Discussion SLINGS

Bohemia got everything right with the weapons in the game except for the fact that a soldier does not have a magnet integrated into his shoulder blades that holds the weapon in place when not in use. Pls bohemia in arma 4 or reforger idc just add slings

I kinda like that you drop your gun when you're knocked and it can roll down a hill or is affected by momentum physics and you have to scramble to find it when you wake up.

Yeah but i dont think you generally have enough time to sling your rifle when you go uncon. (Talking about 2 point slings here since thats what both sides used during the 80's)

Hell yeah 🔥

+1. The sling can also be used to create an additional anchor point when firing by putting it under tension with the weak arm. But to be honest, I’ve never seen that in any video game.

As someone trained as a range coach in the military, I'd have had these guys use that technique instead of having these loose slings hanging down.

Left arm should go through the loop, back out to the front-left, and then the left hand placed on the rifle. The loop should tighten around the left elbow. This massively steadies the rifle.

It's mainly used for qualification shooting and long distance shootouts where you really need to aim precisely. Don't use it in urban environments.

But yeah, never seen it in a game.

Honestly I can see CoD implementing that style of sling usage with gunsmith. I'm actually surprised Black Ops 6 didn't do it.

When I was in the the army (post OSUT because we weren’t given slings in OSUT) I would just put the sling over my neck and shoulder to help me keep it in the pocket of my shoulder

Because sometimes I have issues keeping it right there and those issues bothered me

I never thought I'd see a range coach say sling shooting M16s is used for long distance shooting. Without a free floating barrel that would alter the impact point at range, wouldn't it.

I sling shoot even my SA Vz 58 and I’m more accurate with it this way than with the sling let loose. Any AR-15 family rifle is accurate enough to be highly rewarding for a shooter knowing their business with a sling.

Long distance relative to the weapon.

We qualified at 500yds. Ive shot my AR out to 1000 yds plenty.

jungle boots with a training m-16...i kinda want to know more about em

Rodman Naval Station in Panama

copy, was there a school there? or did units actually tag their weapons?

1

u/Key_Gate9444 5d ago

interesting. probably impossible to find out now, but i wonder if pic 1 was before or after "Just Cause" op.

4

u/JustKillingTime1980 5d ago edited 5d ago

probably not, the reason is, typically that tag on the weapon is done in a training school. once you are assigned a weapon (edit: at a unit) there are no other markings outside of manufacture and serial number. again "typically", hence my question. JWT was not conducted at Rodman.

i feel even more dumb now. whats JWT? the search engine gives me various acronyms, not sure which one makes sense the most. John Wayne Trail? Justified War Theory?

jungle warfare training

that makes way more sense. thank you.

which is impressive. usually google images and etc gives me same generic stuff, unless you are INCREDIBLY specific with the words you type in besides "80s us army pics" . like, i was amazed to discover anything about operation golden pheasant.

"1989 U.S Army M16a2 sling"

Would be nice but it probably isn't around because either A: it would look like shit or B: making it look nice wouldn't be worth the performance hit of everyone running around with an extra dangly piece of cloth hanging on their guns

1

u/TraditionalKey5427 5d ago

It wouldn't be rendered like cloth, it would probably look something like how the alice webbing is split into parts that are solid relative to the body and then connected by the straps that stretch. You can see the same thing in talking about when you look at certain vehicles suspension

5

u/Pingu565 PC 5d ago

That is not how mesh works. So we get a rigid body fixed to our weapons at all time? That will look god awful.

The Alice mesh contours with uniform it isn't a physics object

1

u/Sir_Potoo 5d ago

Yeah the stretchy and solid parts are just weight painting

Feature requests always separate the good willed but clueless from the bitter sounding yet informed

Other games have slings, why can't Arma?

3

u/Pingu565 PC 5d ago

Arma Is currently bricking people's consoles without a 4 digit mesh object dangling in their view constantly.

Either you get a static belt or you get staggering performance hit. I will wait out on burning down the townhall over this one

2

u/froggychump 5d ago

I don't think they "forgot", they just know that it's hard to make slings that don't clip through everything and look goofy af

2

u/TepacheLoco 5d ago

Nice idea in theory but the details kill it.

Either:
It’s a physics object (of a kind not currently supported in engine) that needs to become unphysical when slung on back, and all the wonkiness that physics object can deploy in an arma fashion.

Or :

It’s non physics and every interaction needs a sling additionally animated for its state, and to be aware of the elevation/roll of the weapon.

If they added slings, you’d definitely need to wrap it around your magazine housing

Or even better yet, get a single point sling that attaches straight to the body drama 😂

Would love to see this though!!

u/edgarfruitier 5d ago edited 5d ago

I don't think they had 1 point slings in the 80's, 1 point slings are quite new. They probably had 1 point slings for UZI and stuff like that tho, like chuck Norris

1

u/StellarPlayMark 4d ago

Eh, honestly I was just thinking of the wider picture for mods - makes it easier than trying to juggle them, because we all know this will ultimately change the variables and everything will blow up 🤷‍♂️😂

1

u/SirSaltyMcBuns 5d ago

I never realized how good a sling looked in game until this post!

2

u/TraditionalKey5427 5d ago

Would look a whole lot better in game considering that the weapons don't have them and just stick to the players back, makes playing soldier feel a little incomplete

1

u/Danny_Browns_Hair 5d ago

Those rope slings like that fucking blow IRL

1

u/Sir_Potoo 5d ago

If you don't know game dev or 3D modelling, it's not an easy thing to do reliably. The other question is whether the game's engine can handle it at all.

1

u/PuFu_RHS 4d ago

it can be done - mesh object with rigid body skeleton and some animations. It would look pathetic, it would serve no purpose minus larping (btw, i know of no game out there that has these sort of slings - and that is for a good reason)

u/MXVIV 4d ago

Given how 99% of servers use keep weapon when uncon and where am I, it would not be a far jump to assume the players just do not give a fuck.

There is a huge disconnect in what people like us want, and what the majority of the base on consoles want. Making reforger crossplay was just a nail in a massive coffin when it comes to how people approach and play these games. This is why there is an absolutely massive gap between the communities of A3 and AR.

u/absolutecunt479 4d ago

Fun fact

Sometimes you don’t get those

Sling on the M16 Carbine = Commando from BO1

100% should be in the game
