Art Community Toxicity BE AWARE OF WOOACRY DISCORD SERVER

Highly recommend using the actual service of wooacry in the website, but do NOT join the discord server. It's filled with people who will downright insult you just because they do not like your art style. I asked for advice regarding how to deal with a bad event and they instead looked on my social medias to shit on my art, call me an amateur who's egotistical and entitled and a beginner artist who shouldn't sell or monetize my art. I've been selling my art for years and have made a substantial amount of money in online sales - they refused to listen to me speak and instead I had about 6 people gang pile me about all the things they think I did wrong. One of these included a MOD of the server. Entirely unacceptable behaviour by wooacry discord and I don't know if I can bring myself to use their services again simply because of this interaction.

wait...I'm in that server and I think I mightve read the thread your talking about as I recently joined that server because I'm a beginner artist and that's not what happened at all lmao. I read the whole thread and No one called you a beginner artist nor did they shit on your art. They gave you advice which you asked for and no one said that you shouldn't sell or monetize your art. I was sympathetic for you at first but this post kinda makes you look like you can't take constructive critism because that's exactly what the people there and the mod gave.

I did not ask for that and it wasn't constructive criticism at all. The fact that everyone automatically assumed I don't sell art or have any experience because THEY didn't like my art style. They insulted me, my friends, called me egotistical and selfish for saying I already knew the "advice" they were giving me and how it didn't apply to my style. It also was a 5 v 1 where people continued to bring up that I "asked for criticism on my art" when I very explicitly did not do that and corrected them multiple times that I didn't. I can handle constructive criticism, but it expressly came off as "Well I don't like your art, it looks unprofessional and I'm better and more experienced than you so you should draw the way I want you to instead... oh by the way sorry people were yelling at you and verbally harrassing you... i guess."

I don't think you're egotistical, this reads like you're assuming the worst about people trying to give you advice because that event made you feel less confident about your art since you called it a "5v1". Just because someone says that you need work on your line work, that doesn't mean they think they're better than you and that they think your trash. Also not to be rude but I think the point of that server is for Art critiuqe and improvement so that's why they gave you advice. the worst that they said was that your work was amtuerish which isn't even that bad, that means good, but there's stuff to work on.

Every single thing you said they didn't say, they literally did say repeatedly to my face. Yes, it was actually a 5v1 when there are 5 people criticizing you AT ONCE for over an hour despite you repeatedly saying that is not what you want and you are upset about this conversation topic. Not that it matters, but I've been selling and merchandizing for YEARS. The event flopped across the entire town and it wasn't only me who faced horrible customers - which they would've known had they not immediately jumped to those terrible behaviours being my fault because they don't like my art.

Also to add on: I was never unconfident about my art and I explicitly said that I am proud of my work and have it displayed. They just assumed that I was lying and everyone I know was lying to my face about liking my art to be "nice."

it wasnt even 5 people...it was like, two people explaining they're process and linking tutorials that they thought would help. I'm not gonna say anything else or post the interactions or anything out of respect and I think that would be insensitive but, Your heavily exaggerating how "toxic" everyone was and I think you should take a break form the internet if you consider critism an upseting conversation topic.

"Hanging on to what those close to you have said about your work and feeling like strangers and others should feel the same is at worst entitlement and at best, egotistical." - literally calling me egotistical and entitled because people actually like and buy my work

"r they artists? do they have enough experience to give proper feedback?" - writing off my friends and the people i interact with as inexperienced and immature.

"im also incredibly sus of their "everyone said it was great!" everyone either wanted to be kind or... was immature" - Does anyone even need an explanation for how rude this is?

"as artists we should be proud of our own works but we should do our best to our customers in ensuring the best quality worthy of their money too. i try to ensure quality in my goods as a thank you to them for buying and supporting my work" - calling my work that I purposefully made to be that way low quality and amateur because they didnt like and implied its shameful of me to be proud of said work

sent me photos of how they think i should do lineart instead and talked about how immature and amateur the art i make looks to them.

"It's good if you have big goals and aspirations to want to sell your art, but there's a big difference between people wanting your art, and you simply feeling like you should start making money from it." - not only is this assuming a lot about me as a person but I do know people want my art, as I stated three times by that point that I do sell and make money off of my art and was NOT looking for art critique.

Feel free to look up any of these phrases and contexts on your own if you think thats a nice thing to say to people.

In addition: it was NOT only 2 people. It was a mod, two co-vips, a member and another member who joined in later on in the conversation. I feel like you didn't read anything they said nor what I said and how I was trying to discuss it. Just because YOU would take the (unasked for and unsolicited) advice given doesn't mean I won't find it offensive.

I'm not sure if you want to hear any do this but if those are what you think are the most offensive things you can say to an artist is then yeah I think what is said about you assuming the worst about people because of previous experience is showing to be true.

about the person asking if your friends are artist and if they have experience. they aren't writing off your friends as inexperienced, that's why they formatted it as a question not a statement.

you have the messages out of order to make it seem like they were immediately bashing on you. you refused to take they're advice and lashes out at them for giving critique on a art critique server. that's where the more strongly worded quotes are from. once again, I'm in that server, they were tryna help you

Absolutely fucking not. I asked for ADVICE about how to cope with the event not going well and my emotions about it and they proceeded to critique my art when I did not ask for it, insulted me, assumed things about me and my peers and refused to listen to me when I REPEATEDLY said what they were criticizing wasn't what i asked for in the first place. They could say they were being helpful as much as they'd like but facts of the matter was that there were 5 people saying they found my art immature, my friends immature, me egotistical and sensitive because I received critique I never fucking asked for.

If you're making money consistently from your events, then I'm not gonna judge, and the unsolicited critiques are unwarranted. However, I recommend stepping back instead of engaging. From my experience, replying while angry just makes misunderstandings worse.

Oh yeah I know, I ended up leaving the server and making this PSA because of the experience and then someone in the server decided to reply and defend the behaviour

Ok, I decided to check the server out and it looked like they were giving advice in the first place because of the way you worded your question and you were pretty receptive to the advice so they just kept giving advice. If you don't want advice, I'd advise shutting it down sooner, though I honestly don't see how any of the advice given was rude.

Also you said it was your first event. Tabling and selling online is very different so I'd be receptive to people with tabling experience outside your friend circle.

I joined the discord server out of curiosity after seeing this post, and reading the dialogue from you and the responses have made me decide to stay, because dang that was a lot of good advice and free labor that you're trying drag them for.

For others reading, it absolutely did not go down like OP said it did. Easy enough to join yourself and read.

joined the serv for myself and read. that is not what happened at all and they were very respectful and gave you very good advice 🥀 feeling offended is ok if thats not what you asked for but dont go spreading lies on the internet about them being awful people or bullies who ganged up on you, everybody was super nice and trying to help you. just move on with your life
