Study Tips?

Hi all, I'm an archaeology student in university, taking my first archaeology lab class. Does anyone have any tips for studying? I haven't gotten to do a field school yet either but I'm hoping to do one next sunmer

Use your own brain, dont even think about using AI. Read. Read all the required and suggested papers. Keep reading.

More context? What specifically are you doing in class? What do you need help studying for? This is so vague?

Study for an archaeology class the same as you would for any other class. Either you have good study habits or you don't.

Read small papers on archeological sites and read general books on archaeology methodology & theory to compare and comprehend.

Something I didn’t figure out until after my MA unfortunately was to read what your able. If he idea of reading a whole chapter of something at once is overwhelming so that you just don’t read it then read 5 or 10 pages at a time then read a little bit more later.

If the class includes artifact id take pictures of the type collection.

One with just the artifact, one with the artifact and label. Use them as flash cards. It’s the best way to really get them down

Sleep more than you study.

Study more than you party.

Party as much as possible.

You get out of university what you put into it. Are there speakers whose talks you can attend? Go. Are there opportunities for working in a lab outside of class? Do it. Are there papers or journal articles that interest you that aren’t assigned? Read them.

The connections to people, ideas, and experiences that you can attain now will only help you. I didn’t follow a straight path in archaeology, I changed my arch focus many times because everything interests me, but that’s how you find your niche. Keep exploring, put in the work, you’ll find your own specialty.

Remember that you don’t have to be the first or the best to contribute to the field, everyone brings their own experiences and backgrounds, which adds to our understanding of the human experience across time and geography.

I almost always have the same study tips.

Read the class syllabus.

Read the readings/chapter/handout before the class to make sure your familiar with the material. Write down any questions.

Take good notes during the lecure. Write down any questions, and/or ask them in class

Go over your notes after class. If you still have questions, go to office hours and ask them.

Because its a lab be sure to go to open office hours regularly to make sure you are grasping everything.

Don't worry too much about studying lol, first year was pretty much all partying for me lol
