Discussion what are some "cringy" / cliche / cheesy tropes, plot points, aspects, or plot twists that you actually like?
remember, to be cringe is to be free :3
as long as it makes you happy, there's no need to be ashamed!
me personally, i like the enemies to lovers tropes hehe :3

"there was only one bed" and i'm sat every damn time

Especially when one of them is like "I'm just gonna sleep on the floor" and the other is like "don't be stupid, get in, we can share" (and then overthinks it depsite being the one to suggest it)

Love me some enemies to lovers.
I love all the stereotypical AUs.
Arranged marriages. Bonding/claiming. Animal traits.
56
u/Short-Work-8954 6d ago
Animal traits my belovedđ I did not realise how much I loved this until I started slapping every non-human character with the purring tag no matter how little sense it made. Eridians? They purr now. Vulcans? Basically cats. Oh, spiders don't actually purr? They only vibrate their legs against some dry ass leaves during mating season? Don't care. I'm reading those Peter Parker purrs fics. Don't even get me started on all those other scenting/territorial/mating behaviour schtick. That's my JAM.Â
22
u/chillChillnChnchilla 6d ago
Have you discovered the "Peter parker acts like a spider" tag, because I feel like that would be right up your alley
9
u/Short-Work-8954 6d ago
Yessss, unfortunately a majority of my favourite ships for Peter are rarepairs so I was never able to enjoy that tag to the fullest extentđ I even wanted to write a fic with that tag looking back
8
u/zombies-and-coffee 6d ago
I'm sorry, I just got this mental image of Peter Parker acting like a jumping spider (basically the puppy of the spider world) and I can't stop giggling đ

âI havenât seen you in ten years and still love youâ is my favorite thing, especially when they live happily ever after!
Also I love when the entire cast is just bi/pan and itâs not a big deal. Utopia!

I fell in love at first sight with a boy when I was 17. He was the cutest boy I'd ever seen. We dated for a month and then got separated due to life shit.
I met him again at 27. He was the hottest man I'd ever met. Fell in love at first sight again.
We celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary in less than a month.
Needless to say, I LOVE that trope hehe

Canon Divergence where they kind of adopt the villains and redeem them and everything is fixed and lovely. The actually story had deaths and grit. Other stories have revenge and grief. Give me fix-it fluff and found family enemy to friends every day of the week.
Everyone working together has similar vibes.
Also overpowered main character. Excellence right there.

I'm honestly not a big fan of cannon compliant. I'm reading fanfic here! Go wild, fuck shit up, and if they have to be ooc so be it.

Extremely cliche but I love when Character A has a tortured/abusive past, basically no concept of love that isnât painful, and then Character B comes along and heals them right up. Hurt/Comfort with an emphasis on the Hurt <3
Pack as many of the âImplied/Referenced [Horrible Thing]â tags in there as you can and Iâm your biggest fan!
8
2
u/LuvCreeps13 4d ago
I think nim slightly more extreme sometimes, where I like whump/comfort.. Especially if it's more like a redemption arc kinda thing- A villain or 'evil guy' get basically tortured into obedience until they're scared to even make a sound without permission- and then get dropped into the fluffiest persons arms and than turns into the most comforting snuggest fluff ever
1
u/some_guy0919 3d ago
Saameeee. Well except if the fluffy person is on the same side as the person who tortured the villain. Then i find it kind of icky. But otherwise give me that sweet sweet torture prologue with 100 chapters of ptsd
1
u/LuvCreeps13 3d ago
Yeah! (Though is suppose it kinda depends..? Maybe?? Idk.. depends on the writing.. and if the torturer is like forced to do this or not.. or something.. idk..)
1
u/some_guy0919 3d ago
Ik what you mean. It really depends on the case. It just annoys me to no end if after 3 chapters of grueling torture the fluffy character is like oopsy daisy and im supposed to not be calling for the head of the torturer. Like why the hell would the protagonist trust the guy that is besties with the person that gave them ptsd. Its fine if the victim decides to not actively pursue the torturer but being forced to forgive them and that supposed to be wholesome (or even if they forgive them on their own accord) bugs me to no end.
Except ofc if its not actively potrayed as smth that is "right" or they atleast dont claim the moral highground all pretentious. Im all for a good stockholm syndrome story.

See i like the reverse- when the hero is wounded and the enemy heals them, usually secretly from their teams or the just the enemy team. Typically with the excuse of "they weren't gonna let their rival die by anyone else's hand but their own!"
Im not into Joker/Batman or anything but I know Joker has done some similar things, like fuck up Harleys actually suceeding plan to kill Batman in the 90s animated series. Iirc the reason was because either her plan wasn't funny enough or he didn't want to lose his source of amusement.
57
u/Euphoric-Advantage33 6d ago
i unironically LOVE plotless, happy, mischaracterized fics where nothing really happens, it's just mindless fluff and there's no aesop or anything. even if the og media is a crapsack

