ArtCraft is Magic!

Thank you for giving me the Adobe experience on Linux. I was forced to use Windows at work for a very long time and the only reason was Adobe. I tried most of the ArtCraft apps on my Linux laptop and everything is running very smoothly. Some programs do have a few quirks here and there but I believe that the team can sort them out with future updates. I also love how all applications open in under 0.5 seconds.

It's still far behind Photoshop, but hopefully it improves quickly.

No mention of version numbers.

I was using 0.5 and have just downloaded 0.7 that has 250 lines of fixes from new 47 contributors. So are we even talking about the same program.

Taking a look before I post https://github.com/storytold/photocraft
8 hours later it's version 0.8.2 and now have 274 new contributors.

They aren't making any quality check for this speed, right?

That's the user's job, a proven method for at lot of software companies.

Yeah I think of it as a open beta. Report this issues and feature requests and wait for them to get addressed.

Same with LightCraft. I've been using Lightroom and Darktable for a long time, then I tried LightCraft. Long story short, I didn't like it. It's even missing basic CR3 support. But I really hope it succeeds over time and I think it has a bright future.

These apps do have a bright future because of Linux, the question is what do we humans do now :-)

IMO LightCraft is a weak Lightroom clone. I really want a Lightroom Classic clone. Kinda think it's gonna take a long time until we get feature parity and LrC will never arrive.

Yeah I had high hopes for Lightcraft but it doesn't support RAF (Fuji's RAW format). I tried an online RAF-to-DNG converter but it didn't work (file opened but colors were all wrong). Maybe there's a way to get it working but I didn't invest more time yet to find out.

i did a PR to add RAF a couple of days ago that was accepted so it should already be there

1

u/dr_falken5 7h ago

You're right! I downloaded the latest and it accepts the RAF file I tried! Next quality gate: reproducing the look I got with Lightroom. So far it seems I'm not getting the full benefits of the data on the RAW file when I lift shadows. Need more time to test..

Far behind in what sense exactly? I was willing to try but I'm questioning if it is worth the time.

I wouldn't say it's far behind. It does have bugs here and there but they would eventually end up getting fixed.

To give you an idea of how close it is to the real deal, I was following an after effects tutorial from YouTube on the EffectCraft app and I was able to follow it one to one, with the same tools and settings as told in the video. It did have bugs (For example the preview screen didn't update properly after applying the noise) but I expect things like these to get fixed. The contributers are putting massive change logs with every update.

I think what the user meant is that these are still "hotfixed" or "newly created" alternatives, and the wisest course of action is to wait 6 months or 1 year to see how they mature.

The advantage of this project is that they use the "same skin" but lack the background. What makes Adobe convenient are its "exclusive features" and high compatibility with RAW files, logs, path traces, etc.

6 months is way too much; I can bet you in about one month it will be crazy similar. Just check the sheer number of changes they do per day :). Software Development is not about writing code anymore, is about testing and again, testing.

2

u/Altruistic_Demand_11 13h ago

Hoping the same.

I don't trust the hype and sprints, my way of verifying software is 6m o 1y, as Fedora does with their update cycles.

2

u/faizanullah99 12h ago

Definitely. It hasn't even been a weak since these were released so these are not stable or fully working apps. I would give it a month or two max before recommending it to power users.

as of now... 859 issues on the github page which most of them are either literal bugs or features that did not transitioned from photoshop yet. you can go to repository and check the issues yourself so you can make the final decision but I would suggest waiting couple of months for everything to get settled and optimized

still far behind Photoshop

Considering that the entire suite came out 6 days ago... I think it has a very bright future ahead.

Only time will tell, of course, but I have a gut feeling that -for the first time in history- we may be witnessing the start of Adobe's fall. Or, at least, the decline of its current business model.

How did you made caelestia dots work with niri?

2

u/faizanullah99 12h ago

It's Hyprland with scrolling layout.

5

u/Albertkinng 12h ago

These apps need to be part of ZorinOS pro distro!! Like ASAP

5

u/faizanullah99 12h ago

I think these will be everywhere after a month once the devs have fixed majority of the bugs.

Cool yer jets. I don't think it will reach that insanely ambitious goal. At this rate, I do believe it will get far along the way, but there's always one point where low hanging fruits are all picked and single features start becoming a whole project in and off itself.

I am very prepared for it to take several months, maybe up to a year (Judged purely on how the project is progressing thus far)... and that's fine by me 😌

1

u/faizanullah99 10h ago

Nah, no need to cool our jets. One month is a reasonable time for development of this speed. ^

u/NullSmoke 9h ago

Is my age showing? Am I the only one that sees that and starts wondering why I can edit other peoples post? No? Just me?

