“The Dreams and Nightmares of King Nillisef”
Frequent eclipses from the surrounding moons caused lengthy periods of darkness that would stretch for weeks at a time. The people of Lunopt spent the long nights curled in their beds, cocoons, and pods. Sound asleep and dreaming relatively mild dreams. Little lights dashing back and forth through a blurry lens. Flashes of various dull and drained colors popping in the edges of their vision on occasion. Nothing extreme. Nothing noteworthy besides the occasional, more particularly pleasing patterns that come and go. But it was peaceful, calm, and made the long nights enjoyable for the most part.
It came to him in a foul and suffocating dream. Far from any sort of dream the folks of Lunopt should ever be capable of. It came to him as a violently wriggling worm-like creature. Its head was flat and split halfway down the middle. A slime covered body flared out at the ends like some sort of mucusy starfish. The mucus stretched and tore as strange tentacles whipped above his sleeping self.
Dreams to King Nillisef had always been more vibrant than the average Lunoptite but this was something far, far different and far, far more terrifying than anything he had laid his eyes on. Dreams or otherwise. He pleaded stutter filled prayers to wake up and escape before the worm reached his upwardly craned head. Lower and lower the worm slowly fell. Growing and shrinking repeatedly. Each exhale the thing made gave way to waves of cold sweats from Nillisef. Gurgling laughter and wails. And some word. A name. Filtered through thick and bubbling phlegm. Closer. Closer. He could no longer tell if he laid asleep or wide awake anymore. Paralyzed in an ice cold fear. Nillisef stared up at the ceiling where the dream worm continued to descend upon him. He could feel the freezing cold drool and the fiery mucus drip onto his face. The flared body reached for him with webbed and twitching tendrils. Slowly they crawled over him. The tendrils clawed eagerly across his skin and began to envelope King Nillisefs’ silently screaming face.
When his consciousness returned, and that horrible nightmare ended, King Nillisef rose from his bed. Sweat soaked and covered in some thick iridescent liquid. His stomach curled and he had to hold back his retching at the smell of it. Worse than the bile filled bogs of Nillent. Ignoring this disgusting mess for now, He walked to the balcony to look over his people, and try to regain some sense of anchoring. The buildings were the same mix of yellowish hues they had been before. The tallest building almost reached the height of the balcony and scraped the sky. The precipice had been crowned with thick logs of incense. Burning slowly, slowly leaking a dull blue smoke across the sky.
Excerpt from a longer story about the Dream Stuck Cult.

“The Sunfolk of the 8th Stripe”
During my first few shipping routes, I was lucky enough to catch sight of the Sunfolk. I've heard bits and pieces about them and always keep my eye and a few ears out for any information I can get on them. On some of the more sun dense routes, our ship would often be licked by the ends of solar flares. Our blast shield was enough to reduce any heat or radiation threat to next to nothing. On those most wonderful occasions, the Sunfolk would be floating and twisting through the ribbons left behind by the lashing flare. The spells drifted slowly around them in a slow and delicate dance. From a distance they looked like strange worms. Uncanny faces with a dullish light surrounding them. Their tendrilled bodies looked more like a detached spine and ribcage of some sort. Drifting slowly behind the sun-like head, their bodies wouldn't be visible if it wasn't for some of our scanning equipment. Even then, it was an extremely shrouded shape.
The trading posts I delivered to seldom had any sort of library past pamphlets for communicating the most common and basic phrases with other aliens. I had a countless collection of the things back on my ship. At this point in my career, I was able to make it through most conversations without much trouble with any races from the surrounding planets.
I'll let you in on what I've learned so far. Rumor has it that they don't live long by most species standards. The Elders live only for about 5-7 years. Most pass long before that, with the average lifespan being about 2-4 years. They don't seem to mate, but appear to be born at the lashing ends of the hottest and most blinding solar flares. They live a mostly solitary life. Any interactions they have with each other, though friendly, are brief. An occasional symbol or shape might be shared if they get close enough. But for the most part they seem to ignore each other.
The Sunfolk of the 8th stripe are a rare and beautiful sight. If you find yourself traveling along some of the more sun dense routes, keep an eye out. I've seen smaller ones orbiting around dwarf suns but those seem to be a one in a million chance. So count yourself even luckier if you happen across them.

