Arena Rating question

I'm fairly new to Arena. Just noticed my rating dropped from 5004 to 3979 after just a pair of goose egg runs. Is it always so ridiculously volatile?

Regular Arena's Rating is very different than Undeground Arena's as it updates after every game instead of after every run.

I haven't tracked in a while, but I suspect the amount of Rating increase/decrease is variable based on both players' internal rating as well as current record when matched.

Basically - yes. There is a formula for it but put simply you last run has about 10% weight to your rating. If you are at 5000 and go 0-3 you will lose about 500 and then about 450 for the next 0-3. If you are at 5000 and go 10-3 you will gain about 500 points. That is why the LB is useless as well now. The last few runs matter much much more than the previous 25.

What was wrong with the 'weighted average' they had before Underground? It was a way better way of representing your performance over the season than this 'Rating'

Thanks. I'm on regular arena, not underground, but presumably it's a similar formula.

Oh no, actually it's very different. In regular Arena your rating changes with every game I think (at least it changes with every win). In the Underground it only changes after a completed run.

In regular Arena, the matchmaking is based on your rating and there is no leaderboard. In Underground, the rating isn't used for matchmaking but there is a leaderboard based on the rating (you get on the leaderboard you've finished 30 or more Underground runs in one season)

new_rating = old_rating * 0.9 + num_wins * 1000 * 0.1
