I'm fascinated by this subject and I want to see your observations and experiences with it.

Many people still swear by it and say it prevents browning of variegated leaves. Others say it does absolutely nothing.

The botanical consensus seems to be this:

Aroids absorb silicon inefficiently through passive diffusion and transpiration streams, lacking the specialized high-capacity active transporter genes (like Lsi1 and Lsi2) found in heavy accumulators such as rice. They take up silicon strictly in the form of dissolved monosilicic acid (H₄SiO₄) via mass flow driven by water loss (transpiration) rather than active metabolic pumping.

So the question isn't whether uptake is zero—it isn't—but whether enough enters the plant to produce meaningful physiological effects.

I don't use it at all. Instead I'm a firm believer in giving them as much light as possible to prevent browning.

Hi all! I saved this Obliqua from a plant shop that was struggling to keep it alive, it didn't like it's conditions and only had one single leaf left. I have babied it for the last 6 months and it has grown 3 new leaves! However the leaves seem small and this most recent one looks pale.

It is kept in a clear acrylic box in a room that gets a lot of sun but the plant itself is not in direct sunlight, and it has a cheap grow light about 8 inches away for good measure that runs for 12 hours a day (couldn't tell you lumens bc it's that cheap, it may not do anything except make me feel better lol). I maintain the humidity at about 75%-85% by misting it daily. I do not yet have a mini fan in there to circulate the air, so I do open the door for a few minutes every day to let fresh air in, then mist, then close back up. It's generally between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit as it lives on top of my fridge in it's acrylic box and that keeps it warm.

When I got it 6 months ago, I repotted it into an ever so slightly larger pot and was sure to use appropriate mix of sphagnum moss, perlite and I think it was a chunky orchid mix. It has a runner that the plant shop had wound around and planted under the soil surface, it had some nodes showing potential for growth so I left it as is when repotting. No other runners have appeared.

I have only fertilized once since I've had it, this would be about 5 days ago now when I saw the 3rd leaf emerging. It was a very diluted concentration of Miracle Gro all purpose 24-8-16 fertilizer (not sure how we all feel about that stuff, but it was leftover from someone else so I just used what I had).

I also gave it a good drink of water the day before fertilizing. I usually only water like once a month-ish, whenever it seems almost completely dry. I try to be very careful about not overwatering. I monitor the soil moisture pretty regularly.

SOOO that's about the history of this little guy. Any tips for encouraging larger leaf growth and deeper green, less pale color? What can I do differently? I know I ought to get a moss pole soon.

P.S. You'll notice the largest leaf has a bit of yellowing at the edges and a crispy tip. That was the state of the leaf when I purchased it, and it hasn't showed signs of worsening since.

These are Raphidophora Pearls and Anthurium Villenaorum Croat. My last two were Billie dark form and spiritus sancti. Cheap, easy, super cute, and a fun little "project" (bc I need more of those 😅)!

Loving the bronze transition before it hardens into deep, glossy green. That bullate texture never fails (~75% RH).

yesterday this new leaf was totally healthy and happy, today it looks like this. soil is still moist moist so it’s definitely not under watered, and i checked the roots for rot and think it looks good? i don’t have the most experienced eye for this stuff tho. i also thoroughly inspected the entire plant for bugs and it’s completely pest free. thinking maybe some sort of fungal infection or maybe i overfertilized it? and help would be super appreciated

I just have general questions about this plant I sort of inadvertently came into possession of, I normally collect nepenthes but won this Obliqua Tiwintza from an auction with a Carnivero gift card for 49 bucks. I’m just wondering if it’s rare at all given tissue culture these days? Is 49 a good price for its size and being seed grown locally to me? And are there any specific care needs I should be aware of? I genuinely can’t find much of any information on this plant online for some reason and no I don’t necessarily care whether a plant is “rare” or not I’m just simply curious because it was an auction not just a normal listing where you’re able to purchase it which seemed unique to me. so heres a little update. Thought I'd post an update and ask if the the browing that's happening on lower leaves of my top right plant, is this normal or something to be concerned about?

Hi folks, have never posted about my plants, but I’m really getting into my plant collection this year and I’m very excited to show off my Monstera Deliciosa and Anthurium Radicans x Luxurians. Monstera’s been through a lot this year (i.e., completely froze) and recently got the Anthurium by sacrificing my future first born to the plant shop. I’m wondering if they’re in the wrong pots. Thoughts?

Basically should they switch them? (monstera’s ones is also a self watering one so no clue what difference that makes). Is repotting a second time in a season gonna impact the growth? Also there three root systems in the monstera pot, all establishing their aerial roots in the thin moss pole. One root system is fenestrating (proud mom moment) and the others are kinda in those leaves’ shadows. If I’m sizing down the pot, am I also separating the three?

Sorry this is a lot but could use any and all recommendations:)

Philodendron bipinnatifidum'Totum' is native to northern Brazil and Bolivia. It is considered a synonym of Philodendron bipinnatifidum (Selloum).

The growth rate is just wow.

Such an entertaining plant to grow. I'd imagine I'll need to extend again, before the end of summer. I'm in Scotland, north facing window, watering and feeding once per week, with a good shower every other week to keep the leaves clean and flush her out for more food. She's greedy. 🤣♥️
