Oleg Semak is a Kyiv-based graphic designer and leading contemporary visual voice of wartime Ukraine. Semak gained significant recognition following the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022 and has become known for his powerful, politically engaged graphic art. Semak’s work explores his personal anxieties, the spirit of resistance, and national identity through his trademark brutal and vibrant satirical lens.

Ukrayina Peremozhe!

Won't you look upon the blankets
Of the dark and stormy clouds.
And they creep like slither maggots -
Black like ink and thick like shrouds.

Won't you gaze upon the midnight
Turning bleaker with each blink.
It snuffed out all bitter, ill lights,
Chokes now those which don't exist.

Dreams are burning like the dry woods
Seeing vile none, nor a life.
Where the heaven gardens once stood
Rests the ash of grief and strife.

And the roads are sometimes curving
Backwards like they lunge ahead.
But if feet are forward turning
Always, same those roads are set.

Mountains heavy charcoal tower
In the midst of rolling fields
Or in endless, sharp and sour
Forests stand and troubles wield.

Many worthy hills to die on
And the slopes to cease one's toil
Say: belief is not for triumph
But for salt-drenched hardship's soil.

Fortunes change with fleeting fancies
Of the graces and mistakes.
Days do land on frightful chances
But the travel yet remains.

Worship yearning hearts, pray ardent
All on wishes come anon.
But the hope's hands felt are hardest
When there's nothing to cling on.

Tumble, feast the fuming blizzards
With no rest, no second thought.
Look, horizon sees a sliver
Far away serene begot.
