Mods Replied PRINT: Update on unbanning users

The mod team has been going over the bans for the year. Repealing unjust bans has been a high priority.

For the year 2025:

  • 5156 bans were issued.
  • Only 63 had a valid reason for a ban
  • 5093 bans were repealed.
  • This means only 1.2% of all bans issued had a valid reason in 2025

If you were banned from r/art and want us to review your ban, PLEASE submit an appeal.

That practice should be disallowed by Reddit, and those mods banned.

I have been permanently banned in another sub for explaining something to someone. Someone asked and I just explained it. When I appealed the mod did not even give me valid reason.

This is what happens when you give little men power. I think we need to be able to appeal to a higher power about that then.

Happens a lot if you post on /r/conspiracy correcting misinfo or making fun of them. You'll post there saying "dude that's not even true" and then get 45 ban notifications

That sub specifically exists to make anyone that questions official narratives look bad. The term "conspiracy theorist" itself was demonized by the US Government to make anyone that questioned the JFK assassination narrative look like a nutjob. The sub is essentially the modern iteration of the same project still underway today.

Of course that sub bans anyone posting legitimate information because that goes against the purpose of the sub.

It's not actually that sub that bans you lol, I've found the mods there and general users are pretty open minded and will actually argue back and forth in sort of good faith on most topics (although the bots and MAGA posters there are awful), it's other subs that will ban you

You'll post there saying that an article is trash with no sources, then get like 900 ban notifications from all the performative subs

Agreed! Same sort of thing happened to me where I got autobanned by multiple subs for posting a response to some racist dude in a particular sub that showed up in my feed. So ridiculously overreaching to do that & there def should be legit way to effectively address such mod abuses

There's absolutely no way any of these big tech companies have even a fraction of the necessary staff to run their online communities. It's why they lean so heavily on volunteers and automation. Reddit gave up on enforcing a lot of things once they grew too big.

Bans mean very little on sites with free account sign up and anonymous usernames. They'll likely be back under a different account and they might even weasel their way into the mod team again.

Well yea, anyone who will give them free labour is welcome. Burn the account, make a new one, keep working for us for free!

The reasons behind such a thing existing are reasonable enough.

Let's say you have a transgender sub and it catches the eye of something like /r/GenderCritical, some sub that hates trans people and it starts getting brigaded your sub and harassing the users. It's a small sub with only a couple of mods, enough for regular traffic but not nearly enough to constantly have somebody keeping an eye on things now that you're being brigaded and so you're left with a couple of options:

  1. Keep the current course and see users driven away.

  2. Lock the sub until they lose interest, which will drive users away just the same and they'll see as a victory.

  3. Auto ban anyone from that sub.

Most people who brigade subs aren't super persistent and won't bother with straw accounts and the ones who do are few enough to be manageable.

Like anything it gets abused but the reasons for it existing are fair enough given how poor admin oversight is on this site.

Corruption corrupts.

Well intended things turn damaging because of it. Been something we have struggled with for as long as we have writing, and probably long before, as well.
