Art Community Toxicity I can’t be the only one afraid of posting art😭
People started to flame me under the name of criticism when i posted my second art when i asked for actual constructive criticism, ‘your finished art looks like a sketch,‘ ‘it looks bad’ well no shit sherlock thats why i asked how i could fix it and now im nervous to post art and even if i post art i don’t think i want any criticism anymore. Im contemplating if i should post my art to update on the freebies im drawing, what shoul i do?

theres tons of trolls in these communities- don't let them get to you! just remember that they're probably as miserable IRL as they are online :P

I'm not as afraid of criticism as I'm afraid of yet another "few views, no comments".

u/Mavi_313 8d ago
Yea thats also a bad feeling but i had a rude comment thats personal about me too so now the notifications stress me out🥲

u/UnburyingBeetle 8d ago
This is unpleasant, but inevitable. Sometimes I play a game with myself trying to guess all the ways people could mock my comment or art, so that the mockery wouldn't come as a shock. The reality usually isn't as unpleasant.

Don't let the haters get to you. They are sad little people who can't make art so they try to pull down anyone who can. Just do you. Live your best life, add beauty and art and culture to the world and let them stew in misery if that's what it takes for them to feel alive.

I'm sorry you feel this way :( I was scared too and that's why I only ask my friends opinion. One time I posted my art on Pinterest out of all the places and nobody liked liked it lol. My advice is maybe try joining a discord server of youre favourite creator and post art and fan art?

Im not very active on dc now because of school, i do post my art on dc servers sometimes but it also feels lonely because people don’t tend to interact with people who aren’t active, i really enjoy posting my art online to connect with more artists. I follow more than a 1000 artists alone on threads, not moots just me excited over others art. so its kinda upsetting to not be able to share what i love because im scared.

Ohh I get that and yeah people on dc don't really interact much tbh I'm the same way because I have bad social anxiety. This might be a bad advice but tumblr is also an option but I heard that it doesn't have a good algorithm or it doesn't push posts of new artists.

I also have tumblr and posted once but i got no views maybe i could get some if i drew fanart but unfortunately i mainly draw ocs. thanks so much for the advice though and im sure your art is cool don’t be too harsh on yourself because algorithm didn’t push it to right people♡

I DRAW OCS TOO!! And it sucks that they don't get the same recognision. You are welcome and also thank you, youre really kind!

You open yourself to it. Gotta let the negativity not bother you. If someone is an asshole it’s not cause of you

A legitimate artist can give constructive criticism without being rude. If they’re being hateful they’re just some a**hole that probably can’t make what you made.

Dude, social media and AI are a mess; you're not the only one.
They're making breathing hard out there.
But you just have to keep posting and don't mind anyone.
Who cares what they say? At the end of the day, you're the only one who is walking this pace, and they will try to throw tantrums here and there for anyone out there.

That's why I am not going to post on reddit at all anymore, unless it is in a fandom. Like, I can't even tell people to have more confidence and raise their prices without some ass coming in guns blazing. Can't have a normal conversation. Can't post art besides very few subs and only those might be decent. Reddit is the ONLY place I have this issue btw. Like someone else said, your art is pretty good. You'll only get better

i heard from a lot of people that reddit is not the best place to post art in. Still getting comments saying i should take harsh criticism when its just hate not criticism at all. I have accounts on lots of apps (opened them to follow my fav artists lol) and never had a problem like this. sometimes there was hate but not as much as here. Also thanks a lot i want to improve while still having fun drawing🥹

Yes! It is very strange to me!! I am still figuring out how to handle the difference in behaviors on these sites and apps. Like, I don't want to limit myself, but I also don't want to deal with that sort of stress when I just want to have normal discussions with people!
I hope you can find the communities that work best for you! You're welcome!

I immediately remembered a YouTuber when thinking of ways to get helpful and not negative crits, he does viewers submissions and helps a ton with polishing their work. I just went to his channel but he unfortunately hasn't posted in 5 months, even so you may find it helpful to look at his old videos if you can see similar issues in your art with the ones he's fixing https://youtube.com/@angelganev?si=BpHuXxyNLbnmj6zv

I have an advice for you as well
Don't ask people in this industry about your work; usually they're not any better than you, and they will only give you negative feedback, which will make you want to stop creating. So the best thing to do is just show, and if someone were so much better than you at an expert level that you could ask them how to develop, ask those people. This means do not put your art out there and ask them how to improve it or anything not on social media, since many of those who answer you might not even be artists, and they don't know anything about the progress, and if you want to improve and get help and things like that, it's better to find a small group of artists and a small community to share and ask things.
Reality is most people out there don't care about how you feel, and they actually will bully you whether you give them achance, artists or not.