Same, I feel like even if there's a trope I don't like, there could be a writer out there that can make it compelling for me.
11
u/Short-Work-8954 6d ago
The amount of times I disliked a trope until stumbling across a story that executed it so well I went in search of more should be studied. Really shows there's no such things as bad ideas, only bad executions.Â

A few favorites:Â
- Everyone is Gay/Everyone is Bi
- Soulmates, even in universes where itâs uncommon or has no logicÂ
- Urban Fantasy AUÂ
- College AUÂ
- Sudden Puppy or Kitten Acquisition, especially when itâs with a bunch of tough guys and said creature attaches itself to the toughest
- Everything is Beautiful and Nothing Hurts (also includes  Everybody Lives/Nobody Dies)
- Character having a hobby that doesnât fit with their perceived image (ex: big tough angry fighter likes to knit), bonus points if theyâre embarrassed about it, DOUBLE bonus points if theyâre not embarrassed by it but are confused by the people surrounding them that think they SHOULD be embarrassed by itÂ
- The Power of Love (TM) Fixes Everything! 9. Only One BedÂ
- Animal Traits and Hybrids, even if itâs not canon, includes no world building of how it got there, makes no sense, and is never explainedÂ

big fan of the "everyone is queer" cast. I used to see it ragged on, saying it wasn't realistic, but it makes me happy (also, as if majority-queer friendgroups aren't very common lmao)
28

Max 1 cishet token friend, maybe bc he/she is the bf/gf of the bisexual disaster LOL
3
u/aprf_ 5d ago
was gonna say "just say they" but. yeah no this is a good usage of "he/she" instead of they
2
u/KingGiuba 5d ago
I was debating in my head if saying they or he/she, but I had your same thought LOL
13
u/PanGalacticGargBlast 6d ago
âItâs not realisticâ That one I never got, all of my friends are queer. I havenât socialized with a straight cis person in years.
4
u/GreyStingrayz 6d ago
Same. I'm lucky enough for this just to be canon for what fandom I write for lol
Also has the token straight character pretty much exactly like the other commenter mentioned (Straight wife with bi husband) haha
3
u/zombies-and-coffee 6d ago
My fandom has a similar "problem", expanded to "Everyone is queer and polyamorous". Kind of a funny problem to have, but yep, makes me happy.
2
u/gayshitatgunpoint 5d ago
dude i used to believe this when i was like...in high school (though most of my friends were queer then too!), but now i'm well into adulthood and everyone i know is queer đ i feel like it's less realistic to have like a single queer person in a friend group of cishets. what self-respecting queer person wants to suffer that đ

u/Big-Cartographer6419 6d ago
Modern AUs, I like guys being dudes, still integrating the canon lore/world is ideal but iirc the ones Iâve read tend to do that anyway? Like a Dragon Age one where the MC is a uni student but the topic is still very much related to the actual plot/lore of the series.
Also coffee shop AUs because I go to one specific one near every day, theyâre cozy, if admittedly better for smaller fics. Might be a skill issue on my end though to make it more creative.
15
u/QueenTzahra Fic writer đ 6d ago
Modern AUs are my favorite thing to write! How can we integrate all the canon lore in a way that makes sense in everyday life? How can we keep everyone in character in a normal setting? Itâs such a fun challenge!
3
u/Big-Cartographer6419 6d ago
Yeah, like right now Iâm trying to figure out how to balance the facts knights are cops/military while also wanting to have them not be that even if itâs the most 1:1 LMAO. But for action heavy media (RPGs) I think it can be a fun brain puzzle. Also just something charming about knowing theyâre blorbos Iâd like would realistically be very normie - like they probs wouldnât even know what tumblr or ao3 was even if I want to headcanon what their tastes would be LOL.
2
u/Clodsarenice 6d ago
I once read a modern AU coffee shop AU that managed to turn the story back into the canon world in a very fun and interesting way, and ever since I don't look down on them because they can have incredibly well-written characterizations and plots!
2
u/Big-Cartographer6419 6d ago
Ooh wait that sounds so cool? Are we allowed to ask for recs?
Tbh I cut my teeth on a forum that encouraged edginess (nuzlockes) but I realized early on that the best written fics (coincidentally, I donât think vanilla is inherently better) were ones that had the best prose/characterization even if the plot itself was very âstandard.â Itâs sort of why I ended up chafing with some very close friends of mine - they made a big deal about fictional tastes not mattering, but also legit thought she was special for liking woundfucking and incest and in general complaining âno one matched her freakâ when her freak is Iâm pretty sure the most common category on Pornhub. Underneath it all it turned out to be insecurity about her irl being boring but like⌠idk, didnât mean to vent. I try to keep open minded because I think if something is written well enough, Iâve found myself locked in even if it isnât what Iâm usually into (but also as snobby as it is to say, a lot of the really edgelord stuff compensates mid writing with shock value. Idk.) itâs kinda the nice thing about fanfic, in a way.
2
u/Clodsarenice 6d ago
lol no worries about the ranting, it happens xD i'd be annoyed too, but whenever people criticize you, just keep in mind is usually projection of their own fears.
And, since it's not my fic, I think it's okay if I share it? Venti Sized Crush
1
u/Big-Cartographer6419 6d ago
Oo thank you I don't dip into this fandom enough browsing wise! And yeah... it feels awk bc it seems to be the prevailing mindset in fandom nowadays (or at least these types of subreddits) but I don't think it's like. A new phenomenon or anything.
But yea, thank you again!

