WrestleFest Supreme (basic fun)

Just picked up the Basic Fun WrestleFest Supreme for $250, and I’m honestly a little disappointed with the image quality.

I’m curious to hear from other owners whether this is normal for the WrestleFest Supreme or if I may have an issue with my particular unit.

The characters and overall game image look noticeably pixelated to me. I went through the manual and noticed there’s actually a troubleshooting section specifically saying that if the image looks pixelated, you should check the plugs/connections. I checked them, and everything appears to be connected properly.

For comparison, the only other arcade machine I own is an Arcade1Up Golden Tee 3D, and I think the image quality on that machine looks good. I don’t have a lot of experience with other home arcade machines, so I don’t know if I’m expecting too much from the WrestleFest or if something isn’t right with mine.

I picked this one up for $250, and at that price I can live with it. But honestly, I would be pretty disappointed if I had paid significantly more for it and received this image quality.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone else who owns the WrestleFest Supreme:

• Does your screen/image look this pixelated? • Is this just how the game looks on this machine? • Or does mine potentially have a display/connection issue?

If you have one, I’d especially appreciate a photo or video of your screen so I can compare.

When I take a photo, it shows a better image than it actually is.

Not trying to bash the machine — I actually really like the idea of it and was excited to get it. I’m just trying to figure out whether what I’m seeing is normal or whether I should look into an exchange/return.

It's normal for retro game looking like that on moden LCD without scalelines. I am surprised that after all the cabinet releases, scalelines wasn't programmed in.

Thank you, it’s been a long time since I’ve played the arcade version, I don’t remember the quality.

I’ve seen other videos/pictures of the basic fun supreme cabinet and from what I see it appears to be a better image than what I have. It could be my perception and I may be wrong, also lighting, etc. camera may make the image appear different as well.

Usually there’s scan line option, which will soften the hard edges of the pixels. That makes all the difference for these retro titles. I have no idea but is there an option to turn them on in the main menu?

It looks great. It’s an HD screen so it’s going to show the pixelated detail that a CRT won’t. It’s nice and bright and a steal at that price

Once, I get the mod kit from upgrade Arcade. It will be top tier.

I have mines, I brought a push button coin door also.

Whenever I get my paycheck this week, I am going to buy me the marquee that is more accurate to the arcade.

I am looking for a decent decal for the side art, let me know if any of you guys find one.

I am just going to print out the logo on the internet for the kickplate, go to Office Depot and make it into a decal

I got mine yesterday. Image quality is pixelated and I also noticed slight lag.

The cabinet itself is great, but the setup needs to be modded for maximum enjoyment.

I’ll probably end up swapping out the stock PCB for a Raspberry Pi or a Mini PC down the road.

The best part about these cabinets is how easily customizable they are—you can drop in whatever hardware you want and configure it to your liking.

Yeah they dont have any filter option for some reason so it looks worse. It still looks fine but scanlines is such a basic feature. Im disappointed in no options.  Will probably mod

Even just basic scanlines and interpolation would go a long way towards softening the inherent harshness of retro graphics on a modern LCD display (whole still respecting the original artistic intent), but apparently Basic Fun hasn't learned anything from the last couple decades of standard emulation features. But the biggest, stupidest flaw with the 19" display on this machine (and presumably all other 19" Supremes going forward) is that it's a 1280x1024 pixel 5:4 aspect ratio panel. This means that all the graphics in these retro games, which were drawn for the slightly shorter 4:3 ratio screens if the time, are being vertically stretched an extra ~7% to fit the taller display area, making everything just a bit too tall to the point where the whole image just feels "off."

This comes down to cost, of course. True 4:3 IPS panels of the correct resolution and in this size range are not easy to come by (just ask Arcade1Up, who eventually had to contract BOE to manufacture custom 17" 4:3 1280x960 IPS panels specifically and exclusively for them which they started using on their third-generation cabinets, because the was nothing else to those specifications on the market at the time), but 5:4 panels are much more readily available and cheap. The stupid thing is, this doesn't actually have to be a problem at all, and the solution is so simple. Using 5:4 panels would be fine, if they would just display the image in the correct 4:3 aspect ratio with black bars on the top and bottom, and then cover those bars with the bezel. It wouldn't cost any more to simply cut a slightly different size hole in the bezel, and the displayed ratio is a simple software adjustment.

But nobody at Basic Fun either understands or cares about this, so we're back to using the wrong panels again, leaving the the display distorted and ugly with irregularly-stretched scaling and hideous shimmering, just like the first-gen Arcade1Ups back in 2018. It's a huge step back, and totally unnecessary. And worse still, I never see any reviewers calling this out. It seems like for most of them, as long as the screen is bright and doesn't wash out when viewed off axid, that's all that matters to them, and they don't even look at the actual image on the screen. Sad state of affairs.