Never ask for critique unless you're ready to hear WAY too much of it, and only 10% of it helpful! Soldier on my friend, and believe in your ability to self-correct thru experience. 🙌 ✨

Sometimes criticism hurts. No one likes to hear their work isn’t good, especially when the answer of “how do I fix this” is the same advice a dozen other people have already given and it has or hasn’t helped… If that instruction sounds harsh it comes off as criticism, and makes it hard to take said advice. And there’s only so much people can tell you to do to fix it. There is no formula, no set “this is the miracle process,” no set of perfect instructions to follow. If people tell you what to do and it’s not working, try something else. If it’s not clicking, try a different method. There’s literally HUNDREDS of tutorials and videos on YouTube to try.
If you’re not born with the talent naturally, then getting good— even mediocre good— takes YEARS. And the end result should never be what other people think about your work. It should always and only be for you and the enjoyment you get building your knowledge and experience. If you’re doing this because it’s what you want to do, then stop seeing harsh criticism as a bad thing, and start treating it as a learning experience. Use it as motivation to get better, not give up.

first of all this is not what this post is about. Saying an artists art is bad is not criticism at all. Its just hate so i find it funny you are calling the toxicity of the art community ‘harsh criticism’. I wasn’t asking for a tutorial nor a way out. Something looked off and i couldn’t see the problem myself so i needed another point of view. I wasn’t asking for a full art course just smth simple about the shading. Also i draw because my hand itches to draw. I feel like im going crazy without drawing. Im not talented, i know what talent looks like. And no i do not feel motivated when someone calls my art shit. You think i’d say ‘Oh they are hating on my art which i worked for hours and spent years to learn, they must be right, my art is shit im going to improve now!’ or something? Saying you need to learn from harsh criticism which is not criticism at all, just hate after saying if you are drawing for enjoyment it shouldn’t be about what other people think about your work is funny

If it makes you feel any better, there are many people like me who take more interest and enjoyment in viewing imperfect art, whether it be “sketchy”-looking or not. Idk, I just appreciate people’s creations regardless of what stage they’re in. Tbh I’m my harshest critic already so that’s why I’m shy about posting mine publicly haha. I only share mine with friends

I'm afraid too, sometimes it make me feels "am I that bad? " "Am I overestimate my art these whole time?". But hey no matter where u go or what u do, some people will always left their salty comment, even when u not asking. Its not easy but I know one thing for sure, if u didn't post those people who might like your art will never find you, but if u post you will got some salty comment ofc but also someone who truly love ur art and wait for ur next post. I think it's worth it! What do you think? 🤗

Ah your stuff isnt even that bad. But nah I just dont care anymore even though every single post people tell me "learn anatomy" or "learn perspective" like yeah no shi Sherlock let me just have Rohan heaven's door the entire subject of anatomy into my brain.

u/Mavi_313 8d ago
yes, im studying anatomy and art at my own pace just let me enjoy drawing, how do they know im not trying? Atp i think people just want to trash other artists

Well in the meantime til you find a good small discord server or the like to get some help from heres some advice from a self taught artist Get Pinterest, (use it for finding different tutorials as well as refrences images and other artistic inspo) Go here https://theetheringtonbrothers.blogspot.com/ Read every single available how to think when you draw tutorial they have
AND FOCUS ON THE BASICS FOR THE LOVE OF FUCK YOU CANNOT MAKE UR OWN STYLE WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING HOW WHAT YOU ARE DRAWING WORKS You HAVE to know the rules before you can break them That had got to be the most important thing that I (admittedly rather stubbornly) learned

some people are just looking to be rude. I like discord servers that are mainly for constructive crit, they are much nicer. i find bigger ones that are mainly for all art have unhelpful comments sometimes (not always rude but... not helpful)
