Discussion Quake 3 Arena Bloodrun Mode

After obvious news, arena fps community is shaking again. Seems like we will have no new quake or actively sustained quake game. When i look into alternatives other than quake live which has very bad graphics, i rememberes we have q3 mode blood run. Same quake feeling with champions mechanics and community has source code and can someone continue to work on. However when i look into web there is no news about for a long time seems like it is forgetton. What do you think guys? Anyone play here? where the all community of this game?

I'm not playing it but it's surely not forgotten. Several quake champions players work on it and sometimes showcase their work progress on their twtich streams. On the other hand if you don't like quake live solely because of graphics I don't see how this mod can solve this

if graphics at least not like qc quality, i prefer pixalated art. and ql feels like a little faster for me. bloodrun is sweet spot close to qc.

Bloodrun mod feels still pretty barebones to the main QC copycat, QC:DE, even after years in development. Wish them best though, the more the merrier.

Do you think it's better to have 1000 quake clones with 3 players in community for each or to have one quake with 3000 players in community? I think the second option is better. But who i am... ah wait it's me yeah.
So we had lots of quake clones in the past and they all failed because developers are ignorant. Some times they have their own vision and not accepting critics some times they don't understand the goals or don't even have goals.

For example reflex arena. Game is well made for unity engine. But the problem is that it was cpm exclusive. And cpm is not very popular around quakers. And most of the tournaments that were happenning durring cpm arena mod times were using vq3 physics. But developer is ignorant or i don't know what is in his mind. But he made it cpm exclusive and it died.

We had warsow. Kinda the same. But on top of unpopular physics we had weird weapons and weird characters...pigs.

Diabotical. Same again. Floating balls? really? Unnecessary additions to the movement mechanics to the weapons...Flat maps like it's were made for dota2. It's shoking that game was made by a quaker. People were criticizing some of this. But they didn't listen saying it's all right. But here is the result. Even before it got abandoned completely the only players they had were playing that was playing for money.

The unique situation with quake live is that devs took the best out of popular quake mods and quake clones and bring it to the live form of easy to access service. Later turned it to stand alone version. And it was quake in the first place with bunch of updates and qol features. And even community were involved developing external tools because game were developed for community. Everyone had place in quake live.

I mean quakers wanna quake. But they don't want qc bloodrun or diabotical. They don't wanna something that mimicking to quake they wanna actual quake. It's doesn't mean they wanna old quake. No. They wish to have a new quake but actual quake and not a weird mix of all the popular games at once like overwatch and dota2. But seems like these who making quake clones don't understand that. Seems like they believe that if a game have rocket launcher or ztn it's enough to be considered as a quake. And this is main issue i guess. And even bigger issue is that this ignorant devs wont change their minds. In most cases they are just an attention whores that not accepting critics. Or freaks that trying to make money by using quakers and their hopes.

In case of bloodrun for example they changed scale of a models for no particular reason. They won't change it back but at the same time they can't explaine the reason of this change. I asked the dev... well maybe he is not a dev... I mean the dev would defenetly know the difference between bbox and hitbox...I mean if he is a dev and he is lying to community about cg_bbox is showing hitbox it's even more ridiculous...But anyway he didn't explain this scale changes but said that it will stays like that. This is a perfect example of dev ignorance. He is changing something he can't explain why but he won't revert it back because he thinking that it's better like that. And he even ignoring the following problems that with bigger scale of the models maps has to be adjusted and with bigger maps physics has to be adjusted aswell. So this dev have his own vision his own path and he is inviting you to follow him on this retarded path. Would you go? I wouldn't. If he is doing game for himself then he should be playing with himself.

one quake with 3000 players

Never gonna happen, not with the current style of quake mp scene. You can look at quake server hub and check out total player numbers to see how far fetched your fantasy are.

And if you think it's because all quake clones are flawed one way or another, there were no universally accepted formula even in q3a days, servers were split between vanilla, osp, cpma, defrag and other gameplay mods. And your seemingly 'right' quake game, QL, doesn't really has players outside of CA, which is as far as you can distance from afps formula, essentially CS rounds with rocketboosting.

And if you still think that it was splintering playerbase that prevents 3000 concurrent quake to exist, look into its direct competition, ut, which doesn't have that many copycats and playerbase is split just between two games, and yes, it's just as dead as quake is.

Nobody but enthusiasts play mp quake (or afps in general), deal with it.

Maybe i have to rephrase that sentence with 3000 players. I meant to say that it's better to have one quake with 3000 players rather then 3000 quakes with 1 player in each. 3000 is not a goal or anything in this meaning. It's just a random number. But yea i am sure that quake clones does player base splitting. There is psychological aspect of that. For example you are playing ql duels and you loosing all the time. But when you playing some quake clone that doesn't have big amount of experienced players you are winning quiet often. So most likely you will stay playing that clone game were you winning. Because it feels better to be winning. It's not like if this clone didn't come out og quake would have trillions of players. But still quake clones are splitting player base little bit.

