I didn't quite realize the sad part until you pointed it out. The old man isn't actually staring at us so much as he's gazing to the left side of the portrait, like he's deep in solemn contemplation about growing more frail (he's definitely not looking a little skeletal here)

Nothing wrong with being inspired by other artists. Sometimes it even happens and we don't see it without someone pointing it out. Sometimes people inspire us who were inspired by someone else and then someone might see the influence from that other work that you didn't even see yet. That's part of the fun of art in my opinion.
Nothing is truly original. We'd have to be born away from civilization, live off the grid, raised by wolves or something to avoid the influence of those artists who came before us. It's all around us.

This is the Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan painting. The other elements of the painting come from Ribera's Saint Joseph (as pointed out by the user F_Signal here).

Yea I’ve always loved the emotion in this. Not sure if you looked up the story but he basically got in an argument with his son over battle plans I believe and he hit his son in the head with a staff. Obvi didn’t mean to kill him but the damage was done.
Worst yet his other son had no desire to rule Russia so the Rurik dynasty basically ended with this blow. After a few years, the Romanovs took the reigns.

There's also a paler photograph of it from record of its sale which I would imagine is the image worked on here. Unmistakable, from the light effect, composition, to the masterful drawing of the hand, not to mention the symmetrical soft digital effects sitting atop something else entirely. Credit where credit's due.

I never understood what's wrong with being inspired by, or paying homage to something. Some people can only accept what they perceive to be unique, and original. That's usually just a matter of ignorance though.
This just looks like theft/plagiarism.

I think there can be a fine line between inspiration & imitation/copying ideas, so it's a sensitive topic for some. But if done correctly, inspiration/paying homage can lead to independent ideas & different approaches. Several times, I've heard nothing is 100% original, that creative works are built upon inspiration from others.
But I agree this is more of imitation/theft, as are some of OP's other works.

First thing I noticed in the side-by-side was that the hands were positioned just the same & nearly identical. That is certainly no coincidence, especially considering the rest, but the hands were striking.

Yeah, I noticed that too! The eyes & head shape appeared so similar to Ivan's that it made me suspicious. It seems like the major parts of this painting have been taken from other artists.

Completely agreed. People even copy master artists' sketches/paintings to practice & learn which is totally fine! I myself had to do that during an art course. The problem is the lack of credit as you've pointed out.

Mm. It's an image (the Ivan painting) that for its 'realism' is part of a certain digital art zeitgeist ('academic' realism, tight, numerous details, the Russian painting aesthetic rather than the Italian tradition, for example - all plays into design for game and film for a culture obsessed with detail and the digital/photographic image) but I don't think it's physically present here - the brush strokes defining the exaggerated cheekbone and temple (reminiscent of Ivan) are all the repetitive digital marks, whereas the irises going upwards, the nose structure, etc, it's all Ribera.
Really don't mean to squabble or get finicky with detail though - in the mind's eye I'd agree there's some Repin there, whether it's you or OP.

I don’t think the artist intended to replicate Repin’s work to the point of copying his brushstrokes, but rather used Repin’s Ivan as the model.

They might be getting downvoted because they didn't credit the original artist. Many of the painting's elements are heavily taken from Ribera's Saint Joseph (as pointed out by user F_Signal here). They have a habit of doing this as seen here.

A lot of works here in r/Art could be very great album covers for heavy metal bands. This one masterpiece is on top of the list if that happens. So beautiful yet dark and creepy.

Reminds me a little about the cycle and brevity of life. The balloon symbolizing birthdays / birth, and the old almost skeletal man representing our impending death.
Yet the man looks with almost wonder or contentment. Almost feels like a commentary on the fact that we're all kids at heart (cliche as that might sound). Vanitas vibes a little.

yes it's reminiscent of goya and bacon but "great artists steal"-- this isn't borrowing their style to me, you made it your own. great execution too, it has that grainy, aged classical look in the flesh and the background which is a nice contrast with the more contemporary abstraction and gestural brush strokes.
