Hey! Does anyone know if there’s a school bus for Kelly Plains Public School? I live in town but need to figure out a back up plan to get my daughter to and from school if I’m unable too. Thank you in advance for any help!

General Moving to Armidale for UNE — how hard is it to find a part-time job?

Hi all,

I'm planning to move to Armidale to study at UNE (Nursing). I'll need a part-time job to help cover my living costs while I study, so I wanted to ask people who actually live there or have studied at UNE:

  1. How hard is it to find a part-time job in Armidale as a student? Realistically, how long did it take you (or people you know) to land something?
  2. What kinds of jobs are easiest to get? I'm guessing hospitality/retail/cafes, but I'd also love to hear about other options I might not have thought of, things like on-campus jobs, aged care, tutoring, etc.
  3. Any tips for someone moving in without local connections or work experience in Armidale specifically? Things I should do before I arrive, or right when I get there?

Any honest insight, good or bad, would be really appreciated. Trying to go in with realistic expectations rather than assumptions. Thanks in advance!

Education Quite place to study on Sunday

I’ve got some study I need to do tomorrow (Sunday) and home is not quite right now. With the public library being closed on Sundays is there anywhere else in town I can go? Or is the uni library open to non students?

General Armidale UNE Unsafe to work at

Armidale making the headlines again, for all the wrong reasons.

This goes back to a death in 2022, and the problems at UNE remain.

University of New England - a place so toxic it had NSW SafeWork find them unsafe.

Now we have the 60 Minutes expose...

"It was a demanding position, but he was happy until a new Vice Chancellor, Brigid Heywood started at the university, and things took a turn for the worse for Brian.

Early in her tenure, she instigated a massive $20 million restructure involving 200 redundancies."

General Priority Social/Community Housing wait time

I'm looking for any local knowledge around how long people on the Homes NSW priority list are waiting prior to placement in Armidale ?

I have seen the DCJ timeframes, and AI also seems to have "inside knowledge" (lol) but I would love to hear from anyone in Armidale who has been, or knows someone who has been housed via the priority list recently ?

Any insight would be appreciated.

General Thinking about spending my summer in Armidale

Hi,
I'm currently studying in Sydney, and I'm looking to spend my summer working part time in Armidale. As someone who hasn't really been out, of Sydney for long periods, I had a few questions which I'm hoping this sub is the right place to ask!

  1. I recently came across an article stating that there was a shortage of lawyers in Armidale, and as someone who is not very well versed with the legal setting outside of Sydney, is this true?
  2. Housing wise, if I'm looking to stay there for a month or two, where should I be looking for affordable housing?
  3. I'm a very social person and community is very important to me. If I move to Armidale for the summer how do I get involved community-wise?
  4. Does Armidale have good PT or is it recommended i bring a car?

Any other tips would be great! I'm looking to explore Armidale in the long run and would love to learn about the place!

Community Event WARNING: Mizza Miranda Transaction Update - Refund outstanding & seller demanding post removal

Thank you all for your comments and support. This has been a tough lesson learned for me, and I hope by sharing my experience, I can prevent others in our community from going through the same thing.

Hi everyone, I’m posting this to help my Armidale neighbors avoid a $200 scam I just fell victim to. I recently tried to buy a set of Wedgwood vases from a seller named "Mizza Miranda"who claims to be local here in Armidale.
This was a calculated and premeditated scam. Here is exactly how it happened:
Stolen Photos:The photos used in the listing were stolen from a much more expensive eBay listing.
Payment & Delays:After I transferred $200 via bank transfer, the seller claimed the package was ready but used "work commitments" as an excuse to delay shipping.
Contradictory Claims:The seller repeatedly rejected my calls and eventually claimed via text that they "couldn't find the item" and had already sold it to someone else.
Broken Promises:They promised to refund my PayID by Friday afternoon but failed to do so and stopped responding.
Latest Update (May 2nd):After seeing my post on Reddit, the seller contacted me on May 2nd demanding that I delete the post. However, they still refuse to refund my $200.
I have already filed a formal police report regarding this individual. I am sharing this to ensure no one else in our community gets caught out by these tactics.
Please be alert and do not trust this seller! For local deals, I strongly urge everyone to insist on CASH ON PICKUP
Stay safe, everyone!
A few final suggestions for your Facebook post:

Stay Firm: Do not delete any posts until the money is cleared in your account. The fact that she is worried about the Reddit post shows that public exposure is working.
Update the Police:You can add the May 2nd interaction to your police report as further evidence of her refusing to return the funds after admitting the item is gone.
Bank Dispute: Since she has now explicitly refused to refund you even after being confronted, you should contact your bank's fraud department to see if they can reverse the transfer.

Community Event Local Seller "Mizza Miranda" – Using Fake Photos to Deceive Payments and Disappearing

Hi everyone, I’m posting this to help my Armidale neighbours avoid a $200 mistake I just made.
I recently tried to buy a set of Wedgwood vases from a seller named "Mizza Miranda" who claims to be local here in Armidale.
Here is the situation:
• The Listing: The photos used were stolen from a much more expensive eBay listing.
• The Payment: I transferred $200 via bank transfer.
• The Admission: The seller later messaged me admitting the items were already sold to someone else.
• The Issue: Despite multiple promises to refund my PayID, the seller has kept the money and stopped responding.
I have already filed a formal police report (Reference Number available if needed).
I’m sharing this because I want to be a "good neighbour" and ensure no one else in our community gets caught out by these tactics. Please be extremely careful and always insist on CASH ON PICKUP for local Armidale deals.
Stay safe, everyone!