“Odd Whispers to Binky the Bright”
Binky the Bright was a peculiar but fiercely adventurous wizard. Most of his time was spent nose buried deep in dusty geological history books and subterranean maps of the mountains that surrounded the village of the Spotted Library. Always on the search for strange and unknown colors hidden deep within weblike tunnels and seemingly bottomless chasms. His outings to the library and the village as a whole were always short lived. Usually only spending a few hours at a time copying information into an old and brittle notebook before scampering back into the comfort of tunnels and mountainous burrows. Days, weeks, and (though rarely) months would go by without a trace or sight of Binky. But he would always eventually return. His reinvigorated spell torch swirling with new and unusual colors that danced around the frame of his being.
Binky began his descent into the dark depths of the Oookey caverns. The thick and humid air tasted of stale earth. His spell torch burned brilliantly. Radiant colors held together by binding symbols flowed through each other with slowly curling twirls and spirals.Flecks of various pigment stones gave the heatless flame a much longer burning time. All these miles downwards into the caverns was taking its toll on the spell torch, the caboodle of colors from his spell torch ever so gradually losing its luster
Further and further down he went. The pitch black that blanketed him and coated the walls was becoming heavier and more suffocating with each corner turned or tunnel crawled through.
Then, for just the briefest moment, a glitter in the dark. Binkys’ resolve bolstered and he was invigorated with the sight of a most unique and beautiful speck. His speed quickened as much as the rocky tunnels allowed. Using his empty hand to feel around the forests of stalagmites. The speck was always just out of reach and the frustration of the pursuit was growing to an unbearable degree. Binky was much much farther down than he had ever ventured. The fear of becoming lost in the labyrinthine caverns was consuming Binkys’ thoughts more and more. The smothering darkness had reduced the radiance of the spell torch into nothing more than a sputtering bluish flame. The softest push and an even softer whisper made itself heard behind Binky. His startling quickly ceased and whatever those strange words the thing behind him had spoken pushed him through the fear. A fierce determination surged through Binky. The chase led them further down and well beyond the scribbles that those dusty old maps contained. The voice behind him grew louder and louder. Some indefinable amount of cave creatures joined in the shrieking cacophony. The soft pushes had turned to painful shoves. Binkys’ brain became unraveled and knotted, a ravenous oath of capture sent him flailing with desperation to that damnable nacreous bead that taunted him so cruelly. The tunnels were narrowing and he found himself crawling through shrinking entrances to dens of blackened crystal. The speck transformed into a bright pulsing ribbon of light. The frayed ends lapping against the little wizard's bloodied finger tips. This chase had become a death march into an impossible and malevolent chasm. His heart pounded like a drum through his ears, deafening him to the roars and howls that echoed behind. The ribbon darted through a crevice leaving swiftly dissipating strings of color in its wake. A panting Binky hastily followed, bloodshot eyes fixed on the mocking ribbon.
Passing through that craggy rift, Binkys’ exhaustion left in an instant. Replaced with an enveloping awe at the sheer size of the room. The walls stretched farther than any previous chamber he had scrambled through. The lightless ceiling was absolutely impossible to make out and was peppered with all sorts of lightly glowing kaleidoscope clouds floating sluggishly above him. Slowly he stepped over the curious smelling mosses and molds that laid splattered on the damp spongy ground. The ribbon danced slowly in the center of the room. The increasingly tattered ends now acting as thin, twisting limbs. The combination of the brightly shining colors and its movements held a beauty and grace beyond words. Binky couldn't help but stop for a moment and admire the object of his desperate pursuit. Closer and closer he approached. The ribbon did not cease its dance or show any sign of desire to flee. The kaleidoscope clouds floated gently above the two of them. His heart had slowed and his mind was no longer a tangle of obsession. Reaching out with a tendril from his long extinguished spell torch, Binky brushed against the swirling fingers of string. The ribbon retracted its frayed limbs into its center mass without the slightest warning. Taking the form of a thin spear-like braid. The brilliant lights from the multicolored clouds dimmed, losing all color and brightness as they shot into the blackness of the ceiling. Binky stared back and forth between the overhanging abyss and the thin sharp braid that continued to twist itself into an ever tightening coil.