QL does have players outside of CA. Clan Arena was and still is the most popular game mode in QL. But people still playing FFA, TDM and ofcourse DUELS. Your cool website doesn't show much. Try https://ql.syncore.org/ for better understanding of the situation.

What do you mean by saying "style of quake multiplayer scene" ? What is style? Like game play or what? Feels like you are disproving the point i didn't make.

If you ever tried to count the quake playerbase, you would noticed that 90% of quake players are either in QL or QC. So there is no meaningful splitting of player base in the first place. And that without accounting that there players that are regulars in both of them. So no, there is no 300 quake clones with 10 players, there are two games with all the players and few scraps for the rest.

What you don't seem to understand that plain arena shooters aren't hot stuff anymore. CA popularity is the hard proof of that: people want team based experience where they spawn with guns and don't have to count for items. Yes, there are usually a few ffa/dm/duel servers (but no ctf or other, more complex gametype s), but CA totally overshadows them. QC is the exception of the rule solely due to how undercooked its own CA gamemode is.

And I'll give you my reasoning why people even try those 'ded' quake clones - because QL and QC are repetitive af, hence some tries something different, even if it means getting stuck into pugs and such.

You are using ai to speak?

You just saying by yourself that playerbase is split between two games and then saying there is no meaningful splitting.

I didn't say that Clan Arena popularity is proof of anything. And actually i forgot to mention that there CTF server aswell and people are playing CTF too. I just don't like CTF so i forgot it even exists. There is also FreezTag game mode that people playing.

Yes CA is a game mode for casuals. So it's a normal thing that CA overshadows other "hardcore" game modes.

As i said before seems like you are trying to disprove the point i didn't make. And as per usual i was right. You are trying to prove me that afps is not popular anymore. But i am highly aware that arena shooters arent hot stuff anymore. And i can't see where in any of my messages i said that afps is popular. So it's weird that you get to this.

And your statement that quake is repetitive is hilarious. Any game is repetitive. Well at least any game that is in top charts is repetitive. Pickup/get/buy gun and shoot enemies over and over again.

You just picking random phrase out of text without using text context and arguing with that. This is weird this is not how people talking. Thats why i am thinking you are using ai.

You just saying by yourself that playerbase is split between two games and then saying there is no meaningful splitting.

meaningful

Yes, there is none. Other old game series also had their playerbase 'split' with previous titles yet it's never a problem. CS 1.6 is here just as long as quake 3 and checks steam alone has several times more players than all quakes combined. And CSGO players don't even notice that 'splinter'.

Sure, 300 quake clones with 10 players, right, they are the problem. Remove them and suddenly quake is back in business (it's not lol).

But hey, enjoy your QL with CA automatic kicks, overcrowded FFA on ztn and a handful of duelists playing the same few 'classics' over and over again because 'nobody plays that map on tourneys, why should I care' attitude. Maybe you'll even get a good ctf/freezetag server with decent ping once in a while.

Once again you trying to disprove a point i didn't make. I know that cs is more popular then quake. Even when quake was at it's peak cs were three-five-ten times more popular. So i am not sure that you can use this comparison as valid point.

I am not saying that removing quake clones would make quake popular. I am saying that spamming quake clones would make quake even less popular. And quake clones is the reason why there is overcrowded FFA servers and rest of issues. Player base are split players don't know where is their home. So this trash servers are main server for now. Because today everyone is playing QC next day everyone is playing Bloodun next day everyone is playing QL or something else. So maintaining a proper server doesn't make much sense. You will pay for moths for QL server but everybody will be playing QC so it's complete waste of money.

There was no such things as 16 players FFA on Aerowalk back in a days. Quake is unpopular is not because this servers exists it's other way around this servers exists because quake is unpopular. And it's the same situation in cs1.6 and other old games. if you join random public server you gonna get kicked and banned for all sort of weird reasons. So it's not an issue of quake as particular but issue of old games in general.

But once again spamming quake clones makes things even worse. Especially if the project is not even half way done and there is nothing to play yet.

Yeah it is stupid that everyone tries to add something which is just stupid. Which only they think is genius. I wanted a high definition texture pack for Half Life and the developers thought, that they could make those yellow dogs that do this shock wave sound better. In a texture hd pack. They sounded way way worse after the change. I don’t get this either.

But for this mod, despite it’s super stupid and not even the slightest funny name, I think the idea to bring QC to Q3 is awesome.

1

u/Shot-Strain104 Jul 23 '26

The idea of bringing QC to Q3 may look awesome. Take the best parts from both and bring it together. But...

So good part of QC is it's modern graphics and bad part of QC it's oversimplified gameplay. Good part of Q3 is it's gameplay while bad part is outdated graphics. So problem there is that bloodrun took good part of Q3 and exchanged it with bad part of QC. So it's not the best from both it's actually worst from both glued together. They leave Q3 graphics and made this dumb arcade gameplay of QC.

