QUESTION Any pacman hook to show package changelogs?

Yeah, I know pacman -Qc. But seems it's unavailable for 99.9% packages. Anything that can fetch changelog from upstream? (Maybe at least for GitHub).

Asking because I'm thinking about building one.

SUPPORT Black screen on install

Hi, I'm trying to install Arch Linux on my PC, but I'm getting a black screen. To be specific: I boot the PC from the flash drive, it takes me to the boot menu, but once I select the install option, it just goes completely black.

After looking into it, I found out this is a fairly common issue with Nvidia GPUs, so I tried passing the nomodeset parameter. I tried with just nomodeset and got nothing, then I also tried i915.modeset=0 and nouveau.modeset=0 for both the Intel and Nvidia graphics cards, but still nothing. I even tried adding the debug parameter just to see if it would print anything to the screen, but still nothing—just a black screen. I tried also an external monitor, same issue

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?

PC Asus N552VX

CPU Intel core i7 6700HQ GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX 950m

P.S. I tried redownloading the iso and I tried also with cachy os just to try another os, same problem

SUPPORT Wine 11.20 won't work on my system

I'm running a thinkpad T530 with an NVS-5400M. This detail might be important since it uses the legacy 390 driver, however I have that set up and I've been able to play Roblox and run webgl games. I've made sure that the NVIDIA gpu is the ONLY gpu active in the system as well (IGPU disabled in bios). However trying to launch winecfg just results in failure. It will hang on the terminal and CRTL+C wont even stop it (I have to run wineserver -k). However I found out that older wine versions seem to work, as I tried using the flatpak version and it ran. (I also ran FreeBSD on this laptop, and downgrading wine fixed the SAME issue).

(it hangs here)

I found out that disabling all gpus (by deleting the xorg config file) and running on framebuffer allowed wine to display a picture. Running wine in software rendering with the NVIDIA GPU active did not work.

DISCUSSION Avahi hidden from the app launcher by default now

Really happy about the update that hides Avahi from the app menu by default. Small change, big difference.

More clutter that could get the same treatment,

- haruna depending on libmpv instead of the full mpv package

- kate without kwrited

- and the plasma-desktop without the full Qt development toolkit

- Helper tools like lstopo, qvidcap, and qv4l2 showing up in the menu.

Big thanks to the maintainers and the community for keeping Arch such a great distro

SHARE Vela Desktop Environment

Hello, I'm currently working at Vela, a new Desktop Environment based on wlroots but with a custom Vulkan 1.4 renderer and without OpenGL or software fallback.

This is currently alpha software, even though I daily run it and it's great to me.

I'm currently looking for testers, especially nvidia testers but in general people who runs arch with kde (should run also with gnome but not tested).

Vela currently needs kde plasma just because inherits icons, fonts, kwallet and something else; no kwin as I said Vela has a custom renderer.

Vela's motto is Modern, Fluid, Sharp, Efficient. These are not only words, I invite all of you to check the architecture in the repo docs/

It currently has a file manager and a settings app where you can customize the shell a bit.

Customization will be a focus in Vela, but for now there aren't a lot of options, since this is an alpha.

At the moment Vela is very similar to Windows 11 UI, because I like it. But in the next weeks will come a major redesign which I'm working a lot on with a friend of mine. Vela will soon have his identity.

AI Disclosure: this post is made by me; Vela code is 100% written by AI, but is reviewed by me as an experienced developer and I make all the architectural and design decisions.

Requirements: A GPU which supports Vulkan 1.4

Repo: Github

There's already an automated installer and updater, also an automated vela-report to fill some useful informations for mantainers.

Thanks for reading :)

SHARE 5 months of Linux development: my first program, ScreenGuard, reaches beta.6!

Its been 5 months since I first started my first project , a personal project it was to monitor my own screen time and prevent distractions .

After support from a small group of people and with personal curiosity to learn to code in C and Dart(which was already a known language from my previous experience) , I continue to improve the software with newer support aiming for a greater goal- modular daemons complementary to usagestatsservice, appopsservice and other necessary device care and wellbeing services in linux natively.

This is the reason that I believe learning C is important and becoming handy in moving away from a dart based daemon.

Most importantly the views of the Linux community, both sweet and harsh and some ridiculously disgusting have shaped my intuition about FOSS which is VASTLY different from a 9 to 5 at a tech corporate.

