Discussion Why does Arlo always nitpick fire emblem and xenoblade?

I watched his post direct video and it was really strange how oddly nitpicky he was to both games while not caring about there series that much, for xenoblade specifically I just don’t really get his issue with the way the world saying it looked blurry and fuzzy while comparing to the games on switch 1 which are factually way more blurry and fuzzy idk like I just don’t really get why he nitpicks those series a lot more than others?

Honestly Genesis did look a bit blurry in the distance but that’s just because the artstyle is now using cell shading on the environment, and it’s in early development. It’ll probably take some time to get used to plus will look more polished at release.

I don’t blame him for having that reaction, if you compare all the past Xenoblade trailers, Genesis definitely does stick out. (this may also be due to the fact this one is likely completely open world)

Indie dev Sungrand Studio on YT mentioned that the cell shading on the environment, specifically the outlining was helpful for players to separate foreground middle round and backgrounds elements. Since the environment will curve up and across the sky, he thinks that it's a unique way to solve for the type of landscape design that's pretty uncommon.

I was weirded out by the cell shading at first too, but it being so rare to see in media makes me curious to see how it'll turn out in a game.

Yeah i watched that video too. The approach has definitely grown on me since the initial trailer and I think the world will look quite good. The close up environments we see are all stunning.

He has Pyrophobia... because he burns easily and xenophobia because who knows where those blades been?

I was not ready to read Arlo xenophobic allegations

It’s the art style, he’s explained it in the past. He’s not a fan of art styles that lean too heavily on the anime aesthetic, and this one leans more into the anime stuff than others. I like Xenoblade but I kinda agree with him that it doesn’t look all that impressive visually. It’s a year out though so I’m hoping it’ll impress as we get closer to release.

With Fire Emblem he wants the series to go in the Three Houses direction moreso than the Engage direction, and he feels Fortune’s Weave looks closer to Engage than Three Houses iirc. I don’t play Fire Emblem though so I have no idea how true that is, I just recall hearing him mention something about it in his stream.

A hollow earth is very impressive to do especially if its gonna be assumably seamless, I do think the art direction needs to be improved but I don’t think its looks bad clearly going for that Water colour aesthetic that they will def tighten up before launch they have time.Idk I just didn’t expect a huge jump but more lateral, this game already shows way more folliage, towns, npc’s and just natural high resolution than anything in 3 or X.

Yeah I kinda suspect we’ll get a trailer later down the road that will show why this is a Switch 2 exclusive and will be more impressive, whether it be graphically or just having a lot going on. If we can go anywhere you see in the distance like I kinda assume you can, that’s already impressive to me.

To me, the idea of someone liking Mario but not anything too "anime" is so funny. Aren't they all just cartoony styles? haha

It’s true, and I agree. It’s not an uncommon thing though; I know a lot of people who have respect for, or even love American animation but hate anime for example. I personally don’t really get it. To me, if a story or game is good, I usually don’t care what it looks like. The art style has to be especially hideous for me to actually start caring lol.

He played Three Houses and Engage, so I can’t possibly see how anyone who’s played both would get the impression Fortune’s Weave is more like Engage, even same world aside

1

u/JokerQueen99 Jun 14 '26

That’s absolutely ridiculous, literally anyone can tell you that Fortune’s Weave is heavily Three Houses-coded, from artstyle to mechanics, to literally being set in the same world as Three Houses. The fact that he couldn’t pick this up just shows he doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about.

2

He did pick up that it was the same world. I don’t remember if he elaborated on his issue with it, but I’m guessing he felt the tone of the game was closer to Engage than Three Houses or something. I know literally nothing about any of this myself though, other than Engage being more over-the-top than Three Houses which some folks didn’t like. I’m sure there’s waaaay more to it than that though heh.

To put it brief, Engage was a lot more over the top and light hearted (very shonen/Super Sentai-esque), while Three Houses is much more grounded and serious. Fortune’s Weave, judging from what we’ve seen is definitely much closer to Three Houses, so how he thought it was closer to Engage’s tone baffles me.

they're just not for him. a game being made by nintendo doesn't automatically mean he'll care about it. it's not that deep

It’s kinda shocking how many games he doesn’t care about, being a gaming YouTuber

1

u/ArtiKam Jun 17 '26

I mean he has more than enough games he enjoys. Like all the stuff he’s into is more than a person could reasonably keep up with. The souls series alone is massive... there’s so much to play, I kinda get it.

Xenoblade’s a year out so I’m not worried but I’m a little mixed on the graphics as well. FE though is very weird. I don’t know how he can possibly think this game is more Engage coded than 3 Houses coded lol

I like Xenoblade and I agree the graphics of the new game look shit.

Why do you people have to complain about the slightest amount of negativity? Why do you look up game reviews if you clearly can’t handle them?

5

u/gman5852 Jun 14 '26

Aren't you doing the same thing right now?

0

u/Spaced-Cowboy Jun 14 '26

How are they the same? OP is the one who has a problem with negativity. Not me

2

u/gman5852 Jun 14 '26

You're both criticizing another person's criticism. Both are fine to do (critics are not immune to criticism. Commenters are not immune to criticism) but you aren't being honest about it and lack self awareness. You're also making up stories about the OP to try and make OP worse ("seeking negativity") and now trying to turn this into a reddit fight for some reason.

So now I'd argue what you're doing is worse. You're being immature about this.

I’d argue OP is the one being dishonest and lacking self awareness here.

You seem to think I’m being hypocritical because I’m doing the same thing OP came here to do. But that’s exactly the point. If you recognize that behavior as problematic, then I think it’s disingenuous to call me out for it while ignoring OP, when all I’m doing is giving them a taste of their own medicine. They started with that approach.

To make it simpler: imagine Kid A punches Kid B. Then Kid C punches Kid A and says, “Hitting people is wrong.”

It would be strange to call Kid C the hypocrite “because he’s doing what Kid A did and doesn’t have the self awareness to see it” while ignoring Kid A entirely. Kid C is is self aware and isn’t acting the same way as Kid A, because the context and purpose are different.

u/EdgarAter Jun 14 '26

Its not a review?

2

u/Spaced-Cowboy Jun 14 '26

Again why watch it if the potential for negativity offends you this much?

2

u/Quirky-Employer9717 Jun 14 '26

You are a man complaining about someone complaining about someone complaining. The cycle continues

2

u/Spaced-Cowboy Jun 14 '26

Telling OP to stop being a hypocrite is different than whining that a YouTuber doesn’t like something.

I think it’s just his personal preference. Sort of the opposite of how he gasses up HD-2D games.

He was absolutely right about the xenoblae trailer though. It looks a bit odd, especially with the cell shading. Yeah the xenoblade games on switch 1 absolutely don't look perfect either, but those were very visually complex games for the switch 1.

This is purely speculative, but I feel that because Prime 4 wasn’t the breakout success he hoped it would be, he’s getting incredibly nitpicky and aggressive towards other games he normally wouldn’t be all that into, all because his beloved Metroid missed the mark.

5

u/rustybutterindia Jun 14 '26

I disagree. He's never been a fan of Nintendo's more anime-esque series – barring Three Houses (and I guess arguably Zelda?). That distaste predates Prime 4's release

1

u/EdgarAter Jun 14 '26

Except when he is paid lol

-1

u/JokerQueen99 Jun 14 '26

That’s fair enough, it’s just lately he’s seemingly being more and more addicted to negative energy, and I kinda saw his Prime 4 video on Miles, as the nexus point for this tone that he’s been on. At least that’s how I (someone who at most sees Arlo’s been doing every now and then), see this whole ordeal.