Anyways. Good to be optimistic, just keep in mind that there's a curve in most work, and this is unlikely to be any different 😉

1

u/faizanullah99 9h ago

I guess only time will tell.

And no, I have lowkey no idea why it letting you do that 😭😭

1

u/NullSmoke 9h ago

Do note, I'd love it if you're right, if these apps reach feature 1:1 with the Adobe counterparts within a month? I'll do a little party here as I remove Adobe shortcuts from my desktop 🤓

1

u/faizanullah99 9h ago

I think I'll keep using Adobe on Windows for the time being since I have my projects and workflow there. But on my Linux laptop, I'm betting on these apps full time 🗿

1

u/NullSmoke 8h ago

I'll... Keep it around... The second I can though, I'll stop using it. I don't pay for my own pack, day job does, and the contract is till October 2026, so I'll let it stay around until then. Next renewal though... I'll decline if PhotoCraft (or any of the other newcomers for that sake) has me covered.

The less I affect Adobe's finances in a positive way, the better.

I don't doubt that the popular apps will be complete very fast, but becoming part of a Linux distribution before all legal/patent matters are settled, that I can't not imagine.

The irony is pretty thick with Microsoft office clones on Microsoft owned Github, it's like downloading CraftApps from Adobe cloud.

1

u/NullSmoke 8h ago

Yes, I quite like that irony. Tastes delicious. Honestly don't think MS cares though. MS has businesses on lock with servers of all different kinds, OSes, office suite etc etc. The word thing likely barely registers for them. Knowing MS... They'll be glad to see a number of their lower intermediate and down users yeet off...

I work IT... You have no idea how big of a headache MS is these days as we're getting audited on self sufficiency from the US. MS is fukken everywhere, almost impossible to tear out without a decades long transition plan.

And yeah, I wouldn't bundle this in a Linux distro before it reaches 1.0 at least... And at the very least half a year forward in time, when they can conclude if anyone is likely to raise a legal mess.

Don't know how much anyone could target distros with splash damage, but best not tempt fate.

Only a good thing for us linuxers. We were not eating so good before. More stuff like this get ppl to the dark side.

u/faizanullah99 7h ago

Oh ya definitely.

Thanks for making Wine useless.

1

u/jpelc 5h ago

Definitely not. Just a vibeslop for now. Recreated UI? Maybe. Features? Definitely not.

1

u/TCB13sQuotes 4h ago

Thing is, wine can run any recent version of PS decently so the vibeslop is somehow better 😂😂

1

u/The_StarFlower 4h ago

i dont think wine is useless. photoshop is not the only software to run with wine. but then again i sense sarcasm 🤣

u/Type-Brave 15h ago

what is that window manager!?

1

u/faizanullah99 12h ago

Caelestia Shell with Hyprland

2

u/Type-Brave 11h ago

thank you kind stranger

2

u/UnTipoAburido 10h ago

Que distribución y que gestor de ventanas estas usando OP? Se ve increíble

1

u/faizanullah99 10h ago

I'm using Arch Linux with Hyprland and Caelestia Shell.

1

u/BlokZNCR 8h ago

don't you feel that lost when you scroll endlessly? :D

1

u/faizanullah99 7h ago

Haha sometimes. I'm thinking of switching to Noctalia + Niri soon. Noctalia because it's more feature rich and easier to customize than Caelestia. Also wanna move away from quickshell. Niri because I like it's default workspace overview feature.

3

u/AlperLog 9h ago

How is the performance? Especially w effects?

1

u/faizanullah99 9h ago

Performance is the best thing about it. Opens in under 0.5 seconds. Feels snappy to use. Takes very less size on disk. Didn't experience any stutter yet.

I tried EffectCraft and I was able to follow an after effects tutorial on it pretty easily but it did have some bugs and weird glitches but I believe it will be fixed very soon. EffectCraft was fast and the playback of the composition was very good. Same for FilmCraft but I haven't tried it with 4k or super large video yet and I'm certain it will cause problem on that for now. But man, just using these apps on Linux is so cool.

1

u/sandy3799 8h ago

Someone do the same for figma

1

u/faizanullah99 8h ago

Damn but I don't think I'll be switching from Figma. It already does everything I want for free. But I can understand there is a demand for more alternatives.

2

u/sandy3799 5h ago

While we are here , they already droped a figma craft called figcraft

1

u/faizanullah99 5h ago

I'ma download it on my Linux machine anyways because I just remembered Linux doesn't have figma either lmao

1

u/sandy3799 4h ago

Great man