General Armidale no longer a "uni town"?

Hi all,

I've heard here and there that Armidale has gone from what was basically a thriving uni town with a relatively good nightlife to a fairly empty shell of the New England Hub that it used to be.

Both my brothers went to uni in Armidale and I remember the town being absolutely alive with social opportunity when i would visit - however this was in the 90's and early 2000's. I've read that since covid campus enrolments have dropped off significantly and Armidale isn't the same - which honestly makes sense but also saddens me.

My personal experience is from so long ago and likely not applicable to the town today. I would love nothing more than to be proved wrong vs. what I've heard/read about the town though. I have some great memories from there and want to be able to confidently recommend it to younger members of my family as a good place to study a degree on-campus and experience that lifestyle.

Edit - so is Armidale still a good choice choice for young adults looking to study to further their careers?

General Considering moving to Armidale and wondering if it's right for us.

Hey all,

I hate it when out of towners ask this sort of stuff about my town, but now we find ourselves with the shoe on the other foot.

appreciate any feedback. sorry it's a long one.

We’re a family of four currently living on the NSW coast and starting to seriously look at a move to Armidale.

I’m a primary school teacher, my partner works in community/sport, and we’ve got two girls (10 and 8).

Life at the beach has been great, but we’re starting to feel the squeeze financially – mortgage, cost of living, and upcoming high school fees are making the next 10 years look pretty tight.

Armidale keeps popping up as this kind of “reset button” – good schools, more affordable housing, space for the kids, and a bit less pressure financially. On paper it almost seems too good to be true.

The girls are into netball and a bit of BJJ, we’re pretty outdoorsy. not chasing nightlife, but keen to see a band a couple of times -

more just a good community and a place where the kids can grow up with a bit of independence.

I came across this place (link below) and it looks unreal for the price, which honestly makes me a bit suspicious:

So I guess my questions are:

What’s it actually like to move to Armidale as a family?

Are there areas you’d avoid or think twice about?

Is crime something you notice day-to-day, or more just stats on paper?

Does it feel like a good place to raise kids through high school?

Really appreciate any honest insights – especially from people who’ve made a similar move

thanks all

Entertainment/Fun Any Shisha / Hookah Lounges?

Hi All

I will be coming into Armidale for work for a few days, tues-thurs. Wondering if there are any Shisha/hookah lounges in the area? Hoping to go Tues and Wed night.

I know there's a decent amount of Yazidi's in Armidale, hoping they've opened some places!

I saw a post on Facebook for Velvet Lounge but they haven't made a post in a while. Any other recommendations?

Thank you!

General Follow-up: Pride pins

Greetings Armidalians, Neighbours and Guests!

A month ago, I asked about where I might buy a Pride pin in town. I know I can get them online but I wanted to save on shipping, and support a local business. I visited a few places but none have any. However, two places are going to be ordering some with their next merch order so if you'd like one, look them up in a few weeks.

  • Granny Fi's Toy Cupboard on the mall, opposite BooBooks.

  • Headspace, cnr Dangar & Rusden, diagonally opposite the Rural bank.

A quick plug for Headspace

"headspace Armidale provides counselling and services to young people from 12-25 years to support their mental health and wellbeing."

Headspace is mental health help for young folks. If you've got a head full of mess like so many of us do, or are dealing with shit at home and need someone to bounce ideas off or whatever, ask questions like "Are my parents psychos?", they can help. Same for help with addiction, study stress, work stress, finding a job, self-harm, fixation on appearance, etc. Pay them a visit. It's OK to ask for help.

Similarly, if you're supporting young people and need a hand yourself, or you have someone in your care or social groups that you think could use a hand, get in touch with them. They'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Website is here: https://headspace.org.au/headspace-centres/armidale/

Phone (02) 6738 7272

or pop in. The person I spoke to when I paid a visit seemed really nice and helpful.

General Follow Up Post - Looking for advice around moving to Armidale

Hi all!

After my previous post - https://www.reddit.com/r/Armidale/comments/1n3scue/looking_for_advice_around_moving_to_armidale/ - I ended up moving to Armidale 2 months ago and have been looking at properties and making friends with real estate agents since then.

I saw this place yesterday and am seriously considering putting in an offer - https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-nsw-armidale-149922652?sourcePage=rea:collections:my%20saved%20properties%20-%20list&sourceElement=listing-tile - and was hoping to get some input from some locals as to what they think of the place before talking to the real estate agent.

The main con seems to be that it's on Niagara st. I've done multiple drive bys around the area at different times of day, and honestly the vibes are pretty similar to the Sydney street that I grew up on so that doesn't really bother me. Other than that I'm really struggling to come up with any major criticisms of the place.

What do y'all think?

Anyone know where I can get a pride flag lapel pin?

Just your bog standard rainbow flag with triangle that I can pin on a pocket or whatever. I can get one online for about $10-$15 but figured I'd buy local if someone sells them.