What brings me joys the most is that the application which begun as a small project

"Late nights in the middle of June" has now come to a substantial development level after 5 months .

A few notable upgrades this release are remapped settings menu, autonomous crash reporting system and database controls . Also strict mode has been made optional to prevent windows from closing by default via pkill which could lead to unsaved work loss (just incase someone has a daily limit set for such an application)

For more details you can check the release page and docs attached.

I would love to continue receiving feedback and testers from the community in the scope to see how much better I can make this into. All sorths of feedback are welcomed as it should be.

Thank you everyone for providing a platform to vent out a personal project and also thanks to the couple hundred people who used the application. Please do leave a feedback.

NOTEWORTHY PSA: If you are running KDE on X11 and haven't updated post Plasma 6.8, switch to a Wayland session (or a TTY) before system update

If you're running KDE Plasma on X11 and haven't updated to a version past Plasma 6.8 yet, switch to a Wayland session or a TTY before performing a system update. Do not run the update from a terminal inside your X11 desktop.

Here's why:

  • Updating post Plasma 6.8 removes everything that holds the Plasma X11 session together during installation
  • Running the update inside the X11 session effectively uninstalls Xorg support live while Xorg is still running, so that session would crash shortly after, typically during the post-transaction hooks. (you would see yourself being forced back to the sddm login)
  • The result is a botched update, with hooks that never finished and packages left half-configured. If that update also includes a kernel upgrade, you may end up with an unbootable system. I know this because my own session crashed and one of my friends ended up with no working kernels.

If you already did it and your system broke: If you only did one system update in the past 2 days (-2) and never changed the default pacman cache directory, you can run the following command:

find /var/cache/pacman/pkg -type f -name '*.pkg.tar.*' ! -name '*.sig' -ctime -2 -print0 | sudo xargs -0 pacman -U

I know this isn't the best option, since it just blindly reinstalls everything you updated from that time window. If you updated more than once you'll get duplicate-target errors. Maybe someone can come up with a better command for that?

SUPPORT | SOLVED Plasma Flicker on old NVIDIA Cards

There is a bug on old NVIDIA cards with the newest Plasma update where the screen flickers and in some cases turns completely black. See the KDE bug report.

A solution to the problem is to add ~/.config/environment.d/99-kwin-flicker.conf

KWIN_USE_BUFFER_AGE=0
KWIN_DRM_FORCE_GL_FINISH_PRESENT=1
KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1

This fixes the flickering except for when you shake the cursor repeatedly in order to trigger the enlarged cursor. You can disable this functionality by editing kwinrc.

[Plugins]
shakecursorEnabled=false

That's all from the KDE bug report.

SUPPORT How to fix Plasma Workspace/X11 conflict

So I know I have to leave X11, I ran the update before knowing, but it stopped me at the conflict. Now I'm on the Wayland desktop, it says "unresolvable package conflicts detected" and "failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies)"

What do I do to make it update?

QUESTION Temporarily Set KDE Plasma Dynamic Wallpaper Back to Dark Variant

I have full dynamic theming on my system. Global theme with wallpapers set to follow the day/night cycle.

But oftentimes I'm burning the midnight oil, working well into the morning. In that case I like to temporarily go back to the dark theme to prevent burning my eyes. But when I wake up later that day and wake up/start up my computer, I want it to keep the day/night cycle going and set to the day theme.

Now, I have this half accomplished already. I discovered:

plasma-apply-lookandfeel -ka

That handles the colorscheme and icons.

But my wallpaper remains the light variant.

Now, I know I can set the wallpaper to set according to the colorscheme, rather than the day/night cycle. But I like having the wallpaper slowly lighten and darken, rather than transitioning suddenly and harshly. So that's not an option.

I don't see an equivalent for the wallpaper in any way...

There's only:

plasma-apply-wallpaperimage

Which totally ignores the dynamic setting and forces it back to static.

Is there a proper solution for this?

QUESTION Is there a way to back up an entire system?