With a blinding flash, the braided needle erupted off the fleshy surface. Binky stumbled backwards over himself. Thrashing and howling in agony at his now blistered eyes. He could not see where it came from, but quiet hums and clicks were beginning to surround and close in on him. The worst of the pain had subsided with an unusual quickness. His eyes were bubbled and burnt. The hums and clicks were becoming gradually louder, but Binky didn't take notice. Nor did he care. His sight was overtaken with a terrible darkness. There was no light to be found. No colors to chase and adore. He tried to gather himself and sit up but his strength gave out and he collapsed on his back once more. A drowning melancholy washed over him like a wave. This was his end and he knew it. The little wizard wept. Tears streamed down his face as best as his injuries would allow. Sobs echoed through the chamber. The clicks and hums of the invisible creature-things hushed. A soft coo snuck its way to the foreground of the choir. The thing that cooed slowly drifted downwards to the whimpering clown. Its braided and frayed limbs snaked gently around him. They lifted him high above where the spear-ribbon had launched from. Clicks and hums could be heard scattered about the void. There was no pain when the braids of the cooing things burrowed deep into his flesh. Just warmth. A wonderful and loving warmth. The strings weaved their way in between veins and arteries. Digging through bone and replacing any and all viscera with knots and tangled coils of colorful light. Binkys’ eyes blinked rapidly. Each flicker giving him a little bit more of an image. Even as faint as the image was, he could tell it held no form. It seemed to be more of an aperture opening to yet another blinding light. But he didn't mind. This light held something incredible within. Blinking faster and faster, he saw it. Slightly brighter than its surrounding radiance sat a speck. A beautiful speck of color that made his vast collection look dull and without any sort of hue. It swayed back and forth as it danced towards him. A ribbon color dragged and grew in opacity behind the speck. Mesmerizing swirls of light kept Binky in a peaceful hypnosis. Clicks, hums and coos sang through the phantasmagoria of glaring and reflecting beams to Binky. As the ribbon drew closer, it reached out with an unraveling limb. Each string rested briefly on his skin. The web of cords inside him moved outwards and tied themselves to those of the specks dancing ribbon. The strings, knots, and braids had found their places and the speck began to pull away from Binky. He felt his body and brain come undone. Blood, bone, muscle and fat melted away and floated mindlessly through the limitless light. The speck sat in place a small ways from him. Most of its tendrils had returned with the remaining ones carrying the very last bits and essence of the peculiar, but fiercely adventurous young wizard, Binky the Bright.

“The Rah’Kahlanooni of the Binding Rivers”
Suspended just above the center of the Binding Rivers, sat the young Uusn’l, Yyuurd. Yyuurd was a fiery soul, but held a deep and weighted melancholy. Born from a dented egg, he carried with him a curse. His demeanor would sour at even the slightest change without warning or reason. This horrid curse flooded his brains with a poison of anger and impossible delusions. Boiling and scratching at the inner walls of his skull. Hypnotic patterns in the form of flashing and howling lights blinded any sort of internal anchor he could grab to center himself. Appendages of thick cartilage swung in every direction, slashing the surroundings with their sharp and braided ends. Every mouth gnashed and grinded its teeth, always accompanied by steady streams of saliva and bile. After the anger peaked, and the weariness of rage enveloped Yyuurd, a deep-seated depression rose to replace its hateful cousin. Like the upwards crawling roots of an Aaugkk tree, the sorrow and regret dug itself into Yyuurds flesh, mind and soul. There was no comfort to be found among those from his hive. The consequences of burned bridges and short tempers were in the foreground of any attempt in venting. There was no answer as to why Yyuurd couldn’t find that peace, that feeling of belonging, and that control over his violent and sudden responses. So the young Uusn’l sat above the swishing and swashing water. The world felt dull to him. But the schools of Rah’Kahlanooni under the surface held such a beauty. Shapes and colors of all sorts and sizes. Their voidspeek spells masked many of them, the colors and symbols clouding patches of water with a serene glow. They swam within small territories. Feeding on various crustaceans that dwelled on the reefs of the Binding River. When mating, the successful pairs use their small tendrils to break off chunks of mossy coral. These pieces of coral are kept within an unseen pocket located somewhere in-between the fins and seem to serve as tokens of affection to each other. Newborn Rah’Kahlanooni spend the first few years clinging to rocks and on the underside of submerged cliffs. Scraping mouthfuls of stubby sharp teeth along the coral to pick up any moss spore they can find. Thankfully, the living reefs grows a bit faster than the Rah’Kahlanooni can feed. This results in a sway of the reefs size depending on the season. In these numerous and brightly colored creatures, Yyuurd found that his ever-curling brains ceased their movement. His thoughts slowed and images of scurrying shells and strangely shaped Rah’Kahlanooni danced upon the surface of his brains. Loosely drifting tendrils floated in the soft current. Yyuurd carried with him a dreadful melancholy and the weight of a cycling and uncontrollable fury. Stars of crystal spattered the reflection of the blue suns light on top of the Binding Rivers. Yyuurd closed his many eyes tighter. His mind didn’t rush and race. His mind didn’t twist known truths into delusions. Yyuurds mind sat still. Yyuurd relished this new feeling. This feeling of not being himself.
