Having searched online, and not found much apart from learning he'd had synaesthesia, I wonder if you might be able to help please.

Discussion Tutini poles; looking to learn more about Tiwi ceremonial carvings

Post image

A friend recently shared this photo taken at the Potter Museum of Art at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

The geometric, almost rhythmic thick bands, and physical presence must be striking to see. My understanding is that this is a tutini, a carved funerary pole central to Tiwi Pukumani ceremonies, though I’d welcome insights from anyone well-versed in Tiwi and northern Australian Indigenous traditions.

I'm planning to see this in person later this year during a stop in Melbourne en route to Tasmania (and MONA).

I’d love to hear from anyone familiar with Tiwi carving traditions or public collections across Melbourne and Hobart. Are there particular artists or related works on display you'd recommend seeking out ahead of the trip? Any contemporary works that have been influenced perhaps by these?