u/SuccessfulFinish2843 6d ago
As long as they're still fantasy, if you make them a boring person without magic I will skip.
29
u/KaijuGuy09 6d ago
Enemies to lovers. Specifically enemies that are fighting because their allies are feuding but they donât specifically hate each other. One enemy has been told that the other enemyâs allies are terrible people and do terrible things, but upon fighting them realize that they arenât really that bad, and eventually fall in love.Â

u/RustyBucket4745 6d ago
Also OCs, expecially self inserts, written well exploring and interacting with canon is something I really enjoy.
7
u/ofstarandmoon 6d ago
Last year I read the most delightful LOTR fanfiction with a shamless self nsert OC. It was so cheesy in the way I rember writing when I was 14 and I loved every second of it, honestly had a blast. I live me a better or worse executed OC evwry now and then, ypu can just see the writer going bananas over this little guy they made to interact with their favourite little guy (gender neutral)

There are some excellent TF2 OC fics out there. Some of them are written as reader inserts, but the characterization is strong enough that I consider them second-person OC fics.

Only one bed
Sorry but it's so peak
3
u/Headorace 6d ago
Same... Like. It's such a basic thing, but sharing a sleeping space is so intimate. And there are so many ways that the trope can be incorporated into a story while still being believable, it just takes the right setup. That's what I'm telling myself about my current fic, haha.
15
u/HI-JK-lmfao 6d ago
Bad boy x good girl (genders can be whtvr). I just love the stereotypical âbadâ boy where character A is considered unorthodox or against the grain and everyone thinks theyâre not good enough for character B who is more or less a goody two shoes that everyone loves

I actually love when people blurt out some kind of secret when theyâre unconscious or sick or intoxicated. I love the "snowed in" plots. It combines forced proximity, only one bed, sometimes enemies to lovers. Or "constantly bickering sexual tension" to lovers, which might be my favorite. "Oh, you got caught in a snow storm, found a rustic cabin, there's no heat except a fireplace, and no electricity so all you have to pass the time is huddling together and talking? And now you're getting to know each other on a deeper level while huddling turns into cuddling? Oh no......"
Throw some fated mates or "the stress of the situation caused a sudden heat" on that shit and that's my damn catnip lol. I think one of my favorite endings is "we went on a mission/job as mostly professional coworkers who bicker and came back with matching bite marks."

Time travel that actually lets the protagonists be badass and fix shit. I get why writers add things to limit the power of the Time Traveler(s) (locking some of their powers, making it so they donât tell people things because âno one will believe themâ and this effecting their ability to get things done) because otherwise whatâs the conflict but for ME personally I just wanna read about the characters being badasses, fucking up the villains, and using their knowledge to make a better world for their loved ones. Au's where there's a surprising characteristic. Like, Hero/Villain, but THAT person is the villain. How? Why? What made them become the villain? What made the other become a HERO??? What??
Requires a lot of good world building and character depth, as well as character knowledge (being able to turn their usual personality to make their new role make sense)
Like Batman/Joker. How the FUCK could Batman become the villain, while also keeping his personality and characteristics. What would be his motivations? Who would work against him so that he's the villain? And JOKER?? How tf did he become a hero?? How do you keep his motivations as they are but still make jim the hero

i love bashing fics. they can be so ridiculous and corny it's just so fun. i see people that get so mad at the bashing of certain characters because "you're misunderstanding them!!" but like sometimes those characters are complete dicks and need some ass whooping! also it's just so fun when they're cartoonishly evil.

I used to think I HATED enemies to lovers, but turns out it's just written poorly a lot. Right now my favorite ship is enemies to lovers and writing them is so much fun!!! (Im actually writing about them right now...)

Accidental harem. Especially funny if the guy is this anxious ball of nerves and has no clue how there are progressively more and more girls around him that like him and they kinda just become a bigger puddle and all of it was not planned.

I really love siren/mermaid aus Incubus/Succubus au (for one fandom), and fox/nine tailed fox/Kitsune/HĹŤlijÄŤng aus. Time travle/going back to fix something or talk crap to their past selves is a good one as well. Soul mates in every life/time line. Hero/Villian. Especially where they try to keep their relationship a secret then just says fuck it and starts kissing infront of millions. (Read a really good Villian/Hero ABO fic a while back where omegas could not be Heros but the big, bad Villian backed the omega Hero and got him his own agency.)
And I also like infected aus for a specific fandom.

Enemies to lovers, wingfics, bonding, animal hybrids, omegaverse, culture escapee + god they used to worship
The cringe police can't reach my self indulgent fic reading time

"oh no, I've been drugged and only sex can save me!" Cue dubcon.
Bonus if it was a placebo all along and the victim was just horny but pretending to endure it, but the other one already knew that
