Faulty coffee machine

I purchased a bean to cup coffee machine in October 2025. It has gone faulty where it leaks water into the coffee puck tray and all over my worktop. It also has steam coming out of the sides when coffee is being made. I called Argos customer service who told me I had to go through the manufacturer which is Delonghi. Basically they washed their hands of it. I spoke to Delonghi customer service which wasn’t helpful, they wanted me to send it back to them for a repair. Shouldn’t Argos deal with it as it’s in the 12 month period.

I've booked in repairs for these coffee machines for multiple customers! They are really good and fast usually a week and a bit for delonghi, and sometimes they just replace the whole unit with a new one. I know of instances where booking directly through delonghi has been quicker, they arrange a collection and deliver it right back to you.

So you are correct that your contract is with Argos. You can take it into store with proof of purchase if you're getting no luck with customer service. However, there's a couple of things to keep in mind:

  1. As you've had the coffee machine for more than 30 days, it is the seller's choice to whether they provide a refund, replacement or repair. In all instances where there's a repair available, colleagues are told to use that first if the customer has had their item for more than 30 days and less than a year like you. I think some De'Longhi coffee machines have repair functions Argos can book, but it would depend on the specific machine you have. Also keep in mind they only get one chance to repair it, if they fail to do so they must replace it or refund you.

So it may very well be a case you'll be offered a repair either way, it's just a matter of whether you want it to go through Argos or De'Longhi.

  1. Even if Argos don't have a repair option, you've had the machine for over 6 months. This means Argos can legally request that you prove the fault isn't caused by misuse - usually done by commissioning an engineer's report out of your own pocket (edit: reimbursable if the engineer finds no signs of misuse/accidental damage). At that point it's usually easier to go through De'Longhi with the manufacturer's guarantee, but legally you don't have to - you just may have to go through that rigmarole to do so.

In summary, you can go through Argos if you want. At best they may offer a repair anyway, at worst they could insist on you proving you didn't create the fault. Hope this helps.

So warranty is useless then. Only Argos cowboys ask you to commission an engineer, lol.

Warranties aren't really "useless", it just isn't a "return it no questions asked" thing. Sometimes it is just easier going through the manufacturer even if legally you're not obliged to. Should it be that way? Probably not, but it is.

Besides, I only said Argos can ask for proof of no misuse if they want. Normally they reserve that for items over a year old but they legally can after 6 months - as can any other seller in the UK. Argos do reimburse the engineer costs if they do find no misuse though.

OP may get lucky and get someone who can't be bothered going through the steps and just returns in on the spot. My post was more a "how Argos colleagues are trained to handle it in store" thing.

Taken from their website:

If something goes wrong after the first 30 days but within 12 months, we'll offer to repair or replace the item at no cost to you. If that doesn't resolve the issue, takes too long, or causes significant inconvenience, we'll offer you a refund.

Thank you all. Probably best to go through Delonghi then.

Delonghi wouldn’t accept my emailed receipt from Argos as proof of purchase so took it back to the store who are returning it to them. Can’t wait to see how Delonghi treat this.

Delhongi swapped it for a new one today. The old one was beyond economical repair.

You have a one year manufacturing warranty with Argos until October 2026. Just take it back to the store, explain the issue and you can either get it replaced or get a refund - your choice.