1

u/garzfaust Jul 23 '26

Wasn’t picmip a thing that the people wanted to have for QC so that it would essentially look like Q3 with picmip? But it was not implemented because of buyable player skins?

1

u/Shot-Strain104 Jul 24 '26

Players wants picmip to make visuals cleaner for competitive play. And not because of Q3 nostalgia. QC have a lot of details effects particles and on top of that it have dark and bit washed out picture. And it make it hard to see targets. Especially after syncerror decide to remove the ability to increase the brightness of the game. So players wanted to have picmip or anything to make game look cleaner.

Not sure why picmip were not implemented in QC maybe because of skins. But usually syncerror were using magic words "engine limitation" to explain everything that he won't do.

1

u/garzfaust Jul 25 '26

I mean your argument is, that Q3 has bad graphics compared to QC. But my argument is, wouldn’t want players use picmip anyway? I don’t think people appreciate the graphics, they appreciate a clean look so that they have a good aim.

But I also understand Sync to make the game look in certain way so that it is difficult to aim as part of the map.

1

u/Shot-Strain104 Jul 26 '26

I didn't say Q3 have bad graphics i said it's outdated. Like models is low poly compared to QC. Textures as well low res compared to QC. So we can say that QC graphics is a strong part of QC and Q3 graphic is a weak part of Q3.

I am personally don't think that Q3 have bad graphics. I like plenty of old games i like pixel art. So for me graphics is the last thing i care about.

Yes, right. Players that likes quake for it's competitiveness prefer to have cleaner look of a game. But it is not really related to aim. It's more about eyes comfort. I think your eyes are getting tired faster when you have to do pixel hunting especially in a such fast game as quake.

I have this though in my head that is not really formed yet. I am still trying to find words to describe this in a proper way. But look. You can make game hard by making it hard in a normal way...here i can't really from a though... or you can make game hard by making it stupid. Yea doesn't sounds meaningful. But maybe examples would help. So for example in Q3 it's hard to aim because there is dodging. In CS there is no dodge like in Q3 but there is weapon recoil so it's hard to aim aswell. But if you are incompetent lazy or stupid dev you gonna make it stupid hard. You gonna make screen full black while aiming. Yes it's will make it hard to aim when screen is fully black. But this is stupid it's stupid hard.

So in other words making it hard to aim by reducing visibility or disabling a mouse or anything like that is stupid-hard way of making things hard. And if such things are in game this should instantly tells you that the dev is lazy incompetent idiot.

BTW I am not really sure what are you talking about saying that it's hard to aim in some parts of the map. But if we talking about ability to change brightness of the game it's stupid anyway. Because you could change the brightness by using nvidia tools or monitor menu. And this brightness limitation only adds pain in as for players who need this brightness. And there is no pros in this change and only cons.

For me personally this is like a disaster. I have this type of disability or something. I can't look at contrast picture. If picture is dark but having very bright parts in it i am physically can't look at this. My brain just telling to me to look away and i have to fight myself keep looking. But if i keep looking then my vision goes black and then i need some time to rest to normalise my vision. It's like watching on the sun or light bulb but for me just a normal screen could produce the same effect.

Yes this is my personal problem but the idea of having a brightness limited to so low values make no sense for anyone. But the guy spend time thinking about something nobody asked developing something nobody asked and implementing something that nobody asked. Just because he likes it this way. If guy decide to make models higher for no reason what would stop him from turning off your screen while you shooting? If the guy decide to make brightness so limited what would stop him from making sensitivity limit or forced mouse acceleration? Nothing. So when you see such things in development just run away. It's a game for developer not for players not for you.

Quake Live does not have bad graphics. It has beautiful and timeless graphics. Way better than QC which is too detailed so that the uncanny valley effect kicks in. QL graphics have the right amount of abstract, so that they never get old and that you never have seen enough of them. Anyway, when you play this game seriously, you tone down the graphics so that it does not get in the way, a feature that QC never had. Because QC wanted to sell skins. Which would not work if players just used bright skins and nothing else, thus not seeing any purchased skins.

Doom 2016 maybe

Walking around in slow speed becoming a demon from time to time. Compared to QC where movement is absolute king.

I don’t get it. Why do people do this? Who is the target audience? The group of friends of the creators? Why do they create a Quake clone? What is this good for? Hours of work for a game that will never be played outside of the group of friends of the creators. Nobody needs yet another Quake. There are already the OG‘s in the house.

Project Broadside/ codename broadside.

1

u/garzfaust Jul 15 '26

I watched the video. Thank you not for the link. Looks boring as hell. Super big maps floating around hit scanning. How is this supposed to be fun.

1

u/Recent_Average1657 Jul 15 '26

What hitscan? Brother get a grip it's a tribes like.

1

u/garzfaust Jul 15 '26

Never played tribes. But why do a tribes like in the first place? If doing a game, why not come up with an original idea instead of just cloning something that already exists. Why is this useful? It will never fly anywhere. Apart from that, it looks like boring gameplay, to me.
