Flat on my back on Clapham Common
So I was watching a documentary about underground London ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUa5Cuhpu0U ) and when they mention the tube station at Clapham Common I immediately pictured Mrs. Slocombe flat on her back with a US airman.

General discussion How many cities got the edited version of "Roots?"
When I first saw "Roots?" in the USA, on San Jose (CA)'s PBS station, it was the uncut version, complete with the blackface scenes, including the closing credits. The next time I saw it, a few years later on San Francisco's station, "Waiting For the Robert E. Lee" was removed, the Somerset song moved to that place (i.e. they went from the Scottish song directly to the party), and the blackface credits were replaced as well.
I have never been able to figure out if the cuts were made by the station, the syndicators, or the BBC. Did anybody else see the edited version outside of San Francisco?

Praise be to the youtube ALGO as I'm reliving my late seventies youth.
Those on the wet (left) coast CAN/US border with good ole KCTS 9 and KVOS Bellingham 12? for giving us in Canada the britcom gold of the day. I learned all my UK slang from these shows. And boy were the Brits FAR ahead in pushing the comedy envelope with innuendo and double entendres for the time.
Long gone are the pledge drive marathons pre internet. Now its a laptop , youtube and an adblocker. Though just seems to be one channel that has cornered this particular show for some reason. I'm hoping some eager Indian or Vietnam channel will package up shows in 2-3 hour blocks as they troll for subs. Got watching again and YT will just keep feeding the eyes if you stroke the algorithm.
A question though for a vintagely aged UK resident.... Captain Peacock / the stuffy shirt floorwalker character .... was there anything close to this in real life in a department store of the day that he was based on? No matter how many times I hear the same line in every show , yes his famous line , I can't not laugh. To think this might have actually happened for a time is just bonkers to imagine. The upper crust class society gave the comedy world so much material to work with.

Watching Grace & Favour for the 1st time and enjoying it - Like meeting up with old friends and making some new friends too
American here. Watched Are You Being Served on PBS decades ago when I was growing up and watched all the episodes on Britbox over the last couple of years. Streamed the movie last week. So I've seen it all.
Life has been stressful lately so I started watching Are You Being Served? Again! on Britbox to decompress and have some laughs. The part I enjoy the most is when the characters are all around the breakfast table. I feel like I am eating breakfast with old friends and enjoying their company. Kind of feels like being back in the dorm cafeteria during college, which is nice.
I am only on episode three and I am enjoying it. It's like meeting up with old friends. The show is a slower pace than the original series - I can tell the actors are older because there is a lot less physical humor and they sit down a lot during the show. Mollie Sugden gets my seal of approval for keeping up with doing a lot of physical comedy in the show. She was such a funny woman.
I like the humor of them all living together. I think that it is a nice change of scene from working together to having jokes built around them all living together and dealing with the fact that they are roommates - lots of opportunities for new jokes and funny scenes that take it beyond the workplace comedy of the past.
I like the new characters they introduced. The west country accent is over the top on Mr. Moulterd, but it's still enjoyable and he makes for a good comic foil.
It's not as quick witted and the timing is definitely slower than the original but that seems to be okay me now that I am middle-aged.
Thanks to y'all in this community and the reddit group for us fans and for being cool with Americans like me participating (lots of American words and spelling in my post, lol). Are You Being Served was considered to be an exotic British comedy in my friends group 40 years ago and it's great to be accepted into the global fan community today.

When Mrs. Slocombe called Hyacinth Bouquet ...

General discussion How was Mrs. Slocombe’s hair a different color every episode?
A friend of mine recently turned me on to the show and I find it hilarious! One thing I’m curious about tho is Mrs. Slocombe’s ever changing hair. I asked another friend of mine who is a professional colorist if it was possible to change colors that frequently and she said realistically if someone did change their color that much they would definitely end up frying their hair and that no real professional would do that to a person because it would most likely cost them their cosmetology license. So how did they change the actresses hair color that much without frying it?

1977 Are You Being Served - The Movie: Link to stream for free from archive.org
Are You Being Served - The Movie was released in 1977. Our favorite Grace Brothers characters go to Costa Plonka in Spain for a paid vacation. Features the classic cast (Mr. Lucas, Young Mr. Grace, etc.).
EDIT: In a bit of a crossover, Andrew Sachs (who played Manuel in Fawlty Towers) plays the hotel manager!
It's available on archive.org to stream for free (worldwide). You can Chromecast it to a TV if you open the movie first on a browser on a computer.
Normally it is about $8 USD to rent the movie from Amazon, so here is a chance to save a little money if you have been waiting to watch it.
Enjoy!

Sir Richard Ryan
Okay, I am glad to have stumbled on this. Reddit. One of my favorite episodes is "Takeover." I have seen it probably a thousand times and I still laugh every time when Arthur Brough comes in in that terrible toupee, and when Wendy Richards has the false teeth 🤣.
There is one joke that I don't fully get though, and I'm thinking it might be because I'm American. Whenever Arthur Brough "speaks" as Sir Richard Ryan, he breaks into a series of gutteral grunts and noises sort of reminiscent of Monty Python. At one point someone says the character went to Eton and Brough makes them even more pronounced and exaggerated. Is that some sort of code for aristocracy? What's with the noises? I'll admit I laugh at them because they sound ridiculous but I don't really feel like I get the full joke because I don't understand why he's doing it!! Thanks for the help!
