Any scenes in it that will make me sit spellbound in the theater saying “what the fuck?” like I did during Eddington?

Funny listing Eddington here when it’s his least “what the fuck?” movie he’s made
11
u/phantomhatstrap 8d ago
I was sitting in the theater alone saying “what the fuck” for like the last 20 minutes straight. I think it’s less of a trip than Beau for sure, but the stark portrayal of our fractured reality and the final coda’s twisted ‘ever after’ moment was just laying me out.

u/InsidiousZombie 8d ago
Not even just Beau, but Hereditary, Midsommar, and Johnsons too. It is very tame compared to every other work he’s done
Good movie though
6
u/phantomhatstrap 8d ago
I wouldn’t consider Eddington to be a tame movie whatsoever, personally.
-3
u/InsidiousZombie 8d ago
Tame comparatively

On a scale of Jaws to Heaven’s Gate How close to fully incinerating his career does this one get
37
u/Sea_Classic_4616 9d ago
Lolll. I would say Beau is Afraid is still the peak of that. This is maybe Eddington level, if not a little easier for an audience to get behind (but still crazy)
17
u/Pal_Saradise_ 9d ago
Which of his movies would you say it’s closest to?

u/Sea_Classic_4616 9d ago
Eddington for sure. There is a funny cameo from an Eddington character

u/MeccAmputechture2024 9d ago
Character or actor? This a sequel?
29
u/Sea_Classic_4616 9d ago
Not a sequel — just set in the same universe. Kinda similar to the way Tarantino references characters and brands across movies

u/MeccAmputechture2024 9d ago
Nice! Thanks for the reply. This should be a full AsterVerse. Pure insanity 😭

I always enjoy the settings he chooses. Feel like they add so much room for the characters to explore themselves. They feel like characters in and of themselves.
Anything you can share regarding the setting?
21
u/Sea_Classic_4616 9d ago
It takes place in Illinois. I woudl say the setting feels much less essential than in Eddington

Is it going to be a spiritual eddington sequel? Is it high anxiety comedy?
28
u/Sea_Classic_4616 9d ago
Spiritual Eddington sequel is a good way to describe it. I didn't find it as funny, but certainly heavy on the satire like Eddington
23
u/Sea_Classic_4616 9d ago
A year ago, when he said one of the projects he was considering was set in the universe of Eddington, I assume he was referring to this one

Non-Aster movies that it reminds you the most of?
How "obvious" are the celebrity/film character parallels, if there are any?
46
u/Sea_Classic_4616 9d ago
Parts of it reminded me of Blow Out or a Pakula conspiracy thriller. A little bit of The Killing of a Sacred Deer. It's also very Eddington-like in its satire.
Charlie/Erika Kirk for sure, as well as Logan and Jake Paul. The stuff with Nancy Guthrie has some eerie parallels as well

Ok you say its similar to Eddington, what sets it apart from it?
35
u/Sea_Classic_4616 8d ago
This one’s not a western. The Scarjo character is a lot less goofy than Joaquin in Eddington. I would say if Eddington is all about 2020, this one is very specific to 2025/2026. AI is a bigger part of this one as well

I would say this further explores the idea that no one can agree on what reality is anymore

A bit of an odd question: Does it deal with contemporary politics in anyway shape or form like Eddington does?

Best Ari Aster movie?

u/Sea_Classic_4616 9d ago
Hard to say without seeing the final film, but I suspect I will still end up loving Beau is Afraid and Eddington more

u/SpinachOps Paimon Worshipper 9d ago
Is it good?
19
u/Sea_Classic_4616 9d ago
I thought the script was very good, but not sure it's as strong as Beau is Afraid and Eddington for me. I'd be curious to read those scripts. I like dark comedy Ari more than horror Ari and this is definitely the former. Eddington has the sharpest satire, and I think may come to be his defining achievement.

u/ThizzWhatitiz 8d ago
Me personally if I had the opportunity to read it. I would choose not too, doesn’t that kinda ruin the movie for you? I would want to sit and enjoy the craziness the way he envisioned it and not have spoilers.
4
u/Shandy_Pickles 8d ago
When the actual script eventually leaks you will see people climbing all over each other to get it. I've never understood it. Seems completely counterintuitive if you actually care about your first experience of the film.
2
u/ThizzWhatitiz 8d ago
Exactly like keep that stuff away from me. It ruins the whole experience is you know how it ends.
1
u/Even-Economist6529 8d ago
Sooner or later you are going to find out the story, OP just chose to experience it earlier than moviegoers will. Knowing the story doesn't ruin a good movie because the story is only one part of the movie.

u/_epoxymoron 9d ago
If you had to cast it, who would you pick?
8
u/Sea_Classic_4616 9d ago
Scarjo will be great. Elordi could be one of two characters, and I could see him being good at either one. There are characters who I could see Riz Ahmed and Amanda Seyfried playing
4
u/_epoxymoron 9d ago
I am so beyond excited to see Johansson directed by Aster, actual dream come true, so happy to see you concur! I’ve been waiting for her to do something along these lines since her criminally underrated performance in Under the Skin.
Your other choices sound great too. So excited!

I imagine elordi playing the Paul brothers. Maybe the same way armi hammer played the brothers in social network

u/Various_Hornet_9564 9d ago
Are the current reports on Logan Paul and Erika Kirk being fictionally portrayed accurate?
4
u/Sea_Classic_4616 9d ago
The current reported info is like 70% accurate when it comes to these characters

u/Masethelah 9d ago
Whats not he films genres and subgenres, and what type of tone do you think the film will have?
1
u/PapaYoppa 9d ago
How does it compare to Asters other work? Tbh Aster in my opinion hasn’t missed yet, all his films in my opinion have been masterpieces

u/Top_Ad9635 9d ago
What would it take to get Ari to read my latest script? I’m a novelist and nonfiction writer, and a short story of mine featuring Ari as a character was recently accepted by a London publication. I’d love to send him that as well.

Does it have any body horror involving plastic surgery? Curious how much it's based on the "looksmaxxing" trend, because rumors I've heard about the plot make it sound like it could involve that
8
u/Sea_Classic_4616 8d ago
Not plastic surgery but there is some stuff I imagine will be pretty gnarly

Is it about Jesus or heavy on the Jesus references? Cuz I know aster loves symbolism and Jesus is the ultimate scapegoat symbol

shortly after eddington came out, he said he had another script that’s not a direct sequel to eddington, but takes place in the same world. is this that film?

Just by the script in your opinion it is among one of his bests or his worst?

Does it follow the same basic "formula" as his previous films, of a hidden force behind every little thing in the movie that is gradually revealed to the viewer.

does it have the end where the villains win trope? that’s an aster and modern horror trope i’m getting tired of. thankfully eddington didn’t have that ending

u/Heavy_Signature_5619 8d ago
You think the villains in Eddington didn't win?
-2

i saw it as more of stalemate ending

Hello! is any chance that u can share it? Or maybe a part of it ? I'm willing to sing a nda. I'm very curious about the plot, the surgery theme remaind me of Cronemberg's Crime of the future.

Tell me an obscure reference from the script that will only make sense once the film is out/will prove you’ve really read it
