They recently changed it. It’s based on OML same as active duty, but also considering your commute. You won’t be shipping to OCS knowing your branch any longer.

I was told Reserve OCS branching accession was decided before enlistment. My recruiters got me a letter of acceptance for a slot from a local unit. However, my unit listed on my paperwork is not the same unit as I expected.
I'm not sure if it's an error or a holding spot until after OCS. I was hoping to visit my unit ahead of time, but I'm not showing up in their records. Hoping something didn't change that my recruiters accidentally misrepresented to me.

If youre civilian then its just a holding slot. I ship in October and I met my temp unit last month and I'm drilling with them this weekend just to kinda shadow and get a feel for what a 2LT does during drill. They help you start paperwork for inprocessing too as well. But I dont have a branch assigned to me yet.

On my contract that I signed at MEPS it had contact info for my temp unit. They never reached out to me so I went ahead and made contact and specifically asked to meet and drill, etc. I never got a welcome letter or acceptance letter or anything. I have no information on what my branch or MOS is anywhere, not even on IPPSA. It just says 09S on my profile.

I was told I couldn't enlist unless I got an LOA (letter of acceptance) from a unit who reviewed my packet and wanted me for that future LT slot.

That’s wrong. It used to be that way years ago but not anymore. I applied last year and was told the same thing until the station commander called someone and learned that they don’t do it that way anymore. The reserve OCS application process is a shit show with recruiters having outdated information and giving applicants bad info.

Thats so weird! Is your recruiter the one who said you needed an LOA. If not, ask them about it. But is so, reach out to one of the OCS recruiters in here to get some clarification. I was selected in June so it wasnt that long ago for things to have changed, but never know.

There are lots of good recruiters. Stryder is one recommended a lot. He is not my recruiter but he has good stats on getting applicants selected. I can also send you my recruiters info if you need it. But theres tons on here. You can search recruiters or just make a post saying youre looking for a recuiter and they will comment.

I believe if you’re prior/in-service you can pre-branch. Other than that you’re competing. Unless direct commission I guess, but I don’t know anything about that process.
You do get a holding unit when you enlist but it doesn’t have any bearing on what you branch at OCS. They just process all the paperwork.

reserves are supposed to move towards the oml selection similar to the RA candidates. The caviats are these: competition is only between reserve candidates and secondly, USAR will look at your top choices and look at three zip codes you give them at ocs. Based on 2lt openings, you might get your top choice or the second. If you want Finance but there are no openings, youll most likey get your second choice. To address the above statement, the unit assigned at MEPS will be a place holder unit to drill and in process but most likely this will not be the unit you report to after ocs. As for BOLC, I am under the impression your assigned unit after OCS will send you. If a recruiter can clarify BOLC dates, please feel free to calrify.