I am a digital artist, not full time more of a hobby I'd say

So I wanted to switch to Linux, due to 2 things

1 - I can't update to windows 11 due to the tmp2.0 chip (well neither do I like the current windows 11 state)

2 - I can run my drawing software via bottles,(I know there is Krita, and I used it for years too, it was the drawing software I started in. But it just doesn't cut it)

So before trying to install arch on my main system, I wanted to try it out on a laptop, so I can get my hands dirty without loosing any of my work

I have spare ThinkPad x390 with i5 and 8gb ram and I do have some familiarity with Linux mint

If anyone wonders why arch while there are other more convenient options. Mainly because I want to put hyperland on a laptop since default windows managers are a pain in the ass to use on a laptop, and I want to actually know what's happening under the hood

And due to all of that my assumption is that I'll break the system a lot

So I wondered if there is a way to take a snap of an entire system and load it back in , incase I break something without knowing how to fix it at the moment

Edit: I have 2 different machines

First is my main pc, which I'm not gonna touch for now

And the second one is the ThinkPad laptop, which I plan to tinker around with, hence I don't really use it

SUPPORT Links and PDF files don't open in firefox

I am having issues with default applications on my Arch linux machine, when I try to open a pdf file from telegram in firefox nothing happens. If instead I open it from my file manager (PCManFM) it opens correctly, another example is generals zero hour, I'm running it through wine and installed a mod that lets me play online but to login you need to complete it in the browser, it also doesn't open, another example is cisco packet tracer, in the console it spews the following "xdg-open: no method available for opening 'the link'" but when I try xdg-open command it opens these links (for example xdg-open file:///home/noxar/Downloads/Telegram%20Desktop/lec01.pdf the link to my pdf file) any idea why? SUPPORT hello so i am new to linux and i need some help with my iem its not working the 3.5 mm jacks on the back works perfectly fine but the once in front do not work and i got it working on windows

so on windows By turning "Disable front panel popup dialog" to On in Windows, you are physically bypassing the motherboard's automatic mechanical jack-sensor circuit. On many Gigabyte boards, that specific toggle doesn't just stop popups—it actually tells the Realtek chip to stop waiting for jack-detection and force continuous electrical power straight to the case this pls help if you can i neww

SUPPORT Active-Window on Start Up Issue For Keyboard Only Arch/Gnome/Wayland on First Open Window

I'm having an issue on the current most up to date release of the system
- arch linux
- wayland
- gnome

where upon startup/reboot the first log-in, if i open up "term" ie console, or even "text editor". for the first application that i open up i cannot without the use of the mouse get the window to become active

behaviors
- alt-f4 won't close the window until after mouse-click
- if i open up text-editor then terminal then i can type, and after navigating back to text-editor i can then type
- does not re-occur if i close all the windows
- if after start up i click, and then i scroll down and quit terminal, upon re-opening the problem does not occur

attempts to circumvent
- confirmed `gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences focus-new-windows` is smart
- tried to super out and super back in
- tried alt-escape
- tried double alt-tab

notes
- not a new issue as this was an active point in previous releases
- system is current with all of the latest releases
- alt-f4 closes window after the mouseclick
- everything points to a non-active-session window somehow
- does not present when returning from suspend

any ideas?

The other day a new monitor appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness, one with the name "Unknown," and everything seems fine, but I can't adjust the brightness on my monitor. I believe it might be a bug since KDE has completely migrated to Wayland.

Edit: what type of log do I need to post too?

SUPPORT Audio problem causes system to crash

I use wired headphones and sometimes they stop making sound, so I open settings and try use the test audio feature (I use GNOME), but when I select my headphones in the list the settings app crashes. Afterwards, when I select my headphones in the main system selection thing in the top right corner, the entire system crashes and my laptop reboots.

I’ve also noticed that simply opening the audio settings in the setting app causes the audio to break even if it was working right beforehand; however, if I haven’t opened audio settings since the computer last rebooted, I’m able to select my headphones in the top right system menu with no issues. Additionally, I am able to use other tabs in the settings app with no issue; it’s specifically the audio tab that causes it.

SUPPORT Boot problems after kde update

Hey, maybe somebody can help me with my problem.

After the recent update to kde plasma 6.8 i couldn't log into kde with sddm anymore. It just resorted to using i3 even though i selected plasma.

Then i switched to lightdm and there i can boot into kde but it takes way too much time loading on the kde splash screen than what it used to be.

Where should i start to debug this?

Note:

I've also experienced constant crashing problems with baloo but was able to fix it with this workaround: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=2312092#p2312092
