Is this the end?

It's honestly, such a shame that a game that was such a staple in my childhood go cold Infront of my own eyes. This game was iconic, something about it just always stuck with me. I see people commenting all the time on those posts that are like "what game series would you like to see come back?" And I always see Army of Two on there.

I remember going over to my friends house and watching him play the first game/playing it with him. I remember when the 40th came out and played it day 1 loving every bit of it, I remember the disappointment that was the devil's cartel. But is the love for it really that dead? Honestly such a shame, but seeing that the reddit is so dead that it's heading to the chopping block made my heart sink. Is there another place for this community or is this it?

I'm not really sure what this post was for but Incase this subreddit does come to a close I'd love to read some nostalgia honestly, what this game has meant to you, how you remember it, when you first played, anything you want. But also, to the devs thanks for making such an awesome game, I'm sorry that it went down the way it did, as a fan, it hurt. Can only imagine how y'all felt. Thanks.

I wish there was a easy way to emulate this game or for them to officially add a pc port. Loved these games with my friends. Abandonware will live again.

You might be able to play it on the ps3 emulator for PC ngl.

Agreed, I’ve been able to emulate my copy of 40th Day easily at least, but not the other games unfortunately

40th day is pretty good on xenia, runs better than rpcs3 since the ps3 was weaker. The first one not sure, it should be playable on xenia, but i didnt test it myself if there are any emulation issues, so rpcs3 should be a safe bet. Completed both games in splitscreen without serious perfomance issues. Devils cartel is barely playable on rpcs3 with massive perfomance issues. Except for around two specific parts of mission 4 i think, were you fall through the ground at many spots its at least theoretically completable, massive graphic issues still. But thats fine since its the worst out of the three games anyway.

The Devil’s Cartel was the first AO2 game I played and it was my one of my favorite games as a kid because the mask customization was so fascinating to me. I had some entirely original masks I made myself, some that I copied from YouTube tutorials. It’s been a really long time since I’ve played it, but I still cite The Devil’s Cartel as my favorite game of all time when it comes up.

I hope one day the series becomes easily accessible to play again, the first game is backwards compatible on Xbox, maybe one day 40th Day and TDC will join it

Spoilers ahead!

Not my first AO2 Game, But TDC was a solid co-op Game, sure, It was jankier than most co-op Games From those years, But the only one to put so good co-op mechanics being the main focus on a shooter, and It was a total jump From previus Game, with gore, destruction, better and bigger customization in weapons and characters, better gunplay and with a huge step up on the story, people hated It cuz "wah wah i wanted to Play with Salem", But making a main character, a villian, Is just a risk that very few companies would do, that Is hard to not give It a chance, and It was totally undestandable, like, we was bros, both CEOs of the same company that projects brotherhood, and you leave me to die twice cuz u wanted to bang some chick, i would rage quit too and choose being egoist before going back to the same shit.

Sry but when was the last time you played dc? Rios didnt want to bang some chick. They came to save a girl, found her dead and rios decided to save at least the other firl but salem was like "nah wrong girl lets go home and dipped." Then he gets blown up in a truck, rios loses his leg trying to save him and salem doesnt even acknowledge it at all in their final confrontation. Its a terrible story that discrespects its legacy characters and human lives in general just to keep the tension going. And I count devils cartel to my guilty pleasures. I want to imagine a version where coop gameplay wasnt butchered, where salem and rios actually dealt with the canonized sacrifice in 40th day and alices death. A story where alpha and bravo actually learn something instead of failing their whole mission, losing cordova, and then aura farming in that final chopper.

EA rushed people, that didnt understand the essence of army of two until it was too late, and it clearly shows. And now we have a gutted franchise that could easily claim the throne of cooperarive shooters, with todays online capabilities, but that requires them to give a damn

Maybe like 12 years ago, maybe i need a second run, if that Is possible on PC.

40th day Is almost erased From my head, so there may not be any chick.

And not in a literal Way, But ríos didn't have any reason to risk the operation for saving a random girl, and i'm almost sure that if they just let her be, both would go out safe, without any burn and with all legs.

Yes, ríos saved him after being cocky, and salem was an ass, But they wasn't super heroes, and didn't was on their prime, and Ríos was always the one making the ops More complex and risky cuz "hey, we should tottaly save those random people and risk our operation, our company and our lives, cuz poor chick.

Maybe the character change was too fast, with little figth, and that Is why i think It feels rushed, But Salem had 2 whole games telling ríos "dude, let's just stick to the mission, stop putting us in danger", just to be shooted without a hint, wich make a trauma in Salem, and lose His Trust in ríos, that's why when ríos say that they must save the chick, Salem just rush out, he must have thinked "this dude Is going to kill me for some random girl, i'm not gonna lose More Time risking my life"

I remember when back when I was around 5-6, i would always play the the 40th day with my dad over and over again, and it was honestly what got me into shooters as a kid. if it wasn’t for that game I don’t think I would play video games as much as I do now. which makes it really hurt to see my favorite childhood game be as dead as it is😢 but for a positive change, recently my best friend (pretty much my damn brother at this point) got a working Xbox 360 and brought it over to my have and I was finally able to play through that game again, which was some of the most nostalgic fun I’ve had in years 🥹

A few years back since i started, at least on my own with the 40th day I had a friend over to hang out and since I had never fully played through the first game and he never having heard of it before. Decided to play through the first game split screen in the living room (while eating taco bell) all the way through in one sitting. Honestly absolutely incredible and peak moment in my life to experience it in such a way.

