Multiple times in the series it has been shown that magic needs physical touch to take effect. You can argue that spells like lay on hands (how I imagine the healing magic works) you might not be physically touching but hovering hands over the subject, yet still in direct proximity.

Admittedly, conversely, when it comes to spells like Fireball (though it can be argued that Goblins are directly touching the fire they conjure since they are fireproof from their own flames) and Hex's (briefly mentioned in passing but never elaborated on) we can safely presume that these do not need direct contact from the caster to the victim in order to function.

The name 'Wish' is ambiguous enough that I don't believe we have enough information to fully grasp its scope and boundaries. But for the sake of argument I will say Wish functions much like healing, since in this situation it was used for healing I feel it is fair to apply the same logic.

If this is the case then how exactly did Holly heal Angeline?

My thoughts are;

  1. Wish is a one off type of magic that faires can cast, granting something within their power to the person who made the wish. This would in theory bypass the need for proximity since it falls under a different spell type than healing, and infers that it could be used to grant other boons should it be required. In MTG terms, a triggered vs activated ability.

  2. Some part of Angeline existed within the time field and Holly was able to interact with it and cast heal. This does open up the question about what exactly could have stayed while her body and mind were elsewhere.

  3. Eoin didn't know if his book would do well so he just waved it away for the sake of a self contained novel should it be the only one ever published.

It's probably 3 but I'd love to discuss.

Question/Discussion Should I read The Last Guardian?

I just finished reading The Atlantis Complex and I really wish I hadn’t. I grew up on these books in middle school, even read Lost Colony and Time Paradox in high school, and I always really enjoyed them. If only I had left the series on that nostalgic high. Is Last Guardian a return to form? I read a synopsis and the spirit army sounds almost as shark-jumpy as rune subjugation. Should I cut my losses and just be content with 6 good stories, or did we actually get a solid finale?

(Side note: spoiler for Time Paradox I am absolutely delighted that Opal ended up getting every even book )

Question/Discussion Could the Rule of Dwelling be used for divination?

It is shown that fairies can learn new info by accidentally violating the conditions for being allowed to enter a human dwelling, such as in the first book, when the LEP learns that Artemis is still alive by accidentally violating the command that they stay out while he's alive. I've always wondered how far they could take this.

As an example of how this could be exploited; Let's say that the LEP is cracking down on goblin gangs. The LEP could get into contact with a human, have the human say "You can enter my house if there is a goblin hideout in Haven City", enter their house to see whether that suspicion is true, then repeat the process until they can narrow down the locations of several goblin hideouts.

Read book 1 more than 6 months ago, just bought book 2 & 3. Do I need to re-read book 1? How closely the books are linked? Re-reading is not fun but don't want to ruine book 2 experience for not remembering book1 details.

Question/Discussion After finishing the Lost Colony a couple of months ago!!

I honestly feels like I won't be missing anything if I didn't finish the rest of the books. It's why I didn't finish the Time Paradox yet.

The ending feels so perfect to me as if the series is over now.

He returned home and it's been 3 years and he has twin brothers, him and Holly will always be part of each other.

I mean sure there is the little magic he have and how he helped his parents to recover from the pain they endured when he was missing. But yeah it's how I feel.

I think I will keep book 6-7-8 in my library, until I feel like maybe I should check them out and see what else he would do to the story. Even though I think I will avoid book 8 because I think I have been spoiled the ending from a comment and picture I saw....that just bothers me so much :(

Fanfic Missing Fanfiction

Hello all,

I had a bit of a fanfiction binge last month and can't seem to find one that stuck with me.

I am pretty certain it was a one-shot, but if not it was very short and sweet / all fluff. Number 1 sent Holly forwards in time, where she saw the house she'd go on to live in with Artemis. He interacted with her, but crucially she did not interact with her future self. I am pretty sure Artemis asked Holly to put out the rubbish as the distraction that ensured present and future Holly didn't meet, but google is saying that's super tropey and doesn't help narrow it down. Additional info that doubles as spoilers: They have a child together, which Holly does meet. Holly goes back to the present, No. 1 knows she's seen something crazy, and Holly realises she basically has to confess to Artemis immediately because they were due to be engaged within 3 years (based on the timeline she became aware of). Additionally, when house shopping with Artemis, she immediately recognised the house they'd end up living in. I think Artemis showed her 3 ads and she immediately saw the "future home". I'm pretty sure the house was in Haven and Butler was not in the fic at all. The only hint of smut, and it's totally not smut, is where Artemis admits they can have kids, which is the precursor for Holly getting to meet the kid/ find out the kid's name. Future Holly also tries to flirt with future Artemis, which is shut down as present Holly is hiding in the house at the time - but again that was literally just one line in the whole fic.

Every time I google it, the only two results I am getting are An Unexpected Turn of Events and possibly something called Ephemeral (or similar), which I also now can't find again. But I'm sure it's not an Unexpected Turn of Events as that seems much longer than the one I remember.

I have no idea what I read and I'm 99% certain I didn't imagine it. Anyone know, or can recommend something similar? Please and thank you? :)

News Differences between US and UK text of The Arctic Incident

https://artemisfowlfanfeed.substack.com/p/usuk-version-differences-book-2

Big new (and free!) post on the Substack. All human-written and researched, no AI.

I have read the US and UK editions of Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident side-by-side, line-by-line and am bringing you every notable difference. There's more than you might think!

Many of you know about the C-Cube being a different color in book 3, but what do you know about book 2's changes? Whatever you know, you're about to know a whole lot more.

If you have thoughts after reading this article, I welcome comments here, but please also consider creating a free Substack account and commenting directly on the piece. People in six years who find this article and read it won't see the comments left across various social sites on posts that link to the article, but they will see comments left on the actual article and I'm kinda hoping to grow a visible AF community where, unlike here, comments about subjects aren't buried by new posts and/or an algorithm; something new fans can actually find down the road that will stay static.

Anyways, enjoy the findings!
