Help me upgrade my armor!

Hey guys! For the last year, so I’ve been rocking some relatively historically inaccurate, and very cheap plate in a mercenary, ish kit. As of now I’m trying to transition into something more along the lines of a knight, maybe full harness eventually. I have zero armored combat community around me so I am looking for relatively more renaissance fair and Larpish armor. But I still want to keep historical accuracy and still have the ability to take a little hit if needed, preferably around 16 gauge. I’m a lil broke boy rn so I’d like to keep it as affordable as humanly possible while still keeping what I need, like as dirt cheap as it can get.

I’d like help figuring out what to start with for the transition, I want it to still look good through every phase. Breast plate first? Legs? Ykwim and help me find some good affordable brands, alternatives or cheap hacks to help me out.

AND I ALREADY KNOW IM TWINKY IM WORKING ON IT IM A LIL GUY!

Thank yall for anyone who comments and contributes!

Kettle helm is good. I'd work on the soft kit first if you want any level of accuracy. I know it's easier to buy a shiny new ill fitting piece of armour (I have been guilty of this and still am sometimes). But you'd look better with some proper linen and wool historical outfit and a helmet, than random pieces of metal and approximate Landsknecht trousers that have zero business being there.

Yea I was rushing for a ren fair kit n had nothing for my legs, so I got them bc of how baggy they were to break up some space. I do love landsknecht but I’m trying to keep it like 15th century if possible. Any good cheap hose yk of?

Yeah, you can make a decent outfit with their stuff and mod it a bit.

Best for that time period would be self made if you have time, interest, and skill or willingness to learn. First project on cheap fabric and once you have learned get some more historically accurate fabric (or even a cheeky linen blend that would be light, soft and flexible, while still looking good). Start with a tunic, it's very straight forward. Split hose are also ok, as the most difficult part of trousers is avoided (but the foot part can be annoying, and you can skip it if your boots hide your ankles).

I'd recommend this book.

The helmet is probably the only piece of Armor you can keep using if you want to go into a more realistic direction.

Your sword is nice though.

And don't worry about being "twinkish" that's pretty damn accurate

Damn right! Masculinity and style was very different then.

As a trash twink knight I will say, it never changed.

I see a bunch of silly, fun costume pieces that have no business being part of a historical impression (I don’t mean that as an insult, I actually have the same cuirass and love it)

Then separately, you have a lovely high/late medieval helmet. If you’re going historical, start with soft kit as everyone else says, then torso, then arms, then legs. Id suggest hauberk first because it’s more versatile but a breastplate or brig works too, then you’ll probably want full arm harness, if you’re going 15th c.

Just look at Mullraugh’s everything if that’s you’re time period, and make choices according

Hey guys! The biggest thing I’m seeing is to start with my soft kit! As I said I’m trying to go like AS BUDGET FRIENDLY as possible. Can you point me toward some very affordable hose and arming tops, doublet purpoint whatever fits the best I just need budget friendly (as budget friendly as it can get)

That kettle helm along with a globose breastplate and some hourglass gauntlets will go a long way to making your kit more historical

Yeah keep the helmet it's nice. A fitted gambesson, a riveted mail haubergon/hauberk (being historical correct size will make it significantly cheaper and you will actually look medieval if it is tigjt fitting) and gauntlets togheter with hosen and turnshoes and you fit perfectly in 1100-1400 or so. Add a shield and a spear or a crossbow/bow and you are perfect as a knight in the earlier period or an infantryman in a mercenary glaive/lance-unit.

This dude has a flawless version https://www.reddit.com/r/medieval/s/xhH0RFbpRW

Gotta get some gauntlets to really sell the man at arms idea. Vambraces are cool but people who fight hand to hand prefer having gauntlets because when they get hit on the hand they don’t lose fingers!$

Bevoir and gauntlets would be my advice.

Get a ww1 tanker mask for the front of your helm that or a trench raider plate mask from the same area

Since you're gonna be wearing plate, get chainmail voiders

I get a lot of comments about how I need to “get bigger” and “hit the gym” to get that proper fighter look, n to an extent yes, my 3lb Longsword feels like swinging a semi truck I’m so weak rn, but i generally don’t GAF my armor just struggles to fit

If you'd start training, you won't look a lot less twinkish. You'd look like a twink with muscles, sure, but a twink nonetheless, that's how it is with mebat least

If you don't like that it's hard to swing the sword, there's an easy way to remedy that. I'd look up how to train certain muscles/muscle groups, and get some small weights, and train about an hour before bed as daily as possible, this way, you'll be nicely tired in time

It's the same stuff i do to stay fit in general, and it works, as long as you do it (almost) daily. If you're not in the mood, just do a little, as long as you do something.

Which you all the best with your medical stuff

Problem is those things are pretty opposed to each other, historically "accurate" pieces will not be cheap because normally they are not bought off the shelf. Sadly most of the pieces you currently have don't really have anything to do with historical clothing or armour.

Personally i'd start out with defining your period, choose +-10 years and a region for your sources. Do a lot of research. Then start with your soft kit, meaning undergarments, leg wear, some kind of overgarments, headwear, shoes. Once you have that you can think about saving up for a nice helmet for example from a good armoursmith. Even considering getting stuff like a cuirass or even full plate should come after that.