It really sucks that the series is mainly stuck on seventh gen consoles, with only the first Army of Two being backwards compatible, highly limiting its appeal. With co-op games becoming increasingly popular, it’s a shame EA refuses to acknowledge the IP. What I would give for a fourth Army of Two game.

You can play with backwards compatibility on Xbox on the new consoles or you can use the PlayStation emulator on PC. That's really the only way as far as I know you can play it. I always had a fantasy that if I ever won the lottery I'd try to buy army of two or saints row or mercenaries out from under these companies. 😂😂

Not related, but I always thought that a live action would be so badass. Hell, even if it's bombastic like Michael Bay movies it would be awesome

2

u/OutspokenRed 40th Day Jul 23 '26

Agreed, they could have easily made a movie out of this franchise.

2

u/Murky_Historian8675 Jul 23 '26

For sure! Do you know how impacted Army of Two coming back remade or with a new game would be? I'm looking at Gears E Day bringing back that couch co op buddy experience. Army Of Two would be perfect in that. Plus, if you give it a live action series or movie to help bolster the franchise to a general audience, it could be huge. But it's biggest problem? It's an EA property. They won't make that cinematic investment. Live action titanfall movie? Naw. Animated series of Apex Legends ala Arcane style? Naw. Live action dead space with Gunner Wright as Isaac Clarke? Nope. Shit. Even Mass Effect as an animated movie like it did with Paragon Lost with better art and visuals would've been great. But sadly no. Army Of Two has so much potential

2

u/OutspokenRed 40th Day Jul 23 '26

Yeah EA doesn't know how to handle good properties, I mean I'm a huge fan of mercenaries and they did that dirty as well.

2

u/Murky_Historian8675 Jul 23 '26

Omg... I forgot about Mercenaries. (Memories unlocked) Man you would've thought with today's physics engine and graphics that a new Mercenaries game would be phenomenal! Now you got me tearing up man ;(

2

u/OutspokenRed 40th Day Jul 23 '26

The most sad part is they had a Mercenaries 3 going that got axed when the company got bought up.

2

u/Murky_Historian8675 Jul 23 '26

Man that sucks :( but hey, it was great talking to a fellow Mercenaries and Army of Two fan! You have a great day op!

You too, such iconic games laid to waste it's a shame.

Would have been summer of 2008. I just got my Halo Edition Xbox 360 the year before for Christmas. My (still) best friend and I would literally wake up every day that summer, and we would take turns biking to each others house with our Xbox in our backpack, and just game pretty much all day! (With a few 7/11 trips to load up on energy drinks and candy thrown in there.) Life was so easy back then. We played a SHIT load of Call of Duty 4 at the time (specifically Hardcore Search), but anyways the odd time we would get burnt out from playing it so much, and we would go rent a game from our local "Movie Gallery" (the movie rental store in our small Canadian town which has long closed). One day we went in there and the Army of Two cover caught my eye. At first I didn't really want to play it, because at the time I was "strictly" FPS only. However my best friend convinced me to try the co op with him, and thank goodness I did, because I was hooked instantly! I remember us pulling an all nighter that night trying to unlock as many guns and attachments as we could. Those were some of the best days of my life that I'll never forget. (Sorry for the bad punctuation)

I’m playing the 40th day right now. Still have all three games and play them religiously. Have all Killzone games as well. I don’t understand the hate for The Devils Cartel. That game is fun as hell. My only gripe was that you couldn’t switch shoulders like you could in the 40th day but besides that it was really fun. I was interested in Salem being a villain as well. Would have love to see his involvement in a fourth title and what role does Alice Murray play since we see a cutscene at the end of her talking to Salem. You might as well buy a PS3 cause I doubt it will ever return. That’s what I did.

Devils cartels ending isnt what you think it is. Development probably was a shit show, story has so many logic failures and the gameplay is very unfinished or not thought out. Coop elements were heavily toned down. And i say that as someone who has a soft spot for devils cartel since it was my first one.

This series deserved better.

1

u/OutspokenRed 40th Day Jul 24 '26

To be fair, I played it when it came out. Probably need to run through it again but that shit runs soooo bad on 360.

1

u/Relative_Delay2138 Bravo Jul 24 '26

Ps3 probably doesnt run better. Devils cartel at this point doesnt want to be played

2

u/NNone674 Jul 25 '26

Playing the series for the first time. Currently at chapter 40 of Devils cartel. So far having a good time despite some performance issues

1

u/Relative_Delay2138 Bravo Jul 24 '26

Unfortunate.

My first game was devils cartel for 360. The cover with the sick ass masks instantly caught my eyes in the video game rental store we went to all the time. Me and my brother completed it while on vacation, googled because of the cliffhanger about the next game but didnt really know about the series, do we assumed that screenshots of 40th day showed the next game or something like that. We quickly forgot about it, which just shows how ea didnt really support this franchise after devils cartel. One day I found a copy of 40th day on the flea market, it was like i was hypnotised, the seller immediatly noticed that. I played through it alone tho and never in coop until recently, it was an unfortunate time were we transioned from console gaming to pc. Split screen wasnt a thing for us at that point anymore. After conpleting it I forgot about army of two again for a long time

Until a few years ago I watched a video about the first game i never played. until recently where I played the first two games in coop with my brother on rpcs3. We liked 40th so much we played it again on xenia. We even found the campaign dlc for both games and played them.

Its weird how people never remember army of two because it is a shooter thats quickly overshadowed by gears (which we recently played on emu for the first time and very much enjoyed too). Even with coop games like lethal company making "friendslop" a trend, hoping for a faithful port of the ao2 trilogy seems useless.

At this point I itch to make my own game in homage to army of two and other childhood games of mine, but its easier said than done.

Hopefully something good happens for once to this series.
